I'm talking to the recent purchasers. I imagine they don't stay in the store that long. I'm curious as I might get an 80GB should WM do the GC deal. I imagine they'll have the same firmware. It's just that I don't have a router yet so I need to know if I should accelerate my purchase. I'll be playing MGS4 and am not a big online player anyways.

Not sure why it matters... you can download the latest firmware to your PC from playstation.com (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/SystemUpdate/pc_update.html#update_PC) and install the update using a removable storage device.

You dont even need go that far. If your PS3 isnt connected and not updated. The new games you purchase come with the version of firmware you need in order to play that game. So technically you never have to hook the PS3 up to the internet, or download firmware (via USB) in order to play games, as the games have the firmware you need on the disc. You only need internet access to have the latestet/greatest firmware, and to play online.

I had to update mine before playing, in fact it told me I could not play the game until I updated and the game did not come with any firmware. But I do think that is a wise feature on some games as people are sometimes technology inept.

I hope MGS4 has the latest. I imagine not playing that one for a while after inserting the disc.

Well I got a 40Gb over the weekend and it came with 2.0. I rented Bourne Conspiracy and it had 2.2 so I killed 2 birds with one stone.

Well it figures.. LOL :D There is always an exception to the rule. But I thought Sony had made this a requirement just like they do with PSP games. Apparently not so much on the PS3.
