Howdy, newb here... just got a new sanyo plasma from wal-mart and a panasonic sc-pt760. wanting to hook up the digital audio between the two. The tv appears to have an rca/phono/coax (not sure of terminology) output and the receiver seems to have a fiber optic digital audio input... is there a cable out there with 2 different ends that match these are any thoughts on how I go about resolving this?

I did. That's why I'm here seeking assistance because I couldn't find the answer there.

There's no cable, because you'd need a converter to convert the electric pulses from the TV to light pulses that your HTIB uses.

There are converter boxes:

But you'll also need one of each type of cable as well (also available on the site.)

Thank you very much. Before I spend more money. Will buying this give me 5.1 from the tv out to the receiver if the a/v input to the tv is 5.1? Right now I've just got it hooked up using the aux r/l rca's on the receiver and the r/l outputs on the tv... I'm assuming that won't be 5.1? Haven't finished hooking it up yet so I'll probably have my answer to my own question soon. Thanks again.

If you're using the TV's internal tuner for either cable or an antenna, yes, you'll get 5.1 (from HD channels if it's available.)

Does the device sending 5.1 audio to the TV have a fiber optic digital audio output? If it does connect that directly to the receiver.

No it doesn't. It is the TV and has the rca/phono digital output. I'm pretty new to this stuff and hadn't considered that.

OK

It appears that your DVD/receiver main unit will only pass video, not audio, via it's HDMI output. This is what you should use for the video. Otherwise, you should try and use a component video connection for the video output to your TV.

So, HDMI aside, there are (basically) two types of digital audio interfaces:

1.) optical (aka toslink)
- you know what this looks like
2.) digital coax
- a digital coax output is a single RCA output and should be labeled as such
- it is usually orange

It is unlikely that your TV, no matter what kind of digital output it has (optical or coax), will pass-through true 5.1 audio to your receiver via cable connection. Some TVs will. What model TV is it so we can look at its manual?

So, most likely, you need to pass the audio directly from your cable box to the DVD/receiver main unit. The main unit, as you say, only has an optical input for digital audio. If your cable box only has a digital coax audio output, then they cannot be connected directly. You would need a digital coax to optical converter, so you could try something like THIS (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2947&seq=1&format=2).

Your only other option is to pass a simple 2-channel analog signal from either the cable box or the TV to the main unit. In this case, you will not be able to enjoy true digital 5.1 audio from your cable but instead will only be able to apply DPLII to a stereo signal. Depending upon your local cable system's broadcasts, this may not be so bad as many cable system's broadcast most channels simply as 2-channel anyway.
