Having uploaded the firmware from the LG site onto my LG BH 200 via USB, my Onkyo 805 now displays DTS 5.1 when playing the Constantine HD DVD via HDMI.

Previously it would display PCM multichannel when playing the Constantine HD DVD via HDMI.

Does this mean that the firmware upload was successful ? This is why I ask.

Prior to running the Constantine HD DVD movie again ,with the newly installed upgrades on the BH 200 I went into the setup menu of the LG BH 200 and changed the audio output selection from PCM Multichannel to DTS Re -encode, is my Onkyo 805 displaying DTS 5.1 because of the upgrade or because I simply changed the audio output setting on the BH 200 ?

The Constantine HD DVD case indicates the playback formats available are Dolby True HD and Dolby Digital Plus however neither of these formats is displayed on my Onkyo 805 when in play mode on the LG BH 200 all I can see is DTS 5.1

If the Onkyo is capable of decoding the Dolby feed, just set the BH200 to passthru mode, and then see what the Onkyo displays.

Not knowing which firmware you started with, it is hard to tell if the latest fixed issues you were having. I can say that I have yet to find a fault with my BH200 since loading the latest firmware.

Which firmware did you install? I presume the April one.

Your Onkyo 805 supports TrueHD and DTS-HD MA right? If so here are your options, when sent over HDMI:

1. PCM Multi-Channel - All Audio formats (including TrueHD) decoded on-board by the LG BH200 and sent out in Multi-Channel PCM (Lossless or Losssy), except for DTS-HD HR or MA which is sent out as Lossy DTS Multi-Channel (i.e - the Core)
2. DTS Re-encode - All Audio formats from HD-DVD/BD (DVD is unaffected) transcoded to 1.5Mbps Full-rate Lossy Multi-Channel DTS - This is why everything is appearing as DTS, you've told it to :).
3. Primary Pass-Thru - All Audio formats sent out in a Bitstream form for the Amp to decode. If your Amp supports Lossless audio (PCM, TrueHD, DTS-HD MA) it will do the decoding, this is the only way to hear DTS-HD HR or MA in the full lossless bitrate.

DTS Re-encode is designed for Optical only Amps, there shouldn't be any reason you need to use it with an Amp which has HDMI. Primary Pass-Thru is for HDMI 1.3 Amps and PCM Multi-Channel for HDMI 1.0-1.2 Amps.

There is one exception to that last rule and that is Secondary audio soundtracks (such as Profile 1.1. PIP Commentaries) which need PCM Multi-Channel or DTS Re-encode to work.

If your Amp supports DTS-HD MA and TrueHD set it to Primary Pass-Thru, and PCM Mult-Channel when you specifically want to watch the PIP Commentaries.

is my Onkyo 805 displaying DTS 5.1 because of the upgrade or because I simply changed the audio output setting on the BH 200 ?
Because when set to DTS Re-Encode every audio format (except MPEG audio) on HD-DVD and BD is transcoded to DTS. It would've done this before you upgraded the firmware too.

You said before you upgraded you had it set to PCM Multi-Channel. That's why it was PCM Multi-Channel not DTS before.

In the Onkyo 805 manual it states that the passthrough mode must be accompanied with HDMI and Digital Optical cables simultaneously connecting the 805 and the BH 200 I am running HDMI only.I will attempt the passthrough anyway and see if the reciever displays the expected audio formats, if not I will post the upgrade I installed and see if it is the upgrade that solves the problem of the BH 200 not flagging the recievers with the DTS-HD MA and TrueHD modes .In regards to that specific upgrade this site [AVS] has several posts indicating which is the correct patch for the problem and yet no two recommended patches are the same file size and I have found it very confusing ,any clarity on that issue would be appreciated once I have determind my players status.

Really? That doesn't make any sense at all. The manual could be referring to something else. As far as the BH200 goes you don't need both connected at the same time, like you say you shouldn't need to use Optical.

I will attempt the passthrough anyway and see if the reciever displays the expected audio formats
You've not said what Firmware version you're running? You can check by going to:

1. Setup
2. TV Aspect
3. 16:9
4. Press 1, 3, 9, 7, 1, 3, 9
5. Press ENTER

If it doesn't work try PCM Multi-Channel. For HDMI Amp users DTS Re-encode should be the last resort. Your Amp supports Lossless audio so it would be a shame not to use it.

If not I will post the upgrade I installed and see if it is the upgrade that solves the problem of the BH 200 not flagging the recievers with the DTS-HD MA and TrueHD modes.
It is the firmware. You need LG BH200 firmware version March (Beta) or April. Prior to the March firmware TrueHD was TrueHD but it was only 2 Channels and DTS-HD HR/MA wasn't supported at all.

In regards to that specific upgrade this site [AVS] has several posts indicating which is the correct patch for the problem and yet no two recommended patches are the same file size
It shouldn't be confusing. It's detailed here, this is THE thread to read (first post):

The problem existed as I presume you originally ran firmware older than March (specifically November or January), which doesn't properly support TrueHD and doesn't support DTS-HD HR/MA period.

In short you just need to install the April (Official name: BH02080402F) Firmware and 0702 Driver.

I hope that helps :).

It looks as though I have BH02080402F as you have suggested as being the correct download however the driver is listed as 0701 ? oddly BH02080402F is not to be found on the LG website so I am not sure how I got it unless the zipped file name is different from the unzipped !.

You need LG BH200 firmware version March (Beta) or April. Prior to the March firmware TrueHD was TrueHD but it was only 2 Channels and DTS-HD HR/MA wasn't supported at all.

LG_BH_LV221BH is the firmware I have loaded onto my BH 200 that is the file name directly from the LG website , what surprises me is that after going into my BH 200's menu I see that the firmware there is listed as BH02080402F ??? and the driver is listed as 0701 . So it appears I have half of Bradovons instructions correct.

Q 1 Bradavon ,,,how are you getting dates for the firmware you speak of and what is Beta

Q 2 Why is the download from LG LG_BH_LV221BH but on my BH 200 it is BH02080402F

Q 3 Now with the BH 200 set to passthrough with the Constantine HD DVD playing ,my Onkyo 805 displays Dolby Digital Plus wheras before it displayed DTS does this mean I have the correct firmware loaded on the BH 200 and if so how can that be if I have the 0701 driver and not the 0702 driver as you have suggested.Q 4 Where do I find the 0702 driver

Q 5 Is Dolby Digital Plus lossless and if not what is ? how is it displayed ?

Q 5 If I am supposed to look for a file extension BH02080402F on the LG website ,but it appears differently on the LG website as I have pointed out how did you all find the thing , and how is anyone supposed to find anything if what your looking for is not what your seeing?????????/

Thanks for now ,,,,,,,,Darren
