Greetings,

I have put together a list of Blu-ray Discs that I consider to be top notch in audio, video or both audio/video quality. There are four categories as I included a list of personal favorites as well. Some I have formally reviewed and some are in my collection but I have not reviewed them. These are not meant to be completely comprehensive lists. I wanted to offer readers a chance to check out some Blu-ray discs that in my opinion look and sound great. I will add new discs to these lists as I come across them and will make note of that in future reviews.

Have fun !

Here are a few quotes from some of my reviews:

Ice age: "The quality of the Dolby Digital soundtrack on the DVD release of Ice age was considered by many to be great demo material. Well the DTS-HD 5.1 channel Master Lossless track on this blu-ray disc takes it to another level entirely."

Master and Commander: "This is a powerfully engaging audio mix that will test the limits of your audio system."

Cloverfield: "This in an aggressive and invigorating surround mix that incorporates a plethora of aurally stimulating effects to create a captivating and sometimes frightening listening experience."

Hitman: "Man, this is a great mix ! Bass fans will love its aggressive low end and those who appreciate genre films like this that kick butt and take names are in for a real treat."

Rambo:"Gunfire and explosions had a tactile and dynamic impact that could be felt from any point in the room. The rich and immersive quality of the audio enhanced the experience to a higher level of realism".

The Nightmare Before Christmas: "This was truly one of the most enjoyable audio demonstrations I have had in my theater room."

Terminator Salvation: "The listening position is submerged into a 360 degree web of sound that is sometimes riveting as it bombards the senses with a combination of discretely placed near field and panning sound effects."

Tron: Legacy: "The action based sequences rock as the room is transformed into a three dimensional soundstage that pulsates with room energizing bass that attains room shaking levels."

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1: "This is a wonderfully involving and dynamically energized sound design that features high level sonic detail, superb directional correlation, seamless integration, and rhythmically charged bass extension that is sure to stimulate the senses."

Here are a few quotes from some of my reviews:

The Chronicles of Narina: "This is a first rate video presentation that is near flawless." "The audio presentation is superbly crafted and offers a diverse representation of the things that we as listeners look for in a good audio mix."

I, Robot: "Inky noise free blacks, superb shadow detail with high delineation, an eye popping visual design, along with vibrant colors and beautiful flesh tone reproduction." " There is enough sub 30 hz bass contained in this track to keep bass heads happy. The chase scene in the tunnel is delivered with room shaking authority as it drives the entire system to create an immersive and ultra rich surround sound experience."

Jumper: "The scenes shot in Italy at the Coliseum were visually arresting as images were razor sharp with incredible dimensional depth and lifelike texture." "This is an aggressive mix that contains demonstration level material that will test just how good your system can sound."

Saawariya : " Every detail is clearly audible within the mix which rests on a cushion of crystal clear sound that ebbs and flows with precision." "There is a plethora of colors in various tones and hues that look simply stunning in high definition. Flesh tones are highlighted by the beautiful complexions of the cast and come across with succulence and subtle texture."

Transformers: "Images exhibited high level detail, razor sharpness and resolute definition that brought out the lifelike textures captured by the camera. Dimensional perspective had an infinite appeal that was visually arresting at times. ""This is an aurally stimulating sound design that is truly capable of creating a thrilling home theater experience."

Iron man: "I appreciated the attention to detail that enabled even seemingly small background sounds and effects to be distinctly audible. This is an aggressive surround mix that makes extensive use of the entire sound platform.""Resolution is excellent as images are well detailed, vibrant and dimensionally proportionate. Close up camera shots are particularly striking at times and reveal lots of fine minutia and visible nuance."

The Incredibles: "The quality of the images onscreen can be visually arresting. Detail and definition is impeccably rendered as images have a resplendent and sparkling clarity that is appreciably three dimensional. This lossless soundtrack earns of perfect technical rating and improves upon the lossy Dolby Digital version in every way. This is not an aggressive or action style sound mix but its ability to deliver a visceral home theater experience is not to be underestimated."

Well that wraps things up. As I said this is not meant to be a comprehensive list but rather food for thought. Be sure to check back as the list will be updated. I would love to hear from others regarding their own favorites as well.

*Here at AVS the membership has assembled The PQ Tier Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10733385#post10733385) and Audio Quality Tier Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=918734) which is a rated list of top quality Blu-ray Discs. These lists are great resources. You can check them out by clicking on the links.

