Hi,

I am in the market for a new DVD Recorder. My friend has a DVD Player that is a Philips 5990. I really like the USB feature for playing Videos through the USB port from a flash drive or external hard drive. Are there currently any DVD recorders that do this too?

Thanks,

Eric Gartin

I know the Phillips 3575/76 has a USB port for displaying pictures and selected vid file formats, so you should check out the thread for it at the top of the page. :)

That was the model (3576) I was going to go with. Although reading through the posts it appears it only plays WMV files. I was hoping to play divx through the USB. Sorry, if I didn't mention that in my first post.

Thanks,

Eric

I couldn't find a "5990" Philips so have to assume it's a unit for a country other than one in North America. Those units have many features our don't cuz there's no Hollywood influence there.

The 3575/76 doesn't play video files, even DivX, via USB. DivX is playable on CD-R/RW and DVD-R/Rw/+R/+RW.

Actually it was a Philips DVP5990/37, it is available in North America.

Thanks,

That might explain why it plays videos thru USB from ext HDD... it's not a recorder. When it comes to recorders, the N.A. versions are usually "crippled" so we can't directly record full-motion video stuff.

However, the mktg page on that unit suggests it only plays the usual music and pic files ???:

"USB Direct plays photos and music from USB flash drives

Simply plug your device into the USB port on your Philips DVD system. Your digital music and photos will be played directly from the device. Now you can share your favorite moments with family and friends."
