View Full Version : Best Audio Settings for Me (UP5000) d2thez 06-05-08, 01:44 PM I have the Samsung BD-UP5000 hooked via HDMI to a 2-channel TV. I simply want to know what is the best config within the player's menu (using firmware 1.3) for audio? bradavon 06-05-08, 07:01 PM PCM Stereo. Not that I think it matters as all of them will come out as PCM Stereo when sent into a Stereo only Amp (as in your TV), but you may as well choose PCM Stereo so there's less work for the Player to do. This is with any Samsung firmware too. Ph8te 06-05-08, 08:51 PM PCM Stereo. No such thing as PCM stereo setting on the player....He has a choice between 3 options Bitstream Audiophille, Bitstream Re-encode, and PCM......No need to really set anything if he is just going to his TV as all he will be getting is 2.0 regardless of which track he picks..... So the real answer should be pick one that sounds best to you. When if you upgrade to gettng surround sound your options then change :)..... bradavon 06-05-08, 10:17 PM No such thing as PCM stereo setting on the player....He has a choice between 3 options Bitstream Audiophille, Bitstream Re-encode, and PCM...... Thanks. PCM is the one to go for then. Even though all with give you 2 Channel it's how it's sent that is important. * PCM - Raw PCM feed - The TV will be happiest with this option, it knows what PCM is. * Bitstream Audiophille - A Digital Bitstream signal, completely useless to the TV. * Bitstream Re-encode - A Digital Bitstream DTS signal, completely useless to the TV. PCM is the optimal setting. Even if the Samsung can ultimately cope with any setting, it's still extra work for no gain. Especially Bitstream Re-encode, that has to send audio through a DTS Transoder, for no good reason when outputted to a TV. The LG BH200 has: PCM Stereo PCM Multi-Ch Primary Pass Thru - Clearly exactly the same as Bitstream Audiophille DTS Re-Encode - Clearly exactly the same as Bitstream Re-encode I guess LG decided to split PCM into two categories. So the real answer should be pick one that sounds best to you. I'd agree with that, although the very limited capabilities of TV speakers/Amps usually means it's hard to tell any difference. I used to have my player set to Bitstream Audiophile and now have it set to PCM, as far as the TV goes there is no audible difference in the sound coming out...The only real difference is that you would here secondary sounds with the Audiophile setting. While PCM would be the recommended to allow the player to do the decoding, the OP should notice any difference between settings, since all he is going to get is 2.0 sound. Since the TV is VERY limited in what sound it can produce, almost any setting that the 5K will produce the same results for him. PCM would be "more work" for the 5K in the end though as it forces the player to decode the audio internally rather than just passing the audio "as is" via Audiophile. With re-encode the player again does "the work" and re-encodes the audio to DTS...... bradavon 06-06-08, 10:20 AM The only real difference is that you would here secondary sounds with the Audiophile setting. I thought it was the other way around: PCM - Onboard decoded and secondary audio retained Bitstream - Sent in Bitstream and no secondary audio retained No? allargon 06-06-08, 10:23 AM The LG BH200 has: PCM Stereo PCM Multi-Ch Primary Pass Thru - Clearly exactly the same as Bitstream Audiophille DTS Re-Encode - Clearly exactly the same as Bitstream Re-encode I guess LG decided to split PCM into two categories. I'd agree with that, although the very limited capabilities of TV speakers/Amps usually means it's hard to tell any difference. My TV has that fake psuedo surround sound so I leave it in multichannel PCM even though I know it makes no difference. (Leave me alone. I have a big ole great room. It will be EXPENSIVE and awhile before I update the sound for high def.) bradavon 06-06-08, 11:24 AM I'd set it to PCM Stereo myself as the Psuedo surround sound works on a Stereo source. I use my TV speakers every day after 10pm, which means some movies too. I try to only watch films with mostly talking on my TV. I have to do this as I live in a shared building, with other flats. Foxbat121 06-06-08, 11:47 AM Keep in mind that HDMI interface has auto-negotiate functionality. When you connect to a TV directly, the TV will tell the player it can only accept PCM 2.0 via HDMI. And the player will operate in PCM 2.0 mode regardless what your digital mode setting is. Ph8te 06-06-08, 10:41 PM I thought it was the other way around: PCM - Onboard decoded and secondary audio retained Bitstream - Sent in Bitstream and no secondary audio retained No? You are correct, thats what I get for multi tasking :p PCM=All audio including player\secondary audio....... Audiophile=Main track only, d2thez 06-07-08, 07:33 AM Then I guess my last questions are: -do I turn on PCM Downmixing -do I go into the speaker setup and disable all but the front 2 speakers bradavon 06-07-08, 11:02 AM -do I turn on PCM Downmixing Yes. I'd be so surprised if your TV speakers could handle audio above 48Khz. -do I go into the speaker setup and disable all but the front 2 speakers Unless I'm mistaken those are for Analogue outputs so you may as well leave them alone. Even if they're not just for Analogue (Maybe HDMI Multichannel) they're not relevant when we're talking about Stereo only audio anyway. In short it won't make any difference either way. I'd leave them as they are. Talk2Me 06-10-08, 12:22 PM I am a high-end 2 channel guy. With my JM Labs Alto Be I set my 5000 to PCM and in speaker settings, turned all off except front 2 speakers.I might add a JL Fathom for 2.1.:) patsc23 06-10-08, 03:36 PM little bit off topic - but why is it when i choose re-encode it sometimes plays only 2 channel (i have dd/dts receiver) is it bc of the audio format of the BD? i thought re-encode would make it a 5.1 track... It sounds like you're playing a TrueHD track on an old firmware version. Upgrade to firmware 1.3 and you should get multichannel from TrueHD. bradavon 06-10-08, 04:53 PM Following on from what Rapter said, it will only give you 5.1 if it's 5.1 to 7.1. If it's 2.0 you'll get DTS 2.0. patsc23 06-12-08, 12:14 PM im still waiting on 1.3 firmware u/g - of course sammy is taking forever sending it to me I guess i just assumed re-encode would change it to 5.1 automatically patsc23 06-12-08, 12:15 PM Following on from what Rapter said, it will only give you 5.1 if it's 5.1 to 7.1. If it's 2.0 you'll get DTS 2.0. you're referring to the receiver im using? bradavon 06-12-08, 01:17 PM Any receiver. I don't know what receiver you're using. I was probably stating the obvious but I was clarifying the soundtrack needs to be 5.1 to 7.1 to get 5.1 from DTS Re-encode. patsc23 06-12-08, 01:38 PM Any receiver.