Thank you for this thread. Now when people ask "New to blu what to buy?" They can just look here.

There's just one problem. Where is the king of Audio/Video (that just happens to be a good film) - Black Hawk Down?;)

I've been looking for an excuse to buy Ultraviolet.:o Sweet.

Greetings,

Thanks for your posts. As I stated this is not meant to be a comprehensive total list but simply to offer some discs that were strong contenders in their catagories.

I absolutely agree with Black Hawk Down. I have not seen The Orphanage.

My top three are on your list... Black Hawk Down, Apocalypto and POTC DMC. My guilty pleasure is Casino Royale. I like to use the chase scene at the beginning to show off my theater to others.

Independence Day/Hidalgo/Extraordinary Gentleman are among my favorites. Have you posted a review on them. Are they to be compared with Narnia. Please say it's so, the scenery shots with Hidalgo could be breathtaking.

No love for Disney/Pixar? 'Ratatouille' is fantastic, and the bright, vivid colors of 'Meet the Robinsons' are video standouts as well.

Greetings,

I added Black Hawk Down as I definitely overlooked it.:o

I also added The Patriot for the same reason.

I reviewed Hidalgo and ID4 prior to coming to AVS. Hidalgo was an 86 Audio and 88 Video for a total of 86. ID4 was an 84 Audio and 82 Video for a total of 83. I will probably watch ID4 again in the near future and see if my impression is any different. The League of EG would be more comparable to Hidalgo.

Greetings,

Absolutely but I have not seen either of them on Blu-ray so I couldn't add them to my list. There is no reason why they can't be highlighted in this thread though.

By all means give the orphanage a listen. Best sounding movie I have ever heard. Everyone who has come to watch it has been just awestruck with the sound.

I did not know this was a starter list forgive my....now that i look back and reread it rude comment.... Was not really intended as such. My bd

It makes most movies sound like sdvd. A new standard for 2008.

Ralph,
In terms of video and audio quality, you have to demo/review Elton John's 6oth Birthday Bash at MSG. Its the best concert video I have ever seen. The "live" quality of it is stunning.

How about including a list of blu-ray's NOT to buy because of sound/video quality. A movie we might already own on dvd but the quality is not good enough to upgrade to blu-ray.

Greetings,

I added Black Hawk Down as I definitely overlooked it.:o

It's ok. You get everything else right, mostly. And your score for ID4 was right on.
BTW - Shoot Em' Up is another all around standout for Audio and Video. So is The Orphanage. As is Pan's Labyrinth(DNR, not that bad). Hairspray too.

I agree on Black Hawk Down... superb video and audio.

Just wait for the DC with highbrate AVC and 24 bit audio. It's hard to believe there is room for some improvement, luckily there's a another cut so Sony can re-do it.

I'm surpised I am Legend is not on the list. The audio is top notch in my opinion.

As far as accuracy is concerned it is, but there's really only 2 stand out LFE moments. But they are stand out. My biggest gripe is that the Shelby Mustang doesn't sound as sinister as anything labeled Shelby should sound.

Pat Metheney's The Way Up Live in DTS HD MA is the best sounding Live Concert DVD I've ever heard. It leaves me hungering for more DTS HD MA offerings.

OK so far I have the folllwing recommendations from you all:

The Orphanage
Ratatouille
Meet the Robinsons
Elton John 60th birthday bash at MSG
The last waltz

I will look to check as many of these out as I can.

I have Shoot em up and I am Legend and will spin them both again for consideration.

Greetings,

I don't mean to be a dissenter here, but a lot of folks have put a lot of time in the Picture Quality and Audio Quality Tier Threads.

They are stickied in the Bluray Software section.

And quite frankly are much more useful than this thread.

Thanks Mike. This thread is no way meant to replace or interfere with that thread. I have gotten a number of requests regarding my favorite discs and thought that I would provide the answer.

I agree with you that the PQ Tier Thread is definitely the definitive reference on this site.

Someone mentioned Pixar, so I thought I'd mention that I have "Ratatouille" and "Cars" and both have excellent picture quality and, so far as my untrained ears go, excellent audio as well.

I also wanted to toss a vote up for "Planet Earth". While many say that it doesn't have the best video or audio, it's quite excellent for a documentary and very fun to watch!

