View Full Version : Samsung 5K HT screenshots
snowtrooper1966 06-06-08, 11:04 PM Greetings!
Thought it might be interesting to see how you all have your 5K's placed in your system.
Now that the player is passing the hi def codecs, I feel like I have a new setup!

bradavon 06-07-08, 10:57 AM Cool photos. I was planning to take some of my setup soon. I'll upload them when I do.
SpenceJT 06-07-08, 12:28 PM +1 on the nice photos! I love the look and warm feel of real wood. It looks as if your 'man-cave' is at the top of the house. Did you end up doing anything to isolate the audio from the remainder of your home?
I have a 360 degree QuickTime VR of my HT. I wonder if the web sight would support it.
I need to update it, now that I've upgraded to my Samsung BD-UP5000 and Onkyo TX-NR905 receiver (not that you'd see them in the QT VR).
...else I can always upload it to my website and link to it.

My ceiling is super thin. It annoys my neighbours above me at times. I have to turn my amp off after 10pm, as even TV Broadcast stereo audio is too loud :(.
allargon 06-07-08, 01:40 PM Dang it! I was going to start a screenshots thread for all the combo players. You beat me to it! :p
Nice cabin (and nice setup). I have to call you out though. At nearly 12,000 feet you must only watch movies in the summertime. I know if I had a place at Kirkwood I would be on my board all the time in the winter.
SpenceJT 06-07-08, 04:41 PM Okay, this is more a proof of concept. What should appear via the link, is a Quicktime VR file. Click and drag your cursor around on it to rotate the view. Alternatively, you can also 'right click' and save it, to manipulate and view it in full screen.

The entertainment rack is a 'before upgrade' photo, which still had my old Kenwood 5700 changer and Onkyo TX-DS989 receiver.
Here is a photo with updated equipment.

bradavon 06-07-08, 06:35 PM Do you need a particular version of QuickTime Player to play that QuickTime file?
I use Media Player Classic for QuickTime files and it just displays a 709x167 video (so VERY stretched) that plays like a normal video. I also get an error about not having the required MP4 audio codec installed too. I guess I could easily fix that one.

I'm not sure - I've got QT 7 and it plays, so at least QT v7 and later perhaps? Quicktime should be a free download.
snowtrooper1966 06-07-08, 07:11 PM Greetings.
Thanks all!
Spence,
Nice rack!
That quicktime did not work for me, and I have version8?
I am fortunate that I live in a stand alone chalet, and noise for neighbors is not an issue!!!!
I did not do any soundproofing at all, since it is just me and SnowtrooperJr, my 2.5 year old.
I have some more photos of the "mancave" to give context for the above mentioned details and to help answer some of the questions.

And finally from the hallway toward front of chalet:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o23/snowtrooper1966/mancave9.jpg
The main drawback to this setup is the huge bay windows. It hardly qaulifes as a cave:(
The shape of the upper windows make it very difficult and expensive for window treatments, but I have some plans after I save some dough. I am lucky that the Samsung HL-S 6187 W is VERY bright.
I do tend to spend days riding during the winter, so that is not a big deal, but spring and summer day viewing could be better.
I do love the wood and high vaulted ceilings. Makes for a great soundstage IMHO, and the 3 foot foundation crawlspace combined with the 15 inch sub really makes the LFE rumble! Again, no neighbors!:D

James

Cool photos.

Thanks, Vinnie!
Tha place was a real dump when I got into it. I pretty much gutted the kitchen and both bathrooms. Spent about 40k on the materials for the rennovation.
I am still working on it, and the capret seen in the dining area is to be replaced with vinyl flooring. The entry just in front of the front door will be tile with wood.

