Hi everyone,

I am looking for some input from all the more advanced A/V people out there.

I own a Toshiba 65 inch CRT RPTV. I am very pleased with the image as far as movies goes but I find the image in gaming (xbox 360) to be soft and not as sharp as when I played on a Toshiba Regza TV.

I would like input from you guys if you think going from my CRT TV to a projector would increase the sharpness in the graphics of games? I am looking to project around 80 inch and was more interested in a DLP projector. I will probably go for a 720P projector if I buy one.

thank you very much

Whats the native resolution of your CRT RPTV?

I suspect the Regza is small then your 65" CRT PRTV. A smaller screen almost always look sharper providing they have the same resolution.
A single chip DLP projector will be very sharp at around 80" but whether is it sharp enough is subjective. Best thing you can do is to get a demo from local dealer.
If you are going to go through the trouble of setting up from projection then you should go at least 100" if your environment allows.

Hi,

thanks for the replies. The native resolution is 1080i for my RPTV. I decided to take a chance and buy a Optoma 720p projector with a 92 inch screen included. (I don't think my eyes could take 100 inch at the distance I am sitting). I don't think I have a right to name that store on the forums but all I can say is that it is a great deal.

I will take a chance and if I don't like it, I will bring it back. From what I saw, I think I should be pleased though.

I still have my Pioneer Elite Pro-520 that has been professionally calibrated. It sits below an Elite Cinewhite 120" screen for my Epson HC720. I have high ceilings so I was able to go with a fixed frame screen above the CRT. This way I get the best of both worlds.

The biggest difference I see between the projector and the RP CRT is contrast. The Pioneer is about as good as it gets in terms of contrast and color accuracy. The blacks are incredible. The projector does a decent job but it doesn't come close.

If you feel your current crt isn't that sharp it might be time for a full cleaning and focusing of the guns. There is a great thread about not dumping your RP CRT in the rear projection forum that you should check out. Most of the time the guns are a bit out of focus straight from the factory. I don't know anything about your model but I wouldn't be suprised if yours are. Also, they get dirty over time. I recommend removing the screen and cleaning the mirror and the top lense of the guns at least once a year. You should also completely remove the lenses to clean the CRT faces and the other lenses every few years. Once it is nice and clean you can then adjust the manual focus of each lense. There is also an electronic focus pot but you shouldn't adjust that until the manual focus is spot on.

This isn't difficult to do but if your not sure how then you should hire someone. The difference will amaze you.

I still haven't seen anything that can touch the overall picture quality of the Pioneer RP CRT. If only they would have made a 120" model!:p

Make sure you consider your mounting options before purchase. Optoma DLP with exception of a couple of models do not have vertical lenshift, so you'll have to either do a table or ceiling mount.
You'd be surprised how quick you'd get used to a 92" screen and want yet a bigger screen. When I bought my first projector I was thinking the same thing but now I am thinking about going to 110" (maximum I can do in the room).
