Ralph, great column! I enjoyed-read all the pages. I have just
one question. you and some fellow posters have discussed some
BR titles as almost reference material.
you have some listed for best audio, video and as both best audio
and video. I am curious as to why you did not make a section for
those that might be considered the best for reference?

Been lurking here for a while and since I just got my first BR player
as I missed out on the Christmas clearance of the Panasonics. I
now am the proud owner of the dmp-bd60(5) from costco, comes
with hdmi cable. I am running things on a low budget (retired) and
wanted a good show off BR movie, your posts help.
thanks,
and thanks to all posters that shed light on the good life!

I don't recall ever seeing one although I did recommend that one should be done. The night scenes on this movie look unbelievable on my Kuro 111FD - 05FD BD player combination!!!

I concur about the night scenes. Don't have the 111FD but have the XBR8 and just blew me out of the water. Just unbelievable. That's why i asked for a review because i just watched it again a few days ago.

I would like to recommend 24 Season 7. I am really thinking of buying season 7 on blu-ray. Its been a great season so far and the finale is near! I just wanted to get an expert opinion on video quality first.

Looks like Hollywood is set on ruining another great foreign film.

Tell No One (which i recommended here a while back) is being remade. Do yourself a favor and rent/buy the original before the Hollywood version comes out.

The Illusionist hasn't been released in the US on BD yet. One link is for a listing for the import and the other is just for you to sign up to be notified if Fox ever announces a domestic release.

I am expecting delivery of my first Blu-ray player next week (an Oppo 83), and I'm just now considering which Blu-rays I should consider buying, or renting on Netflix. I have a surround system with Magneplanar speakers and an 18-inch Velodyne sub, and I am into good surround sound. I'm also using a projector with 92-inch screen. I have read the recommendations on this forum, and several of them sound interesting. Moving into some other categories, however, could anyone suggest good BDs of videos such as those listed below:

I'm interested in classic movies, and concerts. Although I realize that the audio on older movies won't be spectacular, does anyone have recommendations relative to BDs of some of the classics such as Casablanca, Sound of Music, Lawrence of Arabia, American in Paris, Dr. Zhivago, 2001, Godfather, Star Wars, West Side Story, James Bond, My Fair Lady, etc. Again, I realize the sound may not be the best, but the wide-screen films should look nice. Also, it would seem that travel docs, such as those of Rick Steves, would look great on BD.

I'm also looking for good concert BDs. For example, the Rolling Stones (Shine a Light, Biggest Bang?), Johnny Cash, John Denver, Oakridge Boys, etc. Also, classical music, including opera (such as Die Fledermaus, Magic Flute, Carmen, Aida, etc.) and ballet (such as Swan Lake, the Nutcracker, etc.) I understand that Opus Arte already has lots of opera and ballet music, some with lossless audio codecs.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Looking further at some of the other forum discussions, I realize that most of my questions may be answered in other forum sections. - Sorry if my post was in the wrong place. (I also learned that the Stones, in Shine a Light, are really looking old. - Sounds like I should stick with some of my older Stones DVD's.)

Sony has said they're working on Lawrence for this or next year. An American in Paris, Godfather, and Casablanca are already on the format, but I haven't seen them to comment on quality. As for classics that I have seen: Warner did a tremendous job with How the West Was Won and The Searchers. There are about a dozen of the Bond films available already. And judging by your tastes in music, you might like to check out The Last Waltz, and Roy Orbison: Black and White Night. Neither show off the best HD video can look, but both feature lossless sound and offer terrific performances.

Hi Mr. Potts-

I searched the thread and also the disk reviews and didn't see it mentioned - have you done a review on the original Terminator movie on BR? Just wondering how it stacks up to the DVD. Some reviews on Amazon.com said not to bother, some said there was improvement. Just wondering what your take would be.

Thanks!