+1!!
Very nice snowtrooper1966!! It looks like a fantastic and relaxing home! I love the natural wood. ...except is that a 'pink' couch that I see? ;)
As for Quicktime? Could it be related to bandwidth? The file is nearly 4MB and takes a bit of time to come up.
Okay - here is the version I am running and it opens on my PC.
http://www.spencesplace.com/Images/QuickTime.jpg
Here is a screen-cap of the 'focal point'.
http://www.spencesplace.com/Images/QuickTime2.jpg (http://www.spencesplace.com/Video%20Clips/BasementPano2.mov)
As you can see by the logo on the screen, the two Serenity ornaments (one Serenity, the other a 'Reaverized" version of same) and the Jayne Cobb hat, I'm a fan of a little known, short-lived television series. A recent edition to my collection of memorabilia includes a replica of Captain Malcom Reynold's gun (which is now poised on top of my left tower, in front of the hat).
My man-cave is called the "Serenity Cinema", because it is my place to get away from it all. ...now I'm wishing I had a nice cabin-like place in the mountains, but we don't have mountains here in Wisconsin.
Can anyone else open (or not open) the QuickTime VR clip (http://www.spencesplace.com/Video%20Clips/BasementPano2.mov)?
Spence
How did you do that 3d thing? It's so cool. nice place btw. :D
bradavon 06-08-08, 12:36 AM The file is 2.3Mb, should it be 4Mb? I'd be surprised if it's Bandwidth, it's only 2/4Mb.
I'm pretty sure in my case it's because I'm not using the QuickTime Player. Media Player Classic uses the Official QuickTime files in it's engine but it's not exactly the same.
I'll have to try the proper QuickTime Player, which is Free, provided you don't need Full-screen, that's in Pro only.
snowtrooper1966 06-08-08, 01:29 AM Great setup/room, Spence!
I did have an older version of Quicktime, so it was not loading. I have updated and there are no problems now.
I will ignore the crack about the "pink couch";)
Love the hat and gun up front and the Vader helmet in the back of your room.
I am sure you noticed the ship in my 2nd set of screen shots. That was indeed aimed @ you, Spence! Always liked your sig. That show was priceless, and one of the reasons I chose to start with HD DVD was that the film, Serenity, was one of the first available titles....

James

SpenceJT 06-08-08, 07:47 AM How did you do that 3d thing? It's so cool. nice place btw. :D
Thanks pobff!
It wasn't 3D so much as it is 360 degrees. ...but now that you mention it, I've dabbled in 3D photography and may now see if I can come up with a descent 3D rendering of my area. HECK! Perhaps I could take my 360 degree photos and render them as 3D! now that would be cool! :D
I used an application called "Panorama Factory", and took the photos in 'portrait' orientation using a tripod for horizontal precision. Taking the photos with my camera tilted 45 degrees (portrait), allowed for a greater number of photos with less potential for distortion when the application blended them together.
As for the application - it is pretty cool. I don't recall how I stumbled upon it, bit it is very comprehensive in it's level of detail. At the time I purchased it, it had listings for most all popular brands and models of cameras. These listings contained optical specifications for each of the models (barrel distortion, wide-angle distortion, focal length, etc.). Once you select your camera (there is a manual mode if your camera is not listed), you import the photos, arrange them in order (if they aren't consecutively named) and let the application do it's job. It will match up common points along the edges of the photos, warp, blend, and adjust color/contrast etc. as it works. The application can stitch/blend anywhere from two, to somewhere around eleven (as was the case with my basement) photos and render them as a variety of panoramic photos right up to and including 360 degree quicktime VR files.
I think the application also allows for the linking of photos, wherein you can click on a photo containing a doorway, and link to another photo, or series of 360 degree photos, so someone with enough time could create a virtual tour of their home.
As for Firefly and Serenity? I found that the series and show brought back a sense of fun that I hadn't experienced since I saw Star Wars (age 15) back in 1977. Being a middle-aged adult, seeing something that was genuinely different, with well written characters is something that resonated with me.
...Serenity HD DVD was the first title used in my 5K. There are benefit theatrical viewings of the film happening around the world. If you want a communal experience among fellow fans (most are actually fanatics who dress up etc.) do a Google search for "Can't Stop the Serenity". Last year the anual event raised over $100,000 for "Equality Now", Joss Whedon's charity of choice.
SpenceJT 06-08-08, 08:20 AM Now snowtrooper1966 has me inspired! :D
Felt the need for a few detailed photos of my modest memorabilia collection.
Starting at the foot of the stairwell, my custom made Home Theater Poster along with some Classic Universal Studios Movie Monsters. Now that I've gone purple with a 5K and HD-audio capable receiver, it is time to update my data file with some new logos and have that poster re-printed.

Want to know about the hat? Catch the episode entitled "The Message" of the prematurely canceled FOX series "Firefly". :D
bradavon 06-08-08, 10:35 AM I've seen the movie. It was good but it felt like an extended TV episode, all the poor English got on my nerves too. I didn't mind the mixing up of Mandarin and English though, that was a neat touch. I'm not interested in Firefly. Shock, horror :D.
Did they speak Mandarin in the TV series?
Thanks btw.

