When I got my pj, i bought a 100 inch screen but room size only allows for 96 inch image.

Will the cinematic experience be better if I go with a screen that fits the image snugly? Just wondering if having the image go all the way to the borders of the screen makes the movie look nicer.

Yes. Rather than spend the money for a new screen, why not add masking to your existing screen.

I thought I was getting a 92" screen for 88" where my projector sits. Turned out to be 106" for 88". I really enjoy my screen and dont feel the need to cover up the free space

You can use black felt to mask off the unused portion of the screen.

My experience is that if I watch different content with different aspect ratios then the "null" or empty portions of the screen will be of very different sizes so I'n not sure how one can mask those very different and changing areas.

When we watch 4:3 aspect ratio content the non-image screen areas are very different than US HD TV aspect ratio (16:9) and totally different again when we watch commercial movies which can have five or more completely different aspect ratios than 4:3 and 16:9 as they are MUCH wider with completely different size "bars" or null areas for each.

Maybe if you have a bright, white screen these null areas are more of a visual distraction/problem but with our gray Da-lite screen we don't even notice these areas.

I would prefer being able to resize/zoom in or out to adjust to different content and can't imagine why anyone would need to mask any area of their screen but I could be missing something.