People often over look asian blu-ray release, they are among best transfer for blu-ray, since many of their movie has dual 7.1 hd lossless sound, and red cliff is among the very best transfer out there, 3 7.1 sound (pcm, doulby true hd and even dts master 7.1) movie is also good not to mention.

Saw everyones raves for "Orphanage". Thought I would check it out. Went to the local Block buster and rented it on blu-ray. How come no one mentions that this movie is in Spanish? Only Spanish DTS-HD Master. No option for English. Is there an English version? Really don't want to read subtitles even if the audio is amazing.

Didn't know where else to post this, and this seemed as good a place as any.

But, I'm knew to BD and see that many bluray titles for purchase include both the DVD & BD. Wouldn't it make sense for Blockbuster/Disney to include both discs in a single rental (especially Disney titles)? For me, it's unlikely, assuming we keep with BD (not sure yet), that we'll rent kids BD since we can't watch the disc in other rooms and in our van.

Just my vent, and wondering what others think.

You think THAT'S bad? I'm hearing stories on Engadget HD that certain companies are removing certain features from rental discs. Also think about it from the rental companies' perspective, how much more $ would they have to lose if they did NOT allow you to spend extra $ on renting 2 separate discs? According to the article, the company claims to be losing $ on DVD rentals. I'm not saying I don't agree with you. If I had to rent 2 separate discs to watch in different places, I would probably just stick to the one format that works in both places.

Hi Ralph,

I completely understand. I did hear that Paramount sent out a very limited amount of review copies (strange). However, I do hope you find some time to do a TF2 review, as it is a somewhat "high profile" release for 2009.

Here's hoping Paramount doesn't pull the same stunt with GI Joe and Star Trek.

It makes me believe that they know reviewers will give the movie itself (PQ and AQ aside) a terrible score and do not want the reviews to affect sales. And where they know a movie is good, they'll provide a review copy.

So, any bet you may not receive a review copy of GI Joe, but will receive one for Star Trek. If that's the case, we've got Paramount figured out ;)

Can you guys name your top 5 blu rays for audio? I saw the list in the front hasnt been updated in a couple months. I just got a 7.1 home theater and want to see what it can do. I am especially looking for movies with good rear speaker usage. Thanks.

My favorites include:

Transformers
Cloverfield
Kung-Fu Panda
Dark Knight
Sunshine

You can also refer to the reference list in the Audio-tier thread.

What scenes from your top movies do you guys like to demo for people to show off your gear? I just got a new plasma and got my surround all set up and I'm only using transformers so far...looking to buy some more. I watched GI Joe last night...i thought it looked and sounded real nice.

The Patriot and Master & Commander are two of my favorite movies...but really..you put Hitman in the same category? Wow. It was cool on surround and Blu Ray and all..but it can't really share the same category as the other two. By the way Agent 47 in Hitman is played by Timothy Olyphant who also played Seth Bullock in the HBO series "Deadwood," he nailed his role...recommended for those that want to see a great western..WARNING (very offensive/high profanity/nudity) Season 1 was great goes down hill from there.

Thanks for the Blu Ray suggestions..oh not that we are missing anything, didn't see a review on GI Joe (Blu Ray) here is a link to my review...

It's too bad you can't review The Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind. Both movies, present on DVD's for years, have been released on Blu Ray to commemorate their 70th birthday. It is amazing what Blu ray has done for Gone with the Wind. It is hard to imagine it ever looked as good in the theater in 1939 when it was first shown. It looks far better than any prior DVD release. The Blu ray Wizard of Oz is also improved over prior DVD release, but nearly to the extent of Gone with the Wind.

What's wrong with Transformers 2?....
The picture is so grainny and then i put the Dark Knigh for example and it's so "PERFECT"...
I guess that the studios we're in a rush or what...

My setup is Pioneer KRP-600A and for Blu Ray is PS3 with 1.3b High End HDMI Cable.