The 'verse' is an acquired taste. :D When series aired, I watched the first few episodes, then gave up on it. I had a hard time understanding 'captain mumbles', and thought the episodes were disjointed. I didn't give it enough episodes to understand the characters and FOX did it's best to screw the series by airing episodes out of order (which 'humped' the story arch) and pre-empting it at every opportunity. Only after it came out on DVD where the episodes could be viewed in order, did the series really take off with fans.
The movie was done fairly well, but needed to cater to both fans of the series, as well as those who had never seen a television episode.
The mixture English and Mandarin was used to play up the fact that on 'Earth that was', 400 years into the future, Chinese and English speaking countries had pretty much merged. The poor use of English was to play up the western / frontier 'feel'.
bradavon 06-08-08, 10:48 AM It's an acquired taste. :D
It would've helped if I'd seen the TV series but I get barely enough time to watch movies, let alone mega long American TV shows.
The poor use of English was to play up the western / frontier 'feel'.
It still got on my nerves :D. I'm cool with American vs. British English but annoys when it gets more severe. Many teenagers over here can barely speak it, their written form in text or e-mail is atrocious. I'm so old :D.

Thanks, it's been a hobby since my youth. Having had a grandfather, father and older brother work as theatrical projectionists no doubt warped my impressionable mind at an early age. My wife knew prior to marrying me, that all hope was lost for me, but she accepts me as I am and for that I am blessed. :)
My couch of will never fade by sunlight - I've the opposite issue you have.

I used to collect tons of smaller inexpensive Star Wars figures and the like, but my place was in danger of being overrun by miniture armys. I have since sold most of that stuff and tend to collect original film production art and signed posters.

Had to show your photos to a buddy of mine that came over for some rainy-day movie viewing. We are both envious of your Darth Vader (and the artist conception poster of Davy Jones, Jack Skellington etc.).
...I am envious of my friend, who has a life-sized Han Solo in Carbonite collectible that he picked up prior to marriage and has managed to convince his wife not to make him get rid of it. :)

snowtrooper1966 06-08-08, 11:55 PM Screeshots, please, pobff!
I bet you get some great reverb in the empty condo!
I remeber many years ago I had a stereo setup with some Bose 901's. Those speakers used the room like part of a speaker cabinet. That was the first thing installed in the room, and just listened to it for days before moving anything in...
It looks like you are as bad as me with the stickers still on your equipment. I bet you save all the boxes like I do too;)

It's a Yamaha. :) Yup, all high def codec as it just came out few months ago. I don't think it says "TrueHD" in big letters. Instead, it would say "Straight" meaning it was bitstreamed, and a little light with the "TrueHD" logo would show up. It's very small small logo though.
snowtrooper1966 06-09-08, 01:14 AM Spence,
The Davey Jones was a convention giveaway that I managed to get signed by most of the actors, as well as the 1 sheet poster from the first film next to it.
The Vader is from Sideshow Collectibles, makers of superb film related reproductions. Vader has real leather outfit, cloth cape and working lights and saber. He can be found on ebay for a few hundred.
The Jack Skellington art to the right of the entertainment center are called storyboards. They are one of a kind pre production concept art that the crew used to previsualize scenes of the film. They would be tacked up to a huge board (these have pinholes in corners from hanging on board) in sequence so that they could get a feel for the flow of the film before building sets.
I bought the two "Pumpkin King" 'boards from different sources and framed them together. They are from the same intro sequence. IIRC, I paid $900 and $800 for them.
Detail of intro sequence "Pumkin King" storyboards:

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o23/snowtrooper1966/firejack.jpg
The "Sandy Clause" 'boards I scored from a collector who had the forsight to collect pairs in sequence. I had a hard time convincing him to get rid of this set, but $1200 helped;)

In some of the first shots of this thread, you can see Jack Skellington heads in a case on top of 5K. These are one of a kind film used production items. On the left is a pre production soft cast mold test. On the right is screen used hard cast production head. In the following photo, you can see the production business card I got from the crewmwmber these items came from.

