View Full Version : Your backup PJ, what is it?
Supremelectron 06-06-08, 03:17 PM I am the proud owner of a Infocus 7210. I love it dearly. However, I know at some point that I may have to send it in for service or something (I hope I'm lucky enough to never have to do this).
In the meantime I'm looking into a replacement projector in the case that I ever have to be without my 7210 for an extended period of time.
Am I the only nut that does this? I'm sure some of you guys have backup PJs as well.
My question is, what is your primary and what is your backup?
I'm looking into a Optoma H79 as I think he'll do sufficient service if 7210 ever goes down.
BuffaloJim 06-06-08, 03:19 PM The TV.
DaGamePimp 06-06-08, 03:29 PM Mitsu HC3000 will be our back' up (for daily use) ...
Right now we have a Sharp 12k mkII in the main HT and I am in the process of making a secondary media room with an ISF'd Mitsu HC3000 . The secondary room will get the most use for daily viewing and we'll use the main HT for more critical viewing (Sharp 12K is getting the ISF treatment this Sunday) .

Supremelectron 06-06-08, 03:45 PM That's a nice backup. I remember seeing some of your screenshots via the HC3000.
Sweet!
When are you gonna make some screenshots from your MKII?
Primary will be an Epson 1080 UB as of this evening. My Panny AE900 will be my backup if need be.
No, you are not. I've always had backup pj in my HT room even when I had CRT pj.
I also use my backup pj to view SD.
Here is my setup, top is Sony VW60 and bottom is backup pj Yamaha DPX1100.

Travis R 06-06-08, 04:23 PM LOL.... The TV is also my backup
Alex512 06-06-08, 04:33 PM Primary: VP-12S4 until I get my VP-15S1 and the back-up unit , until I sell it is the RS1.
Two projectors???...why didnt I think of that?....wonder what my better half would have to say about that...:p
I wonder what I can come up to explain why I would need two......
But ya If I did get another my HD65 would hang around for emergency purposes...But currently my 50" samsung DLP is my backup, even though I catch myself moving up now to watch it. My eyes get spoiled with the 120" screen...
westgate 06-06-08, 05:00 PM my backup is 2 flat panels.
schroedk 06-06-08, 05:23 PM Okay, I thought I was the only crazy one who thought this way...
My primary projector is a Panasonic ae1000u, and I recently picked up a slightly used (<200 hrs) Sanyo PLV-Z5 to keep as my backup. I was also curious as to the image the Z5 can throw. Obviously the Panny is a better projector, but the Z5 is no slouch, either.
Akuan with that set up you must not be married or you have an extremely tolerant wife
BTW my backup is a Mits 57" Diamondvision DLP that is in the adjacent bar area of my basement

Sweet!!
That is an above average backup.
Supremelectron 06-06-08, 06:08 PM I'm married and my wife never gives me grief about my electronics fetish. As of matter of fact, she supports me most of the time - as long as the bills are paid.
I must be pretty lucky because most of the guys I know and even here on the forum complain about their wives being intolerant of projectors and big screens.
My wife is a bit of a tom boy, so maybe that's it. I'm not complaining...
Right now my main unit is a vp-12s4 I've had for a couple of weeks now. My backups would be the HD70 it replace which I may hook up for video game use and my first H31 which I can't seem to part with.
frank456 06-06-08, 07:20 PM My main projector which is on every night for 6-8 hours is a Panasonic ax200. We use this for movies-television-ps3 and have over 1500 hours on it with no problems. My backup projector is a Sharp 20000 which is 6 months old and has 50 hours on it. It seldom gets used unless we have company over and really want to impress the crowd. I calibrate customers projectors at home in my own theater and do software and firmware modifications on my 'third' mount. You could say that I have a different backup projector every few days. I feel so lucky.:o
FremontRich 06-06-08, 07:34 PM My backup is my Mits HC3000 and I use it to watch cable TV, mostly hidef programs. My main projector is a Marantz VP15S1 which I really enjoy watching hidef movies. I feed it with a LG BH200 dual format player. I have both HD DVD and Blu Ray discs.

nightfly13 06-07-08, 12:29 AM While I'm not sure 'backup' is entirely the most accurate description, but vacation projector is my Mits PK-20 pocket projector. A week of movies and Halo 3 over our last trip to Goa proved what a decent machine it is, as long as it's not on bright mode (which tints everything green - fine for Halo). 65-70" screen on a light cream wall - surprisingly good! Having to pack a 2.1 multimedia speaker system kinda defeats the ultra-portability of the PJ, my 2.5 year old son still asks for Halo every single day, and has learned that, when I switch on the UPS for the main projector (also a Mits DLP - HD1000u) that he should spring and turn off the TV and then takes the prime seat in the house and claps while staring up at the screen.
Nobi's backup is almost as awesome, though :)
frank456 06-07-08, 04:20 PM Nobi125: :D:D:D I loved it.
hconwell 06-08-08, 05:53 PM When I purchased my new IN76, I also bought a new IN72 real cheap. With that purchase, I got a spare lamp plus a spare projector with the exact same chasis and form factor. It's a drop in should I need to take the 76 down for any reason.
That was 18 months ago. Since then, I've become so completely happy with my theater built around this series (IN) that I just ordered an IN78. With my original projector now at over 1700 hours, I figured to give it a rest.
So once I put the 78 in place, I'll have a nice 76 and a 72 as a backup. My hope was to give my current physical theater layout many years of life. Simply put, I wasn't looking forward to having to remount my projector and anamorphic lens. Now, perhaps, I won't have to for a while.
CT_Wiebe 06-08-08, 06:32 PM When my Toshiba MT700 (720p) lamp failed, I bought a cheap Mits HC3 at a Fry's sale (about $600). It's my backup PJ, and runs like a champ. The HC3 is only 960 x 540, LCD, resolution (1/4 HD), but it does a very respectable job, and neither of us are that bothered by the visible SDE that it displays on our 106" screen (we both suffered through the old SGA computer monitor days - in the 70's).
The backup's backup is a 32" LCD (768p) HDTV set, which we use to watch TV.