Greetings,

Thanks everyone for you input and feedback. I would rather not begin a list of movies to avoid. It has been my experience that this type of discussion will lead to endless debate and carry this into areas that don't belong within the spirit of this thread. The Blu-ray Software forum might be a good place to inquire about a particular disc and its strengths and weaknesses.

I'd have to disagree with Gattaca as being anywhere near good video quality. It's one of the softest images of any Blu-Ray disc in my collection and apparently they've boosted the EE in an effort to counteract this. I own both the Blu-Ray and the SD DVD and it's questionable in my mind whether the Blu-Ray has a better picture than the up-converted SD DVD version.

I just added The Orphanage and The day after tomorrow. I recently watched The Orphanage and was impressed with its DTS-HD MA audio.

I have owned The Day after Tomorrow for some time but never heard it with decoded lossless DTS-HD Master Audio. This audio presentation always sounded good but I could not get over how much better it sounded bitstreamed from the Panasonic to the Denon. Truly reference quality stuff...:)

When I get the chance Marcus I will spin Kingdom of heaven in full DTS-MA and see what it sounds like.

You gotta review The Eye, if you can. Watched it last night and DTS 7.1 HD is so clean, crisp, clear with some very intense bass in every channel that overall its one of the very best sonic presentations I've heard. Video is just ok for blu-ray, although Jess Alba is more than ok.

Black Hawk Down..... way down! It was the first Blu-ray I bought (based on the rave reviews that it got here at AVS) and IMO it is the worst video quality that I've seen since VHS... It has a very grainy / snowy picture. I nearly stopped coming to the forums at all since I felt I could no longer trust opinions here. Either my copy is defective or maybe there is something to those Scientology brainwashing rumors afterall :D

Umm...did you see it in the theater? That's how it's supposed to look! It is a great transfer BECAUSE it is able to show the grain without blocking, which is what you would get on DVD since it can't handle grain with the lower bitrates.

My PS3 arrives this week along with my 58" Panny Plasma (800u) and Denon-1909. And of course, like most everyone else, I'm chopping at the bit trying to decide what BDs to buy for showing off the new setup. I typically don't buy DVD's, I only rent them. I'd like to buy 2 or 3 Blue Ray Discs for demo purposes. I have a 7 and 8-yo so I would stray away anything that is rated higher than PG-13 and anything really violent. I have 5.1 with large Klipsch Towers and no Sub so earth shaking bass is not #1 priority on my list.

I've been reading the posts and am having a hard time to decide. If anyone can recommend specific discs and scenes as "must haves" in the PG-13 and under ratings category, I'd appreciate the input.

Wow, thanks for the quick repluies! I examined both websites and cross references everything with each other. One thing I need to think about is I need to limit my buying to movies I can see myself or my kids wanting to watch over and over (not every week or month, but once in a while), otherwise it is not a good investment for me.

I also forgot to mention I'm a bigtime Disney Animation and Disneyland Collector/Afficianado including a significant focus on POTC. With that being said here's my short list. Want I need is scene recommendations:

1. Ratatouille - As far as video/audio score, I'd go with this over cars simply because I thought this was a bit more entertaining a slightly more visually diverse film. It gets top marks everyone I look. Which scenes to show off?

2. Nightmare Before Christmas - This is simply a landmark animation film that would be a must have for any animation enthusiast like myself and the kids love this movie so it's definitely a keeper that you want to bring out at least once a year during the Halloween to Xmas period.

3. Blade Runner - This and Blackhawk Down seem to be the consensus favorites amongst most sites and forum participants as the overall current best demo disc as far as live action movies go. I'm 40 years old and Blade Runner has a special spot in my memories when I was young. I like the story much better than BHD as I'm not a big war/military movie enthusiast and much more of a sci-fi guy (I do appreciate Apocalypse now :) I can see this holding a permanent spot on the shelf. Which scenes to show off?

4. Iron Man - I split between rent or buy as I haven't seen the movie yet. Question is, does it have more impressive demo scenes than Blade Runner??

5. Pirates of The Caribbean - You should see my office. It looks like the Disneyland Gallery is having a POTC collectors event. All three movies are a must-have for me being a bigtime POTC collector. Plus the kids LOVE these movies and will watch POTC over and over. Which scenes to show off?

