As an unabashed HT noob, I'd humbly ask for some suggestions on a subwoofer to suit the following system.

Yamaha RX-V463 5.1-Channel Receiver
Yamaha NS-IW480CWH 8" 3-Way In-Ceiling Speakers
Mitsubishi HC1500 Projector
Projector Ceiling mounted
Focupix HDVio 16:9 Widescreen High Contrast Grey Electric Screen - 92"
Harmony 890 Pro remote control

My budget is the under-$300 range. The other speakers are ceiling mounted and the room size is 14' by 16' with walls on three sides and an open attic above. The system will be used almost entirely for home theater presentations of DVDs. My wife and I are probably a little wimpy compared to most of you with respect to loud volumes. I typically set the AV Rec to -8db if that's any indication.

Depending on how long the subwoofer cable can be (how long is that anyways?), we have several possible installations sites. The most obvious position would be on the floor below the screen. There's a shelf there, 12" above the carpet, so that would be the maximum height for the subwoofer.

I don't really care much what it looks like as far as color, but a professional finish, even if geeky or eccentric, is desirable. It's also very important to me that the subwoofer doesn't need to be manually powered on / off when you use it. Everything else is turnkey via the Harmony Remote and I don't want to have to manually power up the subwoofer.

I need it like Yesterday because the rest of my gear has already arrived and the subwoofer is the last item pending. I'm returning a Yamaha FSW150BL subwoofer because some of the wizards here told it was "a toy." I respect knowledge and experience when I see it, so please take a minute to ponder up a perfect fit for my purpose.

Thanks in advance.

The BIC H-100 seems highly recommended around here.

+ 2, $15 over your budget is nothing for the difference in performance. IF YOU MUST stay below $300 then the H-100 is a great choice.

Total cubic inch volume of area? Base your choice on that and not on cost.

The BIC H-100 is so last year :D :D

Companies like eD, Tweak City Auto, AV123 and used SVS/HSUs subs have made the BIC H-100 not really an option.

Thanks to all of you for your quick and useful comments. I spent most of yesterday gathering info and opinions. The Tweak City Scamp 10 would be my first choice if they were actually shipping. Anyone know when they will be available for purchase?

Otherwise it comes down to three candidates: HSU STF-1, Bic H-100 and the eD A2-300. Of the three I'm liking the STF-1 for price alone. At $254 (for the silver case) it seems like a bargain.

The total volume of my room is only 1500 cubic feet, so I'm wondering these will be overkill for the space. Would the Dayton Audio SUB-100 be a more realistic choice?

You can probably get better information on shipping dates for the Scamp 10 from Craig Chase the owner of Tweak City Audio. Just search Tweak City Audio Forum (if you haven't registered for that Forum yet you should register), and ask about the latest projected shipping dates, pre-orders, final pricing and shipping charges, etc. There are people on that Forum who will be able to point you to the latest information about expected shipping dates, etc.

None of the subs you are considering will be "too much" for your relatively small room. You will just end up with some extra headroom which is considered highly desireable. You can also buy something that can dig a little deeper without breaking the bank.

~$50 over the life of the sub won't amount to much. Right now, the Ed A2-300 is a very good buy. I would be leaning that way.

The Ed A2-300 is in another class from the BIC and the Dayton. BIC is becoming less and less attractive with the Ed, Scamp 10.