Maybe I should. I was just thinking it's probably overkill, especially as it's going off topic anyway, but yes why not.
Cool photos btw. I like the minimalist look. I have "a thing" against clutter. Is that two subs either side of your setup?
Two subs? It's just one sub on the right hand side. :) it's a condo, I can't have it too loud and boomy. :D
adam263 06-09-08, 05:02 PM I've never posted a picture here and when I try it looks like an attachment. How do I get it to display on my post? Thanks for any help.
I'm using my own hosting, but a lot of people use photobucket and then link the image to it.
adam263 06-09-08, 07:21 PM Here's my system. I live in upstairs apartment. My 7.1 speakers might be a little overkill, and I think my neighbors agree. The Polks each have a down firing sub. The downstairs neighbors didn't really appreciate it, especially when the advanced codecs came out. ;) Unfortunately the sub levels have been turned way down. I can live with it and so can the neighbors. Harmony. :D

What's that on the other side then?
Adam263, I know how frustrating it can be living with attached neghbors and not being able to crank it up. Just invite them over!
I can certainly relate to that. I cannot invite my neighbours above me to watch a movie too. My neighbours above me are both called Max, they're a gay couple (no worries about that). Nice Max is cool (very camp though :D), but nasty Max is certainly not cool. I had loads of problem when I first moved in, he even complained when all I was using was TV speakers.
The landlord sent me a snotty letter. I replied back explaining how cooperative I'd been and that was the last I heard of it. He's not complained since, result!
I do still turn my Amp off after 10pm, to be fair about it. I too have had to turn the bass right down. I've not even plugged the sub in.
Youv'e got me beat, I am still @ 5.1. Already wired for 7.1 under the subfloor, just have to get the rears and hook 'em up.My setup is currently 5.0, the sub is in a cupboard. I don't reckon I'll got to 6.1 or 7.1. I would like to plug the sub back in though, but doubt I'll be able to until I move out, sometime next year.
IMO it can get a bit silly having so many speakers in the same room, another two speakers would just be overkill IMO. It's a "living" room too :).
Bravadon- LOL, I'm so confused about your question. On the TV stand, there's center speaker, and left/right speakers. Next to the table on the right, there's this box that sticks out beyond the depth of the tv stand, that's the only sub i have. And in case I'm wrong, by sub, you mean subwoofer right?
bradavon 06-10-08, 03:22 PM Subwoofer = Sub, yes.
I've just spotted what it is, it's the table leg :D.
adam263 06-11-08, 04:46 AM Bradavon - I did try to use the flash when I took the pic, it wiped out the screenshot. I can post another pic using the flash. It's more detailed, but no screenshot. BTW, I didn't think you were being sarcastic.
The Polk speakers I have each have a powered subwoofer. The two on the sides of the LCD display. Each are pointed downward, about 3" from the floor. When the LFE settings are set correctly it sounds awesome. But, set correctly means there is going to be a knock on the door. It's cool, they have that right to quietness. And they're good people. :)

I know what you mean. That is one problem with a flash.
Does the camera have a zoom? You could try standing further back and use the zoom instead. I usually find that gives a much better photo than a photo inside without flash. You always get that yellow effect as there's nothing to compensate against the fake light from bulbs used inside.
It's cool, they have that right to quietness. And they're good people. :)
It's certainly worth keeping neighbours on your side. My neighbours are all nice, except literally 1 of them. Thankfully his boyfriend seems to keep him mostly in check, as I've not heard from him in months now.
snowtrooper1966 06-12-08, 07:10 PM More pix, please!
LOL. the thread is so quiet. The BH200 thread is even MORE quiet.

That's actually great to see and not too suprising. So many were having issues and discouraged, they seemed to spend more time on the forums than watching the 5K!
Now that it has had major surgery and is no longer crippled, everyone must be finally enjoying it!!!!
I know if that is the case, there must be a small amount of time for screenshots. C'mon, let's show all those naysayers who scoffed and bailed out what they are missing;)

Perhaps you should open it up to photos from LG owners? ;)
The LG thread is not getting any photos either. :(
allargon 06-15-08, 07:29 PM The LG thread is not getting any photos either. :(
Should probably have a mod merge the two and invite our forbears that own the BH200 as well as the dual format Plextor, LG, etc. drive owners as well. I have no objections.

oooo. Nice TV screen. (Nice screen shot of it!!!)
vinnie97 06-27-08, 11:09 AM do want! *drool*
snowtrooper1966 07-10-08, 10:48 AM Nice Kuro!
Just an observation...
You could dramaticly increase your front soundstage if you moved the front speakers out away from the screen.
It appeares that the entry door may be a problem, so if you can't put the peaker next to the dorr, perhaps mounting it above and angling it down would work.