Honorable mention I might buy if price is cheap:

2001 - Sort of like Blade Runner. A very nostalgic movie for me, but I am completely blown away how such an old movie could be rates so highly? Which scenes to show off?

Narnia - This is another borderline rent/buy decision. We've seen it in the theaters. This strikes me as a great demo movie with kids in the room along with Ratatouille as the visuals are so rich and diverse. But maybe the POTC discs serve just as well as a kid-friendly live action demo disc(s)? Which scenes to show off?

Elton John 60th - I'm a big video concert fan. This in fact is primarily the SD discs I've bought for my permanent collection as they are excellent for playing at parties instead of just music.

I Am Legend, I-Robot, Orphanage, Cloverfield - I'm considering these but I think I will definitely rent before I buy.

Planet Earth - We rented and watched the series with the kids. They may be worthing of being in a permanent collection due to their educational value. Any recommendations on which episodes/scenes have best demo potential as this would be a cool/unusual disc to demo for people.

Greetings,

I would have to agree about Cars although that is only going from what I have read and heard as I have not seen it yet..:o

Goring strictly from the choices in my list I would consider the following:

Ice age - The opening - audio

Flight of the Phoenix - The crash sequence is incredible. - audio

The day after tomorrow - The twisters hitting Los Angeles is a good starting point. - audio

The nightmare before Christmas - pick a scene - audio/video

Nims Island - Same thing - video

Speed Racer - Same thing - video

The Waterhorse - Same thing - video

I, Robot - maybe a little violent so consider carefully audio/video

Any of the Pirates of the Caribbean films - audio/video

Iron man - The Afghanistan village sequence - audio/video

Cheers,

Fr. John

I responded to your original post but the mods deleted (I broke the rules :o).

Here's (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1066162) a link to a screenshots thread I started, it covers some of the material you mention and may give you some ideas.

1. Ratatouille - See some samples in the thread above.

3. Blade Runner...Which scenes to show off? I love the interview with Rachel scene in the corporate building. Stunning.

4. Iron Man - I split between rent or buy as I haven't seen the movie yet. Question is, does it have more impressive demo scenes than Blade Runner?? Just my opinion: not worth owning. Very fun to watch with some stellar scenes; as mentioned the attack on the Afghan rebels. The 2nd half of the movie leaves a lot to be desired for more than one viewing (this coming from a one time Shell head collector).

5. Pirates of The Caribbean I don't own any of these on BD yet but the first one is my favorite by a long shot. Too many sweeping scenes that just look great

2001 - Sort of like Blade Runner. A very nostalgic movie for me, but I am completely blown away how such an old movie could be rates so highly? Which scenes to show off? Haven't opened my copy yet but the reviews coupled with the same nostalgia you describe (I'm the same age as you and was raised on this movie) make it a no brainer.

I Am Legend, I-Robot, Orphanage, Cloverfield - Consider also Pan's Labyrinth, so rich! Also, though I've not seen it, Sunshine. It's supposed to be visually excellent.

Planet Earth - We rented and watched the series with the kids. They may be worthing of being in a permanent collection.... Don't hesitate, it's a must. Absolutely stunning. Too many unbelievable scenes to mention but Shallow Seas is obvious.

Ahhh.... so if Black Hawk Down is supposed to look grainy (I never saw in in theaters) then maybe it should get some kudos for not blocking BUT I bought it on reccomendation for use as a demo. I would rather pull my toenails out than to use that to show off my 1080p! So what if 1 person in 100,000 would be impressed by that stupid grain? I want a "window on the world" not just a dirty window !!!!!

I agree with you.
I think directors/producers lose the plot sometimes.
If they want to produce an art house movie, then fine, go for it. But for the general public, and considering the current public awareness of HD video and HD audio, then movies like Black Hawk Down and Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project I believe don't belong in anyone's list of "great" movies.

I honestly nearly threw up half way through the B W P, because of the constant moving of the camera.:(
That's not my interpretation of "enjoyable".

I think we are in a very small minority on this site, gents.

You are right about this site. In the general market place, however, part of the problem with Blu ray sales is getting people to buy something that was made to look bad.

HD advertises pq that is like looking out a window. Unless your windows are really dirty, grain etc. is not part of the real world. For some reason, directors tend to think that an audience won't get the mood of a film without using some photographic technique - which usually makes the image look like crap.

