I have a my LCD mounted on a wall in my bedroom, on the other side of that same wall is a large closet. If I am to place the components (which include receiver, 360, PS3 and HD DVR) in the closet can I run the power chord through the wall without being in violation. The wall is very thin paneling, there is insulation on the closet side but I can pull some of it out because there is no wall on the closet side.

I don't know the specific building codes, but I don't think this would be an issue. I assume you would run pop a hole in the wall and run an extension cord or power strip through it. Since this really isn't permanent wiring, you should be fine.

Well, it is against code, but I wouldn't see any issues with it as far as starting a fire.

Where is the outlet on the bedroom side of the wall? If it is on the same wall that shares the closet wall, (ie, the back of the outlet is accessible from the closet) you could very easily add an outlet in the closet. Remove the insulation from the stud cavity that the existing outlet is in and add another outlet facing the closet on the opposite stud in the same cavity. A short piece of romex would connect the new outlet to the existing outlet.

Is the closet vented? Heat may become an issue with all that equipment in there.

I wouldn't do it !! Do you have access above (attic) or below (basement) ?

This is definitely against code. Power cables and extension cords were never designed to go through walls, they'll deteriorate and be a massive fire hazard.

There are a couple of solutions have been presented on this forum. The DIY version is here:

But if you want a "consumer" version then check this out:

As others have answered.....no it is in violation of code.

Will it burn your house down? I very highly doubt it.....

Exactly. It is no more a fire hazard than a power cord in a cabinet. It won't void your homeowners insurance either as some believe. Is it the most professional install, NO.
