Hi,
I just bought a new Samsung HL61A750A and while I'm having quite a few problems with it (trying to figure out if it is defective), I figure I might as well ask about calibrating - I'm not planning on buying a bluray player at least until Xmas and probably not until next year, so does the non HD DVE disc provide any value for me? I'll be using my upconvert DVD player to calibrate.

That's what I used to cal my new Toshiba 37" and the picture is much better than when I got it out of the box. When I did the original cal using Blue as DVE does by default I didn't like the color. I ended up doing it again using the Red calibration method and it came out better.

Yes certainly standard NTSC DVD is available. Avia II is also standard DVD, which I also highly recommend.