Consumers in general don't care a bit about the artistic vision of the film maker if the result makes their big investment in their HDTV, Blu ray player and expensive software look like it came from a 10 year old consumer VHS camcorder.

One look at a film like 3:10 to Yuma and will get people to fork over the $ for a whole system. Unfortunately, movies with that video quality are rare - possible, but rare.

I'm waiting for the "other side" to chime in now. I think with the digital cameras, editing equipment and what have you available nowadays, Cinematographers and Directors can really manipulate the image. The DP is now the "artist" he always wanted to be, but the tools and technology were never there before.

Interesting also how "realism" is still important in how a film, let's say an historical movie, is mounted. However, when it comes to the image, getting an expressionistic or artistic feel or look immediately trumps that. Realism goes out the window. I admit movies are not necessarily reality but there is some major contradications in Hollywood's approach to filmmaking nowadays.

Though a good movie to me to a point, Clint Eastwood's Letters From Iwo Jima is a good example. It is so drained of color I ask, why not film it in B/W? I've hated the look of most movies for 10 to 15 years now, but there are many exceptions I will grant. What can one do that is on the dissenting side.

Maybe, an earlier approach to cinematography will resurface but I doubt it, at least for some time. :(

PS3 arrived. Ran to BlockBuster, couldn't find anything on the lists we've been discussing that I could watch with the kids, other than POTC and they just watched that recently. So I grabbed one we hadn't seen, The Golden Compass.

WOW!! Either this is just how the first Blue-Ray experience is, or I may have picked a sleeper for the top list! I might have to buy this one. POTC trilogy, Blade Runner, Rat, Nightmare X-mas, and Elton John 60th come tomorrow from Amazon. Going to have some buddies over to watch them drool.

We played Grid and Top Spin Tennis on the PS3 in 1080P. Oh My God. And the Denon 1909 has made my Klipsch surround setup sound spectacular, I am now a very poor but very happy A/V enthusiast!

I think I'm going to go for Planet Earth to round out my initial buy and then cool it before my credit card blows up. I think the educational aspect combined with the spectacular cinematography is a must-have BD set for a family with kids.

Interesting point of view. You won't get too much response regarding this because it is off topic for this thread. I didn't want to just cut you guys off but I figured I would point you in the right direction. I would sugggest that you discuss a topic like this in Software or DVD Movie forums. I finally received Cloverfield on Tuesday from Amazon. Wow, that is the best demo I could play for anyone who doesn't believe in lossy vs. lossless sound. Incredible. I'm also thrilled that the video is a step up.

While I was on vacation last week I snagged a copy of Live Free Or Die Hard for $15.00 too.

Lossy sounds better.

I'm just getting into Blu-Ray and picked up a Sony BPH-S550 player last week. I've been blown away by some of the movies I've rented so far: New Indiana Jones, Stargate, 2001, and my latest surprise hit, "The INcredible Hulk"! I really only rented it to demo the DTS HD Master Audio format on my system. WOW, did this turn out to be a really good movie IMO. I thought my subber was gonna blow for sure during this flick!!!
Anyway, just wanted to chime in and thank everyone for their BR choices. I'm looking fwd to checking some of them out!

Greetings,

I picked up The Incredible Hulk and watched it over the weekend. Definitely reference quality. I will pick up HB II at some point as well. Right now I am pretty busy with coverage for the studios that I handle. Unfortunately Universal, who released both of these films has not been responsive to requests for review copies. If I begin posting reviews of their titles after purchasing them then there would be no need for them to ever consider adding us to their list for coverage of their releases.

Hopefully that will change soon.

Thanks.

Thanks for the list. I noticed you put Flyboys as recommended for both Audio and Video. I know you have not written a formal review, but would love your thoughts. I saw a demo at a local high end store, and saw about 5 minutes of a dogfight scene. I didn't know what movie it was, but had to ask the salesperson what movie was playing.

Any general thoughts on movie content, audio and video presentation? I might just blind buy this.

Ralph I have been reading your reviews for a long time and I love them. I think now is the time that you have to be tougher on soundtracks since they are all getting so darn good in HD.

