Is the mfw that much better than the hsu. Would I be able to notice a difference at normal listening levels. I am mostly into movies. Need opinions, thanks.

if you havent experienced great subs, either one will make you happy.

I really dont think its that much of a difference period. People will split hairs on this stuff way too much.

The Vtf 3.3 (with a turbo) probably goes a bit lower (and isn't in short supply :) ) ... the MFW-15 is probably louder within it's usable range ...

I should disclose that I haven't heard the MFW in action ... but the pictures sure are nice. :D

I think you nailed it. The MFW-15 was an upgrade from my Definitive ProSub 100tl, which was my first decent sub. I considered SVS, Hsu and Outlaw. In the end, rather than freaking out about what to get, I just pulled the trigger on the MFW-15 based on reading tests and impressions. Even if I guessed "wrong" I was still going to wind up with a tremendous sub for the price.

In my mind, I think the odds were in my favor. Whatever I picked out of the usual suspects it was going to sound great and be a major upgrade.

I have heard SVS subs in the same price range, and the MFW-15 is right up there with them, while looking a little nicer IMO.

As others have said, both are GREAT subs and Dr. HSU is a phenomenal designer. Mark Seaton was the designer of the MFW-15 and I believe he really hit the nail on the head with this guy (or gal ;) ).

I have dual MFW-15's in my HT room and with the gain at 1/4 they put a smile on my face every time I listen to either movies OR music. That was a big distinction for me in my decision was the MFW-15's ability to be extremely agile and accurate while playing music. I have to say, it does both very amicably.

Try and get an audition of an MFW and HSU in your area. Most owners are very happy to open their homes to have people come listen to their toys. If you head over to av123's forum you can do a post for an audition and should be able to come up with someone fairly close that has one.

Good luck!

LOL ... and here I was thinking that my single VTF3.3 with the amp volume barely above 0 is a bit of overkill in my room. ;) :D

At "normal" levels it would surely depend on the material. The HSU is a variable tune subwoofer so if you had it tuned for max output (reccomended setting) there is a small amount of material that the MFW-15 would be better on and you may notice a difference. For 95% of material the vast majority of people would likely not discern much if any difference between the two.

PLEASE NOTE I have not heard the HSU 3.3 just the 3.3 HO

If you can wait I think the MFW will have slightly more output capability but we won't know for sure until we get some independant GP tests done.

If you can't wait then obviously the HSU is the best choice.

I assume the finish doesn't matter or you wouldn't be asking since the MFW comes in a variety of finishes all of which are superior to the HSU.

Why would you want to do that? IMHO, there's no reason to get a sub if you ain't goin' sub-sonic with it. ;) :D ... Of course, it might help if your mains have a -3dB point of 26Hz.

The MFW-15 seems from opinions to be a great sub I have HSU VTF3 MKII's and considered changing to MFW's but the availibilty is a turn off seems like they hype there products but then are slow to deliver.

I'm not sure I follow your logic. I haven't seen AV123 do much if any hype of their own products.

I agree there is a lot of hype surrounding the MFW-15. I also agree they were late on delivery.

I don't know how long you've been around but the VTF-3 HO from HSU was hyped and delayed far longer. I still bought one when they became available.

Regardless - my personal concern is not how much or how little hype a company generates - it is how much performance I get for the $$$.

This is a subwoofer forum, great subs get hyped and are delayed, it's happened before and will again. In fact it happened with the great sub you own. Applying your logic, if you were in the market for a sub at or around time it was released you would have missed out on a great sub.

I can tell you I have experiened KJohn's 2 VTF3 MKII's in his double dry walled sealed room and it was nothing short of incredible. He ran a bass demo disc and I honestly thought I might puke from the sound pressure. It very quickly convinced me to go out and get a VTF3 MKII (i am now looking for another one)

I have also heard the MFW15 and it was a great sub too..but in a much different room so it would be unfair to compare them. Both subs are great....either will make you very happy (2 would be better imho)

btw. i have a HO Turbo on my VTF3 MKII (it fits but hangs over just slightly as the VTF3 MKIII is wider by about 1 inch)
the turbo was a nice add on for 75.00 :-)

I have a VTF-2 MK III and a friend recently got an MFW-15. I listened to the MFW-15 in my room and compared it to the VTF2.3. In my room, I liked the VTF2.3 better. I level matched the subs, but did not use any equalization. I also only listened at normal volume levels. In a large room, at higher decibel levels, the MFW-15 will probably have more output. I do like the smaller size of the Hsu. By the way, the Hsu subs are going to be having some real veneer options starting either this month or in July.