Everyone on here seems pretty informed. I have a quick question. I hear the term lossless DTS-HD Master Audio and I am wondering if I am getting the best experience possible. I have a pioneer elite 23txh and I have been watching all the movies in prologic II because I have 7.1 set up. Isn't DTS 5.1? Could I listen to DTS on 7.1? What is the best decoding for movies?

Some tracks are 5.1/6.1/7.1...all depends on source. The pl II should be matrixing the 5.1 making it 7.1. Thats the only way to get 7 out of 5. To make sure you are using the right track (dts hd/dolby true hd) hit the status button on the pioneer's remote.

PS this should be in the audio area of the forum! ;)

Can anyone tell me about or point me to a list of 1.85:1 (16x9) aspect ratio blu rays? Correct me if I'm wrong, but as soon as the aspect ratio is anything OTHER than 1.85, aren't you losing resolution? isn't a 2.35 ratio movie no longer 1920x1080 but 1920xsomething less than 1080? It kind of bothers me that I bought this wide screen TV (Panasonic TC-P42G15) and I'm still getting black bars on the top and bottom with most movies (2.35:1 seems to be the most common ratio by far) I cant stand stretched video, or watching the movie in any other ratio than the director intended, so that's not an option. It's not like I'm swearing off 2.35, I'd just like to own a few blu rays that fill the screen. after collecting almost 600 DVD's, I have started my blu ray collection, I only have about 10, but they are ALL 2.35:1.

Avatar coming out on April 22nd will fill your screen!! Other than that, you have to look at the dvd box or read the stats on a website like Amazon. Most movies are shot in 2:35 so thats what the Blurays are. Older movies are more prevalent with the other formats, but I cant think of any off the top of my head. I am with you, on a nice large tv, it looks so good when the full height is utilized, but i buy a dvd for the movie, and whatever it is, it is. Most music concert videos will fill your screen too.

I'm fully aware about the black bars being on purpose. I'm fully aware that a 2.35 movie will have black bars on a 16x9 TV. Your link also has no way to sort by aspect ratio, for some reason, because you seem to be able to sort by any other option, nice try though. You clearly only read the part of my post that you quoted. Did you see the part where I said I owned 600 DVD's? Only 3 of them are full screen, and that was by accident. I've watched a few movies in my time, thanks.

I did find this list of 1.66, 1.78, or 1.85 aspect blu rays recently, although it may not be completely up to date:

Would love to see a review by Ralph on the new Apollo 13 bluray, as customer reviews on Amazon are bad with many saying it takes forever for it to load up, some saying it wont load on their machines at all, some saying it wont load if you are NOT connected to the internet, and some saying it loads better if you are NOT connected to the internet due to an incredible number of ads and other things coming over from the net. Overall though, a lot of negative stuff about whether or not the menu and previews work at all. I would love to see Ralph take this on and give us the true story. Right now I am afraid to buy it.

I would recommend that "A Perfect Getaway" 2009 on Blu-ray be added to the Video list. Video is absolutely phenomenal on BD, especially the establishing shots in the beginning.

And Pandorum be added to the Audio/Video category. And I've yet to watch a Harry Potter film in Blu-ray that hasn't impressed in both A/V. The uncompressed PCM soundtrack on these films are very engaging.

I didn't read through every page, so it may have already been mentioned.

Any chance of a review for this movie?
I watched this recently and found it to be a very compelling story and interesting film.
I'm not a huge fan of foreign films but this was one very good, IMO.
It doesn't have the glitz and glamor of the big Hollywood films but more than makes up for it in the story.
It's packed with plenty of suspense, thrills, and intrigue.
Would like to see your take on this and recommend this film.

It came out on blu-ray this Tuesday (July 6th) and by far was the BEST film I viewed for this week's new releases.

Salute,

Now that Heat is on BR, have you had a chance on reviewing it? I picked it up but have not opened it yet. (among other BR disks) Wanted to know what you thought first.

Thanks in advance if you do.