I see that your LFE ratings are sort of high for movies that I feel should be at least 1 notch lower. For instance last night I watched the Lion, Witch and Wardrobe and to be honest the LFE for that movie was at best a 3 out of 5. Really only 2-3 scenes stood out to me and I, like you, have a PB-13 and mine is in a 1800cu ft theater. Movies like Cloverfield and WOTW should be our 5 star benchmarks. I doubt for instance Kung Fu Panda and the upcoming Prince Caspian can reach the levels of those movies.

The new HULK in my eyes wouldn't even get a 5 start LFE...I'd say a 4 because it was very good, but not JAW DROPPING besides just a couple scenes.

Just my 2 cents :D

Thanks for your input. I would have to agree that the Lion, The witch and the wardrobe wouldn't be in the LFE catagory of KFP or Prince Caspian. That was one of my eariler Blu-ray Disc reviews and I hadn't had the exposure to the number of discs that I have seen to this point.

I don't agree with your assessment of The inscredible Hulk but do agree that WOTW and Cloverfield are two of the best LFE experiences.

Not even the IH? I run a nice sub as well and IH is easily 4.5 or 5 for LFE IMO. The campus scene and ending battle are downright scary in the LFE department!

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned "Dark City". Incredible audio and a very good overall movie.

I second the motion for "Dark City". I watched it last night on my Kuro 111FD and the night scenes were simply incredible!

The audio rocks also.

Thanks Toe,
I'll look into Transformers this week; sounds like the right movie choice for the impact I'm seeking.
BTW, I actually thought the right BR movie choice would be the Planet Earth set, and I almost bought it online. However, another minute of "Planet Earth" searching on AVS shocked me with the fact that it's a 1080i product, not 1080p, and reportedly there's even some footage in SD! Up til now I presumed that Blu-ray automatically meant 1080p, but looks like I'll have to first read the fine print on every BR disc...live and learn, I guess.

Actually, if you can find the original release (the BCC British version narrated by David Attenborough vs the Discovery Channel US version) Which sold here about six months before the American version was released, it's 1080p and picture quality is stunning.

Adidino,
Inspired by your post, I went to a local store today to buy the BBC/Attenborough version of Planet Earth in Blu-Ray (4-disc set), but the fine print on the box said it's in 1080i, not 1080p. So, no go.
Do you actually own this Planet Earth blu-ray set in 1080p?

I don't know if recommending this movie really qualifies, as the picture is only slightly above average at best for a BluRay. But The Fountain is just such a GIANT leap in PQ over the standard DVD that i feel it's worth mentioning. Also it's just an amazing movie (once you wrap your head around it) with a gorgeous soundtrack.

Dr. No - simply incredible restoration of a classic James Bond film (first one actually); and the ladies look marvelous. :D

My first HD blu ray movie was Chronicles of Narnia: LWW because it is one of my top favorite movies. Prince Caspian is also a good one to start with. Great movies for the whole family.

I'm looking forward to the releases of Toy Stories, Beauty & the Beast, Ghostbusters, Sound of Music, Lawrence of Arabia, Indiana Jones I-III, Star Wars V-VI, and Star Trek films (original crew), just to name a few. Yea, I'll be waiting a long time...

Same here, mostly due to the timing of it's release with the purchase of my BD player. I would recommend it for high-ref material. My first viewings also included the beginning chapters of Phantom of the Opera for color ref (stage sets, costumes and make-up), and various "sampler" BDs.

Yeah, the new Mummy movie looks extremely good on Blu-ray. I would give it about a 9.5/10 for picture quality. Some of the action scenes were really good. If you rent or buy the movie pay close attention to the scene where they are up in the mountains during the action scene. It is truly a great action scene for Blu-ray.

In terms of video and audio quality, you have to demo/review Elton John's 6oth Birthday Bash at MSG. Its the best concert video I have ever seen. The "live" quality of it is stunning.

Why do you think the one at Amazon is 1080i? As far as I know, there are only 3 versions of this set: Discovery Channel 4-disc in 1080i w/ Sigourney Weaver, US BBC 4-disc in 1080p w/ David Attenborough, and UK BBC 5-disc in 1080p with Attenborough (actually, supposedly the 4 main discs are 1080p and the 5th disc is 1080i)

This is reported by highdefdigest.com and wikipedia, along with several review sites...

I cannot recommend "Nightmare Before Christmas" enough. That movie is downright jaw dropping and really shows what Blu-Ray is all about.

