Does anyone know the release date for the new 80gig PS3? Who will likely be getting it first? Exactly what is different about it?

I believe you meant the Metal Gear Solid4 bundle? The PS3 itself will be in gun metal gray, comes with the game and a dualshock 3 controler. Internal working of the console is the same as the regular 80Gbs.

The 80GB model bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4 is the regular glossy black finish. The gunmetal gray version is a special limited edition version you'll never see at retail and is, if I remember correctly, a 40GB model.

One thing to note that unless this is a case of the website being out of date, the 80GB will be the more power hungry version of the cell (i.e. 90nm). According the manual up on the Sony site it uses 380W!!! I definitely hope that is wrong but if not, that may change my plans a bit personally.

So far I cannot find anything suggesting that the upcoming bundle includes a different model.

Here's hoping these actually use the 65nm process and have a suitably reduced power footprint.

Dude dont get me wrong. I **WANT** the bundle. I purposely didnt buy the 40gig w/ free $100 giftcard from Walmart or BestBuy this week just because I'm waitin to get the same $100 giftcard deal from Walmart (or whoever will pricematch) IF the bundle is indeed released on June 12th.

Im skeptical because it seems alot of game retailers are being shady about either:

A) pre-orders for the MGS 80gig bundle or

B) posting an actual release date


Now I will admit before alot of websites were saying the release date would be something like June 2008.

Atleast now theres two confirmed websites (Amazon and CC) saying June 12th. So I'm starting to have a little more faith it will come out on 6/12.

For what it is worth, a local EB told me a few days ago that they would for sure be getting them in for June 12th but only limited quantities whatever that means. A couple of days earlier at a different EB I was told me that they had no idea (shrug). Futureshop however also says June 12 (online that is). The SonyStyle.ca site however shows the prospective date as being much later - July 24th.

Game stores are being shady, because they know they'll more than likely sell out. If they do pre-orders, there is a strong chance they won't be able to honor them all or there will have no units for those who didn't pre-order until the next shipment.

Also it would make no sense, marketing-wise, to introduce the bundle any time after MSG4 is released.

I have to disagree with this point. Bundling any major title for free (especially exclusive titles) after your initial release date is a great way to lure in casual buyers sitting on the fence fishing for a deal. I say this because the hardcore fans and true enthusiasts of the MGS series will buy a PS3 & MGS4 regardless of the bundle. In that case you are gaining $60 in revenue by sellin the game and the new PS3 seperately.


Casual buyers (like myself) need a little more enticing bait. So for those of us sitting in the 'maybe' section.. bundling a popular exclusive MAJOR title anytime after its initial release is a great way to keep the sales coming in. (After you've hit the hardcore fans for their $60 bucks)

That is just insane. Good thing I got my order in. I can't imagine anyone trying to pick this up Thursday morning next week. I'm guessing there will be lines before opening.

Actualy less than that, more like two minutes. I got my order in, checked to see that it was confirmed then went back to the main page (less than 1 minute total) and the option to buy was no longer available.

Nah it's because of preorders for Gigli on Blu-Ray. Oh and another film that I can't quiet remember the title to, though I know it starts with an "I".
BTW thank goodness today was my day off. Lucky enough to get one.

It's the tickle me elmo/cabbage patch doll effect Nintendo picked up on. Produce a limited quantity far below sales expectations creating artificial supply problems there by getting a lot of attention and the "it's so cool you can't get it in stores" factor. This leads to high demand for a product from people that otherwise wouldn't have given it a second thought if they saw it sitting on the store self with all the other worthless merchandise. It seems to work great but Sony has had month to remake more 80gb units and should have no problems sending out more than just "limited" quantities. Now poor Amazon is down. The Ebayers must have had a fit.

Can't speak for anyone else but personally Wal-Mart could be offering PS3s for $50 an I wouldn't buy one from them. All large corporations tend towards being evil but Wal-Mart is particularly cannibalistic / destructive of local economies.

The nearest walmart to me is about a 30 min drive one way. Add in the gas, tax, and waiting in line and other hassles the $100 certificate is less appealing (even if I didn't have the gift certificates).

I really hate being around tons of people after the same thing as me. Like Xma$, absolutely hate dealing with all the high strung folks trying to get the best: deal, parking spot, place in line, etc. Not my thing.
I'm supposedly now guaranteed to get one. Maybe a few days later but that's ok. I've survived with my SNES and PC for years. I can survive a few more weeks.
No guarantee I'll be one of the few to get on the walmart deal.

I hear you all. I hate walmart as much as the next guy .Around here in the midwest things are rather low key though. I walked in yesterday and got a 40 gig they had nine instock. Seems like all the major cities are sold out of even 40 gig's due to the $100 gift card. Sometimes its nice to not live ina hugh city. FYI your odds are a lot better at a walmart in the not so nice part of town. All are nice walmarts here were sold out. I went to the one in the hood and they have 9 sitting there, lol.

I had $130 in credits built up over time, with that and the no tax (mentioned by others) it turned out to be a better deal for me. Heck, I even got one-day shipping...still have to wait a day or two, but that's fine.

I posted in another thread that the two 24-hr Walmart I visited today after work (in the Huntsville, AL area), both store managers said the $100 giftcard is NOT supposed to be used with the 80gb bundle. Maybe it'll be different depending on which store you're near.

The Best Buy here couldn't give me a exact number, but said expect somewhere "between 20 and 50". The CC next to them said "can't tell you exactly, but we're expected more than 15". Gee thanks :rolleyes: Of the two Walmarts I visited, one will have 4 to sell at midnight, the other "10-20". FWIW

I agree with some previous posters though. Lamestop, BB and CCs near me mentioned the 80gb will be a "new sku". Whether or not that includes the MGS4 bundle remains to be seen. However, I also expect this first "shipment" to not be the last. Sony knows what they have here (kickass game + 80gb system + DS3). They also know people like me, who've held out buying a PS3 so far, will regard this as a solid deal. If Sony's marketing dept has any brains, they will provide enough bundles on/off for at least 60-90 days.
