Hello everyone:

I recently purchased a Toshiba D-R410 and I'm really starting to thing it was one of the worst purchases I've ever made.

First, I use BRAND NEW DVD-RW and record about 4 hours worth of shows, then go to finalize it and it gives an error saying it cannot record on the disc.

Next, I try another DVD-RW and it works fine.

Today, I record one hour worth of shows and go to record another and it gives me that same damn error that it cannot record on the disc.

Is there a fix to this or what? I'm using SONY brand dvds. It's just really frusturating to have 4 hours worth of work for nothing.

I'm about ready to just return this to Best Buy and give up recording my shows on DVDs. Is there another burner I should go for? I want to be able to do the following:

-record tv shows from my DISH network DVR
-transfer VHS to dvd (don't need a vcr/dvd combo as i have a vhs)
-make chapter menus if at all possible
-make titles for each show on dvd

Click on my signature for a 160GB HDD unit with digital tuners and lots more. Great for VHS transfers, recording shows and making high-speed dubs. Doesn't make Chapter menus tho.

You won't need the tuners with Dish TODAY, but maybe plans will change in the future... who knows, then you might be glad you've got all the necessary tuners. Might decide to hook up a rabbit ears and get the best of OTA AND Dish even now.

Loads of support in that link... you'll never get lost! :)

Don't give up yet. If you could get by with DVD-R rather than -RW, you should have much better luck. RW media is unreliable even in the best DVDR.

i've been using nothing but -r discs in my 2 toshiba dr2s and pan es 15 for saving my shows. never had a single issue in 3 1/2 years other than a very rare disc that wouldnt load.
after ~1500 recordings i did have to get the drive unit replaced in my first dr2 2 years ago.
never tried a -rw disc and dont plan to.

You should use DVD-R's - more reliable, cheaper, and more compatible with other players. Also, some units tend to be choosy about speed and brand of DVD-RW media.

With DVD Recorders, in general, there are more media issues than there should be. Comes with the territory, unfortunately.

yes, -rs are quite cheap.
side note- im a lot more particular about what i record nowadays. when i first got dvdr i recorded everything i could just cuz i could. ended up with a lot of schlock/waste that i would never watch. and gave away/disposed of.