Also,

Is it true that Swordfish does NOT have an HD audio track? I REALLY wanted to buy this on BR but when I read the back specs and saw NO HD AUDIO track, I was deeply . Is this just a typo or does the movie exist on BR without an HD audio track? If so, why would they do such a thing? :( I'm EXTREMELY bothered by this. This is one of my all time fav flicks.

Thanks in advance for reading and researching if you do.

Although you probably haven't seen it, the WATCHMEN Ultimate Cut has a superior video transfer than the Director Cut. Sharper and more detailed...and the animation looks terrific as well.

How about reviewing Kick-Ass. One of the best films I've seen in awhile.

I couldn't agree with this recommendation more. Probably one of those most underrated movies that's came out in recent years. This one really surprised me.

Kill Bill + (any super hero flick) + superbad = Kick-ass

Yes, I also agree. This movie had great action, audio and LFE. One of the better rentals lately. Way more to this movie than most people think. Kick Ass definitely kicked ass.

Hi,

Speaking of recommendations........

I'm about to "fire-up" a brand new Bluray/HD/TV system and I was wondering, what would be everyone's choice for my first bluray purchase... ideally one that would really put my system through its paces, both in terms of picture and sound.

I've been thinking:

"Cloverfield"

"Star Wars: Clone Wars, Season One"

(Harryhausen's) "Jason and The Argonauts"

"Sherlock Holmes" (R. Downey)

"Prince Valiant" (1954 - import)

"Where The Wild Things Are"

AVATAR!

Everything else will pale by comparison - once you have viewed Avatar on a decent set via Blu-Ray you will then have a "gold standard" in which to judge all future viewings!

Don't forget "The Dark Knight" movie as well. And maybe "Kung Fu Panda" for cartoons. Both scored relatively high on Ralph's review.

There is some disagreement about the LFE, though. I certainly noticed that my Buttkickers were not doing anything in the exact scenes where I would have expected some shaking (vehicle landing nearby, tree hitting the ground, etc). It's not clear if it's part of the original mix or due to processing for home video, but there is apparently almost nothing below 25Hz for most of the film. One thread over in the subwoofer forum has 13 pages of discussion and graphs about it.

the problem with Avatar is the story. Looks great but the story is geared for youngsters. Now the gold standard for visual, audio and a story that both young and old can love is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. ( I am waiting for the BluRay extended versions)

I'm not sure if this title was mentioned previously.

"In the Shadow of the Moon" is a fascinating documentary about the astronauts who traveled to the Moon. The astronauts (except for Neal Armstrong) share their memories and thoughts about space travel as they speak directly into the camera.

The picture quality is not tremendous but it is certainly worthwhile viewing for the whole family.

I haven't seen the new BluRay version of the rings

The picture quality of the current release -- especially the first two films -- was the subject of heated discussion when the discs came out. Some people said they looked great, while others were very unhappy with the transfer and considered it to look worse than an old HD broadcast version. There's a bunch of very lengthy threads and screenshot comparisons and I think the arguments even jumped to/from other review sites.

Just checking in again regarding this particular movie. I hope to eventually here your take on the movie.

Especially, regarding the soundtrack. I felt like the dialogue was a bid muddy on The Expendables Blu-ray. I felt it got buried in the mix at times. And although there was some great LFE at times, this was not as hot of a soundtrack as I was expecting. My Onkyo AVR protection circuitry will shut it down if I try to play FOTP, Last Air Bender, or Percy Jackson at or above reference levels, but this movie barely got the AVR temps over 130 degrees. Didn't stress it out at all.

Black hawk down is a very superb blu ray movie. War movies just belong in blu ray. This paticular movie/mini series is not mentioned much, band of brothers. This has EVERYTHING. Video/Audio/Story. Its in my opinion one of the best or the best blu rays on the market. Its a bit on the pricey side because its about 80 bucks but look for it on sale i bought it one sale for 40 bucks. This is just one the best blu rays out there, and the best mini serie ever.

