The reason I ask this is because I wanted to upgrade my Dish network DVR to the one that can record two shows at once, but Dish only makes the "dual receivers" now. You can only lease up to a maximum of 4 DVR's and we are already at that limit. So they said I could buy my own.

I was looking to hit two birds with one stone. Im wondering if there are any DVD recorders out with a hard drive that allow you to use it as a DVR. Sorry if it's a dumb question. Thanks!

A DVDR can't record satellite signals directly, but it can record stuff from the DVR thru a line input in 480i. Everything it records or shows thru the tuner will be in 480 res, which can be upconverted but it'll still be coming from the DVDR's SD source.
