Hello,

This is my first post to forum. I have visited this forum many times over past few years and must admit it has been a tremendous source for all my HT questions. I owe my beautiful HT setup to this forum!

I am in the market for a new Blu-ray player and came down to two choices. PS3 and Samsung BD-P1500. I am having trouble deciding between the two choices.
While I know that Samsung will work with my old NEC LT240K projector as I have Component to VGA cable and Sammy has component out. I am not so sure for PS3 since it has only HDMI out.

Will the PS3 work with my NEC? Can I connect the Sony component AV cable that they sell for PS3 to my existing component cable using female to female component coupler?

Thanks in advance

Without a digital input, you won't be able to use HDMI. Go for the Sony.

Well I took the plunge and got the PS3 from walmart. Got the $100 gift card too!
I tried the Sony Component AV cable as I mentioned and was able to see the content on the big screen. I put in Planet Earth BD in and watched few scenes. I have to say I am not very impressed as I had watched it on my Plasma on HD. The resolution looks like its from DVD.
I did some more research and decided to use HDMI to VGA. I have ordered HDFury and HDMI-DVI cable from monprice. I will try that out next week and will see if I can get the resolution to match my projector(1080i). Will post the results on this forum.

Got the HDFury and 35' HDMI to DVI cable and hooked up the NEC PJ with PS3. The connections is PS3 - HDMI/DVI cable - HDFury - Projector. I had little trouble setting it up and was seeing no image for first 15 minutes. Finally figured out that I was actually connecting the HDFury to RGB out on my projector :)
Once I connected it to RGB in it started working fine. I had set my resolution to 1080p and put in the planet earth disk. The image was horrible and had lot of flickering. I changed the resolution to 1080i (my PJ's native resolution) and voila the picture was perfect.
If anyone is hooking up PS3 to old PJ's that does not have HDMI I would highly recommend the HDFury. Although it costs around 100 bucks its still worth it. Its far less than going for a brand new PJ :)

Hi.

I have been running my LT240K with a Momitsu upconverting DVD and my Dish HD with a component to RGB cable. I have set the resolution to 720P. I have a GREAT picture but it is not full HD, since the PJ can only do XGA.

When you say that you hooked up the PS3 with a HDFURY to the PJ, do you mean the LT240K ? The PJs native resolution is XGA . So even if we feed it 1080i what we can see is still XGA right ??
