View Full Version : My first High-Def set... rookie questions...

Pioneer PDP-5010 coming next week...can't believe I finally talked wife into it (only took me three years...). It will be in a quite dark, awful, 1970's retro-style basement. (dark paneling, shag carpetting, little natural light)

Having a Cox cable tech come over to check signal strength, etc. What specific questions should I ask him...and are there things I can get him to do that will help the setup I'll have... any input will be appreciated.

Only thing I've purchased, other than the TV, is a "BrickWall" surge protector. Here is the link to the Company:
http://brickwall.thomasnet.com/item/standard-surge-protectors/eight-outlet-surge-protectors/pw8r15?&forward=1 What do you think?

Tonight I will order a few HDMI cables from MonoPrice. What should I get for cleaning the screen?

Thx for any & all ideas, folks...

Brian

You might want to ask this over in one of the HDTV "reception" forums as this has nothing to do with display calibration.:)

Well, part of the "installation" actually does have to do with the calibration, as I am hoping, he/she MAY be able to answer some questions...

And maybe, in the time it took you to type out your "quasi"-indictment of my mis-step of post placement, you could have helped by actually answering me.

I will re-direct to the "correct" area...sorry I offended you.

I don't have any comments on the brickwall stuff, don't really know about it.

For cleaning the screen, a nonabrasive cloth is fine, there is some mild screen cleaner out there too to help if you get smudges or stuff on the bezel or glass screen, etc.

As for "coax cable tech," I don't know if they're going to know much if anything at all about display calibration. But I'm not really sure what you mean here, if this is just like some regular Comcast-type guy, they won't know anything. If it's some kind of home theater/integration type guy they may know soomething. I'm not sure why you need to check signal strength unless there are problems with your signal that you already know about.

The coax line that is in the basement, from where it comes in thru the wall, looks like it might be a separate line from the one that is upstairs. We have never had a TV hooked up to that basement line. That's why I wanted to get it checked.

Thanks

Jeez, I guess one smiley isn't enough for you. The reply was intended to get you to an area where you would have a better chance for replies to your question.

I'm confused as hell, but at least we're using smilies.:)

Good luck with your new setup.:)

As for the Cox cable-guy, you need to know the cost of HD service and if the basement cable will support it (you want digital cable service with the HD add-ons). Analog cable sucks!

Your best picture will be when you connect a Blu-ray player to your new Pio display (see the Blu-Ray player Forum threads (especially the "sticky" ones). You also want to get a DVE HD Basics (Blu-ray) Calibration DVD (see Amazon.com), to get your set adjusted correctly.

PS -- A good surround sound system will help too.

Beowulf1 -- I'm throwing all this out because you didn't provide any supporting details on your setup.
