I just purchased a pair of Athena AS-F1s from ebay. I currently have the Point 5 series from athena and a Sony WM-250 sub(its weak). My room is fairly small only 12x12. I'm putting the F1s as my LF and RF and moving the two S.5s to the side and making it 7.1.

My question is should i set the F1s as Large or small? My receiver is a Panasonic SA-XR55 and i believe when you set the speakers to large it disables the sub. Well any input i'd greatly appreciate it.

AS-F1 work best around 70-80Hz crossover, unfortunately the Point 5 are more of a 120-150Hz crossover speaker due to their small size.

You could set the AS-F1 to large with the Point 5 crossed over at 150Hz, this will result in some "missing" bass below the capabilities of the AS-F1 (since they aren't a full range speaker) but you will still get all the LFE and redirected bass from center/surrounds in the Sony sub.

Or you could set the AS-F1 to small like the others and use a 150Hz crossover for all of them. You won't be using much of the F1's bass abilities but they will still have a higher quality sound than the Point 5s. If you wanted to lower the crossover to 80Hz for 2-channel music you could try that, but for surround sound audio you probably don't want to use 80Hz with the Point 5s.

The last way is a bit more complicated, but it's the way I would probably set up the system if I was in your shoes AND you don't blast the volume for movies. Also if you use an external SACD/DVD-Audio player don't do this. Set the AS-F1 to Large and have the crossover at 150Hz for the Point 5. Set the Sub to Off. You can disconnect your sub RCA cable. Then get some speaker wire and connect the Sony sub to the Front outputs of the XR55; use the same terminals that the AS-F1 are connected to, or you can probably just use Speaker B output since the XR55 offers both. Do not connect the AS-F1 to the Sony sub, leave them connected to the receiver. Set the crossover dial on the Sony sub to somewhere between 60-80Hz as a starting point.

Basically what that last option is doing is sending all redirected bass from the Point 5s and the LFE bass to your speakers and the Sony sub. You want to tweak the crossover and volume on the Sony sub so that it blends well with the Athenas. If you have a SPL meter there are ways to make the adjustment by measuring instead of by ear. That configuration will work great for stereo music and for surround sound, the only thing that will get you in trouble is if you turn it up really loud and the AS-F1 get overdriven from the LFE+redirected bass that is present. But, with that small Sony sub I don't think I'd be turning it up super loud anyway.

Some receivers have separate crossover settings for the various channels to prevent this sort of complication. Lots of people have tower fronts, that aren't full-range, and small surround speakers, so it's a common issue.

thanks for the reply jvg, i'm probably gonna try the first two ways. See which I like more. Eventually i'm going to upgrade my sub to either a Dayton 10" or a BIC H-100. Till then i'll make do with the info you gave me, thanks!
