What is wrong with iTunes? Aren't you already using that?
And if you always want your audio files on your HD, in the future that is where you should put them to begin with. You can easily load them onto your iPod from there.

I understand the not being able to get iTunes to do what you want scenario. I've run into the situations where you have your iPod set to sync with one computer and its iTunes configuration...when you switch computers, a hard drive dies, or you re-install windows, etc, you sort of lose that link of the one computer/iTunes configuration that your iPod syncs with...having a third-party app that lets you control the content really helps sometimes!
One program that I use to get files OFF of my iPod back on to my computer is SharePod.
http://www.getsharepod.com/
It has a bunch of other features as well and can be used as an iTunes alternative (in terms of content management on your iPod). There are other programs out there, but I don't remember them all...I've found that SharePod does what I need that iTunes can't do. Oh yeah...I almost forgot...it's free too! <I believe it is Windows only, I am assuming you aren't trying to connect it with a Mac OS...if so, I am sure there are other programs out there, I just don't know them.>
Hope that helps!

You dont need any software.....you can just rip CDs then re-copy them to your PC as MP3s or WMA.
If I have Ipod songs I want to play through WMP.
I select all the songs I want in Itunes then rip them to a CD using Itunes. Then take the CD out of the drive and put it back in....Itunes will then ask you if you want to copy the CD back into Itunes...it will keep the song titles, artist, etc and rip them to WMA files with NO DRM. :D Yes, Itunes will have duplicate copies of the song, just delete the Itunes copy then.
Everything I buy I make sure I do this procedure so I can use MY music anywhere.
you can then play those files anywhere.
