I just picked up an i1 LT and was wondering what the suggested manner of calibrating the sensor is. I'm currently using the method suggested in the 'Grayscale Calibration for Dummies' by putting the sensor against the black inside of a DVD case (in my dark room). Will this work? Any other simple or cheap solutions?
I'm using the HCFR software for what it's worth.

The meter just needs to be placed on a flat opaque surface (preferably a black surface).

I'm using the same method that Greyscale and Color Calibration for Dummies as well and it's worked pretty well
From my experience, x-rite Display 2/LT requires no calibration, you just initialize the meter and off you go. Further more, whether you initialize on a dark surface or not makes no difference, the meter returns the same readings regardless.
Having said that I still initialize my meter on a black surface. :D
Placing the sensor on a flat/opaque surface doesn't really 'calibrate' it other than set the black level correctly. I do what the others above have stated since well, that's what I wrote in my guide. ;)

Have you ever tried not to use a black surface? I have and I got no difference in reported readings at all, ragardless if it was the black level reading or further up the gray scale. ;)
Now, if that was because the non-black initialization or reset didn't take, I don't know and haven't investigated.

The main reason to place the Display2 on a dark surface is to make sure it does not see any refresh lighting and mistake it for CRT. The Display2 and Chroma5 do not need a dark calibration offset like the i1Pro and DTP94 do.
Thanks for explaining that Derek.
