Some recorders' default settings are like that, my DMR-EH55 does that too and it is about 1 bar (or step) lower than the original source. As long as it is not way too low then I guess it's normal.

good thing I have closed caption......because of my severe hearing loss I have to rely on ear phones and closed caption....watching TV without the recorder on is ok but when I am using the recorder....not so good....thanks

Make sure your Channel > TV Sound is on Stereo, not SAP?

Also, some of my programs on DIGITAL channels have sucky sound, just the opposite of what you'd expect of the "miraculaous" digital TV era.

If you are perchance piping the signal into your recorder via rf connection, I've observed cases where the resulting audio is quieter. In my case, when I connected the recorder using standard video/audio cables, instead of rf, the audio was definitely stronger.

Furthermore, if you connect audio/video to your recorder in this way you can also "boost" the audio input to the recorder by using the outboard converter box's output volume control to compensate.

OP (oorah) - how do you have your input hooked up to your DVD recorder via RF input (coax) or line inputs?

Are you recording from an STB? If so you are probably controlling your volume via the STB (with the STB remote). If this is what you're doing, here's the solution. Set STB volume on (or near) max, and compensate by lowering the TV volume (with the TV remote). My recordings will never have adequate volume unless the STB volume is set near maximum.

Perhaps Mr. oorah has left the building for he has failed to answer the same question when I asked it in the post just previous to yours three days ago.
