View Full Version : Suggestions for a sub
Wino Rhino 06-09-08, 01:59 PM Hello,
I am putting together a system for HT (primarily) and music. Following the guidelines here is my situation:
1. My budget is around to $1K.
2. I have no real size restrictions, but I would like to keep it just one sub for room aesthetics.
3. The room is 13X30X9. It opens in the back to the rest of house. Flooring is hardwood.
4. I am interested in making my sterum shake from an earthsplitting explosion of a Michael Bay movie only sometimes. In general I don't need that power.
5. I would like an attractive, non black cabinet--something with a light wood finish.
6. Finally i want to move forward with this as soon as possible. I really don't want to wait for something new to come out in the fall.
Thanks for your help.
sivadselim 06-09-08, 02:12 PM There are several choices in that price range, but since you would prefer a light wood finish, that narrows your choices considerably. Maple SVS PB-12+ is on clearance for $899, btw. Probably a good choice.

Someone mentioned in another thread that HSU would soon be offering wood veneers, too. You could look into an AV123 MFW-15, but who knows when you might be able to get your hands on one.
domingos1965 06-09-08, 02:18 PM u could go with 1 av123 MFW-15 for $599 + shipping it comes in a variety of nice finishes
if u decide that u want a plain black sub there will be a lot more subs to choose from within your budget

Noubourne 06-09-08, 02:38 PM Yeah so the black MFW's have a wait time on them. Good to know.
He would clearly be in the market for their Moho Satin finish, which is the light wood-colored veneer, and currently lists an estimated shipping date in the past (May 30). I thought someone recently posted pictures of this sub in the MFW-15 thread, and someone shortly after ordered 2 of them and got both within 2 weeks of ordering. I'm sure anyone could go to that thread to read about it if they were interested.
If he is interested in the MFW-15, he can quite easily call AV123 to see when he might get a Moho finish. Satin Black is where most of the long wait-time is, and I have yet to see any estimated delivery dates past July. July isn't exactly Fall...
I looked at all these subs when I was shopping and picked the Cherry MFW. Very happy with my decision. I waited less than 2 weeks for them to notify me about shipping on that one.
Wino Rhino 06-09-08, 03:51 PM Thanks for the information. It looks like the SVS PB12+ is only available in black. The AV123 looks to be a great sub.
IF i were to go with a black sub, what options does that open up?

Every <$1000 sub out there...;)
Jakeman02 06-09-08, 04:23 PM Maybe not EVERY with the #5 I want it ASAP specification.
Does open things up though. Outlaw LFM-1 EX, HSU VTF3 MK3, SVS PB12+, MFW 15 depending on color availability now. Epik and ED also have good choices but you'd need to contact them on wait times.
Personally at the clearance price I'd go for the SVS PB-12+ or the +/2 which is not much over budget.

I told you (and showed you) that the Maple one is on clearance for less than the textured black one. Didn't you say you wanted a light wood finish? That's real wood veneer.

Wino Rhino 06-09-08, 07:51 PM My mistake. I was looking at the PB plus/2 and not the one you indicated.
Thanks.
Wino Rhino 06-09-08, 08:09 PM Oh, and that's what I just bought. $998 shipped. Perfect for what I need.

$99 shipping? Ouch!
mojomike 06-09-08, 08:59 PM That's an excellent choice. $99 to ship a 140lb sub is a bargain. I suspect that the cost is partially subsidized by SVS.

Or considered by SVS while pricing the subwoofer ;).
Regardless, a Plus/2 for under $1000 is a great deal. I think the OP will be quite pleased with its performance :D.
The OP got the +, not the +/2. It's a mere 110 lbs.:)