I just bought Close Encounters of the Third Kind 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition. One of my all time favorite movies.

There is one thing about this release that I absolutely love: when you put in the disc, you go right to the main menu in a matter of seconds. No trailers, no warnings, no BS. Thank GOD!! I am so sick of the crap I have to wade through in order to get to watch the movie I paid for. And it seems most companies will not let you press "menu" or even "skip" this crap. You have to fast forward through each preview. And since I rarely get through a movie in one sitting, the next evening I have to go through it all again! I can't go straight to where I left off in the movie (using an Oppo 93).

Anyway, I have to commend Sony for this release (although I just watched Lebanon, also a Sony release, and I had to wade through all the crap I just talked about above). I just don't get it.

I don't think The Pacific is nearly as great. A lot has to do with the nature of the battles and some has to do with the characters not being as interesting and developed as BOB. It is still worth watching but I don't feel a desire to watch it over and over like BOB.

I just watched "The Fall" (2008-Dir Tarsem Singh). It blew me away. Probably the most visually stunning film I have ever seen. Looked amazing on BR on my plasma! Great sound too (can't go wrong with Beethoven).

This reminded my a lot of "The Cell" and after looking up Tarsem...I see that was his film too. "The Cell" was darker and creepier. "The Fall" is more magical and fantastical although somewhat sad. Highly recommended.

I just received a copy of Sting: Live in Berlin and it is what I've been looking for in a Sting concert for home viewing. While the arrangements are a bit different given the full Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, his performance, voice, and supporting musicians and vocalist actually highlight the best of his songs. The video, lighting, camera angles are varied enough to hold interest without detracting from the performance. Very clean and natural colors, with stage lighting of course.

If you like Stings classic songs, this is one not to miss.

This is an excellent topic and provides some inspiration of what to buy. I'm glad that I already have some movies from the original post!

As I expected, the movies recommended are all relatively recent in the grand scale of things. It makes me wonder how well some older movies would hold up in the Blu-ray format. For example, movies like Poltergeist or A Bridge Too Far. Is it truly worthwhile upgrading older movies from DVD, especially when most players have up-conversion?

Cars was reviewed by Ralph Potts in 2009. He gave it a 98 for PQ and 96 for AQ giving it a total score of 97. Sounds like one of the highest rated blu-ray movies available!

PQ:
This is a reference quality high definition presentation that has justifiable received praise for its incredible imagery. Colors are rich, vibrant, well balanced and visually stimulating.

AQ:
The lossless uncompressed multi-channel PCM soundtrack is on par with the video and is a real treat. This is an engaging mix that utilizes the entire system to create a truly theater like experience.

Wow. Great recommendation. I loved the story (even thought I'm not a Facebooker) and the screenplay was excellent. Also, beautifully filmed. I understand it was all shot on the RED one cameras. One of the best BR's I've seen as far as cinematography...beautiful, warm tones and loved the regatta scene using what looked like a tilt/shift lens for isolated depth of field. A

I have not even watched all of my blu-ray purchases yet. Most purchased for their visual and audio quality - recommended by others. I watch my blu-rays on a 120 inch screen with a 1080p projector. Some visually pop more on a smaller screen.

Dear Ralph;
Whay haven't you reviewed the "Ben-Hur" Blu-Ray? The 6K master provides a beautiful transfer. The sea battle looks more real and better than it ever has on video. The chariot race is still one of the greatest action scenes ever put on film. It is still tied for the largest amount of Oscars won. The story holds up well and was beautifully told by a great director and cast. Why has this classic been skipped?
Best, Burt (capnvid)

I read some reviews of this set and am pretty excited about. I was at Costco tonight and I saw the box-set so I bought it...only to get home and discover I bought the DVD set! ARRRGGGHH!

