I'm curious if these need a junction box behind it or do they mount directly onto the wall?

You need a low voltage box behind them available at HD, Lowes, etc...

I've used both of the ones pictured there... I'm extremely happy with them. Easy to put in, too.

I have three waiting to be installed. Yes, you definatly need a LV box to mount it to.