My family and I have seen that movie so many times over the years and we all thought we new it pretty well. That was before we popped the BR version in the other night...WOW...even my 8 year old boy kept saying "Look at that! Oh, did you see that?" The colors, textures, depth, and the sound....downright amazing. So far it's by FAR the best BR disc we have seen.

In early December, I examined a 4-disc BBC/Attenborough Planet Earth Blu-ray set on the shelf at Target, and it was listed on the box as 1080i.

You can order Planet Earth Blu-ray DVD from Amazon.co.uk for less than US. If you read the customer comments listed under that title, it gives explanations what part or parts are not 1080p. Remember that some of the footage was filmed with 720p the only format available at that time. [url]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Planet-Earth-Complete-BBC-Blu-ray/

Tony,
When I began my search for Planet Earth, I was looking to buy only the BBC/Attenborough version in 1080p...not knowing for certain that it even existed in 1080p.
If you're asking about the Planet Earth set I saw on the shelf at Target, then yes, it is was definitely marked on the box as the BBC version narrated by Attenborough in 1080i. I drove there specificially to buy the set, but left disappointed. Conversely, I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon the BBC/Attenborough 4-disc set in 1080p on the shelf at Wal-Mart.

I just recently found this great. Great info and appreciate those sharing.

One comment I want to make is in regard to the discussion of Planet Earth and if its 1080i or 1080p. IMO this is really over blown. If your TV correctly deinterlaces 1080i, then there should be no visible difference between deinterlaced 1080i and direct 1080p. I think if you shy away from a title simply because it's 1080i you're making a mistake. I do agree with comment that the BBC/Attenborough copy is better than the Weaver. To me that is a more important criterion.

The first title that I saw that blew me away was Blade Runner. The opening scenes of future Los Angeles are absolutely stunning!

So, if on the store shelf you see a BBC/Attenborough set in 1080P and next to it is the same thing in 1080i, and both sets are priced the same, which would you pick?

So, if on the store shelf you see a BBC/Attenborough set in 1080P and next to it is the same thing in 1080i, and both sets are priced the same, which would you pick?Obviously the 1080p because strictly from a source POV 1080p is better than 1080i. That doesn't change the fact that you likely couldn't tell the difference from two sources that were 1080i and 1080p (again...assuming the TV correctly deinterlaces). 1080p is the top of the line benchmark but there are other factors that come into play. In this case a 1080i source ends up being 1080p once deinterlaced and displayed on the screen. Most HD TVs today are very good at deinterlacing. Does the source matter if the end result of both are identical?

I'm simply saying there were comments that people would absolutely not purchase a 1080i source as if it were the plague and I think that is short sighted. If you find it in 1080p buy it. If not available but 1080i is available then buy it. That’s all I’m saying.

yeah, the blu-ray box says 1080i.
However that is only written on the back of the box because of the some extra programming in 1080i. All of the main features of the film is in 1080p.

Ralph,
How about including a list of blu-ray's NOT to buy because of sound/video quality. A movie we might already own on dvd but the quality is not good enough to upgrade to blu-ray.

Ralph, I have to go with mattr on this one. It is great to see lists of what potentially to get and as important, a list of blu ray titles not to get.

It is sad that some movies are "dumped" onto blu ray rather than doing a thoughtful transfer including audio and video clean up. At times DVDs appear to be the same as those poorly done blu ray and the DVDs are cheaper.

Also, just an idea - divide audio into two catagories

stereo and traditional 5.1
"HD audio" (all of types beyond traditional 5.1)

For some, 5.1 is all they will ever have and its a pity to not separate the two out. For others who have "ultimate" systems for audio, they might be swayed by the quality in that venue.

I have it on HD-DVD and it sounds fantastic and looks incredible. But the picture is grainier than 'Black Hawk Down', which could bother some people.

It is also quite possible that it won't look better on Blu (or could look better). I have 'King Kong' on HD-DVD and it looks great, but watching it the other day at a Best Buy in Blu Ray it was unwatchable. It wasn't the sharpness of the image or the vibrancy of the colors, it was the unbelievably fake looking CGI. For some reason it came across fine on HD-DVD but not on Blu Ray.

Granted I have come to this opinion based on watching only one scene at a big box retailer, but I have it in my queue so I can do a side by side comparison at home.