My apologies capnvid but I didn't receive it for review. I am glad to hear the new transfer is doing the film justice.

Watched the blu-ray 50th anniversary "Ben Hur" over the weekend.

Outstanding!

I've watched this movie countless times (in the theater—a re-release in 1969—not it's original theatrical release—on VHS, and most recently, on DVD.

This blu-ray edition is something to behold. Strongly recommended.

Is there any way you can make a thread with a list of the must see 3D movies??

I know there are not that many titles but it's tough to search every 3D movie you reviewed individually. My system gets installed on Saturday and I will start with the best. From what I seen Cars 2 is it.

Hi,

I noticed the recent announcements fro the "complete" Harry Potter Bluray sets.

Will there be any differences between the U.S. and the British set . (besides the U.S. is on 8 discs and the British 11 discs. ) The overall price at AmazonUK seems a bit lower, as well.

Will the British be an overall better way to go in terms of quality?
The British is a "region free" set. Has this ever posed problems for
"playback" on domestic Bluray players ?

I guess this is my version on a "knee-jerk" response to the news that Warner's is pulling HP Blu after Dec 29th.

Ralph: Thanks for the great lists.

I wonder if you might consider posting a list of blu-rays that have scenes especially good for testing new TV's for thinks like black levels, motion artifact, etc.?

Just a thought. Keep up the great work!!!

(PS: 1+ to the idea of a 3D list)

One alleged difference is that the British version of Part 2 of the last film will actually have a true digital copy.

Greetings,

If you do an online search you can find recommeded media for testing the parameters you mention. I probably wouldn't add something like that to this list.

I will be adding recommended 3D titles though.. :)

Ralph how do you like those Canton speakers? Nice to see someone else rocking them. They don't get much love on AVS.
Thanks for the list. I have been using it as a buying guide. I watch more movie than most normal people, but will buy about anything for good sound.

I can't wait to see if Immortals falls on this list. As of this writing, I don't think it's on Blu yet, but I have great expectations for it. I saw it in the theatre and I hope it will transfer over well.

I also bought this one too. If you like Adele - this is a must have. Great sound and picture. Also came with a CD of the concert. Catch the preview on youtube. Warning - she does have a potty mouth.

My favorite concert on Blu-Ray is still Pink Funhouse Tour: Live In Australia. It's like a cirque du soleil show. She does a great Bohemian Rhapsody. I have had guests who have never heard of her mesmerized by the show. Very entertaining.

I am eyeing the Sting in Berlin concert next.

Need an official review of Redline (was just released 1/17.) It's an anime film with near reference video and 5.1 surround audio and a different experience than any other animated film - it's basically the tron Legacy of anime...

Got my US release in yesterday and watched it for ~ the 15th time on Blu-Ray last night (have the Japanese & UK Special/Collector Edition releases) and it was still as awesome, hilarious, and exciting as ever (in Japanese w/English subtitles...not too keen on the English Dub...)

Top notch foreign - I just picked up Black Book and Red Cliff. I really enjoyed Black Book for the story too. I can't wait to see Red Cliff (preview looks great). They use House of Flying Daggers as a demo at Gramophone - for sound and picture - and really enjoyed that one too. It's much much better than Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon - quality, story and effects.

I watched the 2011 version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night - and then watched the original 2009 European version on netflix to see how it compared. The Euro version seemed very choppy. The 2011 version had a better overall flow.

My opinion tho - Noomi Rapice is much better looking Lisbeth than Rooney Mara's version. I would not toss Noomi's Lisbeth out of bed for smoking. ;) The movies are pretty rough stuff though. Rated R for disturbing violent content including rape, grisly images, sexual material, nudity and language. I would typically avoid a film like this - but it was a very good story (and my hunch was right on what was going on - but still I was not disappointed).

Also check out Noomi Rapice in the trailer for Prometheus (Alien prequel coming this summer). I am more stoked about that movie. I have watched the trailer 20 times now.
