After a longer absence from AVS, I do come back to this nice hobby. I considered to up-grade my good old Philips PM5639 that I have with the plain single sensor head.

I noticed that after Philips sold the devision to PTV, it was further sold off to DK Technologies and that some years ago, a new head was developed with a small tube shaped sensor for making direct readings from tricky displays, such with limited viewing angles, as LCD front displays e.g.

Up-Grade costs are :
==========================
- new Eprom = 250 Euro
- new head/kit = ca. 5000 Euro

questions :
========================================================
- How good is the old head still perceived for reflective measurements ?
- Anybody using the new tube-shaped sensor ? Differences ?
- Would it be wiser to invest in an Eye One Pro ?
- Alternatives ?

Thx.

Greetings

The old PM5639 device is only good for CRT and plasma type TV sets and nothing else.

Eye 1 pro works on all technologies well.

Both are useful. The PM5639 will track well down to 0.03 fL and the EyeOne will be more accurate.

I have both the original hand-held Philips meter and the EyeOne Pro with Colorfacts Professional. The EyeOne has proven to be stable much longer. I no longer use the Philips. It costs more to have re-calibrated, must be done more frequently, is less versatile (rarely do CRT), and doesn't print reports (I didn't invest in the computer interface). The low level reading capability is no longer such an issue since I have an adjustable 10-step optical comparator.

OK Guys, thanks for the input.

Summarizing : the old single head is still OK, but for CRT and Plasma only.

Is really nobody using that new sophisticated tube-shaped sensor head ?

The new head, as said is roughly 7000 to 8000 dollars (5000 Euro)......