I wouldn't reccomend "the Mummy" for a good sound experience, as mentioned above. If you want good sound, try getting a copy of Akira on Blu Ray. (Dolby True HD 192khz). Blew me away yesterday when I watched it.

Pan's lab is pretty good too.

I figure if you're going to watch a movie, make it one that you enjoy as well. = )

Greetings,

Jim, while I agree the Mummy is not an especially great piece of cinema I disagree that its presentation isn't worth experiencing. Beside everyones tastes vary and it isn't for you or I to tell anyone what they should like or dislike.

True you are. I could have worded differently only to stress "I dont personaly prefer the Mummy". However, since I just received my new Energy speakers from UPS yesterday, perhaps another viewing would be in order. = P
(and for the record, the only one I didnt like was the 3rd Mummy, lol)

Here are some I recommend on blu-ray that I thought were pretty amazing. Death Race, Path Finder, 30 Days of night, and Beowulf.

Another vote for Cloverfield audio. Truly amazing sound/surround presence, both the bridge scene and the street battle stand out. Was cool seeing the blue "HD Audio" readout on my Denon light up.

I picked up Jet Li's Fearless and it blew me away. I watched the Director's cut and I thought the picture and sound was just amazing. The fight scene near the end when the girls are all pounding on the drums was very impressive. The scenes showing the chinese countryside were equally impressive, overall I thought it was a great blu-ray experience.

I'm shocked Max Payne didn't make it into the recommended Audio list. I have seen a majority of all the best rated Blu-Ray's and the gun fights in that movie were the best I have ever heard in regards to impact, immersion, and surround sound activity.

But you have to admit, it's all a bit overdone. The engineers have used the surround sound format like a toy. The whole movie is very tongue-in-cheek.:)
I think they were trying to make it feel like you were playing the computer game without having to worry about applying any input.

Hi,

I absolutely agree with your comment, this movie's audio soundtrack was done expertly by an excellent team of film mixers, with the close collaboration of the director of Max Payne, John Moore.

The Bass in this movie is unreal! Very low frequencies, and deep tight gun's
sounds. But listen to the music soundtrack with the digital synthesizer...
It is pure room shaking, and deep into your guts and soul...

My sound system is well dial in, with the subs properly balanced, and all In can say, like I did already a while back, it's that this movie is now one of my top reference soundtrack for Bass tightness and impact.

By the way, John Moore is the same director that also directed "Flight of the
Phoenix". Do you remember also the Bass impact of this movie, when the plane faced the sand storm, and finally crashed? :D
John Moore, if you listen to his commentaries, in particular in the two flics
here mentioned, is really a strong bass impact advocate, and also an innovative guy with cool ideas for his film mixer, about the lowest bass frequencies ever recorded in the history of movie making, if not the Lowest. And it shows in the final results.
You have to give the guy credits plus congatulate him to bring us such entertaining and deeply satisfying sound design into his movies.

"Max Payne" rocks with strong Bass and Impact, no doubt about it. :)

Ralph, I just got around to looking at your list of favorites and recommendations. I think it's a great PQ/AQ reference list as many before me have said. I find many of my guilty pleasures involve Michael Bay movies, Armageddon, Transformers and The Island. I recently picked up the UK/Australian Blu-ray version since it's not available in a U.S. version yet, something to do with copyright infringements or something like that, not sure. The Island Blu-ray looks great, nice saturated colors (a Bay trademark) and great sound although only in Dolby Digital 5.1. I'm sure I'll pick up the U.S. version if and when it appears.

I watched a movie called Tell No One last night. Thought the picture was superb (especially for a modest budget French film).
The movie is excellent as well. Went into it blind, and was very glad I did. Sometimes the less you know about a movie, the nicer surprise it is.

I want to buy x-men but still hesitate to buy all three movies. I saw the first movie and enjoy it very much, but haven’t not seen the second and the third movie.

Does anybody think it’s worth to buy all 3 x-men movies?

IMO all three X-men movies were worth it....the third gets a little preachy; however, great climactic battle scene! Rent them if you're not sure; however, if you liked the first, chances are you will enjoy the next two. #3 is not the let-down that Spiderman 3 was.

Thanks Robert. I also found out the length of the third movie is shorter than the 2nd movie. Although a longer movie doesn't necessary mean it's better.
