Please excuse me if I am rehashing an old question but I just want to try and get this right. I am having a house built (not custom) that has a dedicated media room 15' x 18' 8" with a riser that I think is either 6" or 8" tall. I decided to go for the best bang for my buck and purchased a Mits 73" Diamond series DLP at a great price. I will need to buy a piece of furniture to put the DLP on so I have to figure out how tall of one to buy or make.

From what I read it seems to be the consensus to have the middle of the screen at eye level for the riser row of seats. This would make the front row look up slightly at the screen. Is there anyone who has run into this situation who has some good feedback? How high above eye level can you place a DLP without affecting good PQ?

Thanks in advance and sorry if I brought up old questions.

You should go with a DLP projector if you are going to have staggered seating, otherwise you'll never have a perfect seating height. Usually though maybe an inch, two tops and you can still retain pretty high quality. I have the same TV, but had a projector before. I you want a dedicated home theater room I suggest a projector and a good screen. Shoudl cost about the same if not less.

I think you should have your preferred seats (where you sit the most) at optium viewing angle. (0* from the center of the tv). I believe the angle is 15-20* from center to still have the pq near what it will be at eye level.
My 50" dlp is set up approx 7 ft from the tv. If I am standing behind the seating, the picture still looks great at about 9 ft away. If I stand in front of my seat, then I am at too high of an angle to get the best quality. THe brightness goes down and the coloring looks a little washed out. You can try running a string from your back wall to the center of the tv at 15-20 degrees and that should give you an idea of whether the seats will be at the right viewing angle.
Hope that makes sense.

That does make sense and I surely will try that once the house is finished and the room is ready to go, thanks slapshot11.

Nicktx27 thanks for the reply. At first I was thinking about a projector and screen and then was talked out of it. I was asked if this will be an everyday viewing room and my answer was yes. What I understood at the time was a projector is great for movies in a dark room but if light comes in then the pq goes down and even in a dark room the pq of a projector will not match a plasma, lcd or dlp one for one. Maybe I miss spoke when I said "dedicated ", what I meant was that this is an actual enclosed media room but I will be using it as an everday viewing room for everything from news, sports, tv shows and movies. Now I am fairly new to all this so I could be way off the mark about the projector. Sounds like the best way is a tv and a projector so one would have the best of both worlds.

Thanks:)

I have a 71 inch LCos and the main lounge is EXACTLY 3 M in front of the TV and when I sit on the lounge my eye level is exactly in the middle of the height of the tv. I did this by shortening the cabinet one row the full length of the cabinet. The middle of the main lounge is exactly the middle of the TV
The Chairs either side of the main lounge are exactly the same angle to the TV left and right and same height as the main lounge ( just say I am exactly fussy.)

No problem. I didn't realize it would be an everyday TV. If thats the case then yeah projector would not be the best choice. have you thought about plasma or LCD. I know it's more expensive but you wouldn't have to worry about viewing angles. Just a thought.

For now the cost of a very big plasma or Lcd does not fit into the budget for the media room. I also have to buy my receiver and PS3 along with several more tv's for the game room, living room and a small one for the bath area. I also just bought a Panasonic 42" pz85u plasma for the master bedroom. For the game room I want somewhere between a 46" and 50" plasma or Lcd and a 19" one for the bar itself. The receiver I am looking at for the media room is either the Onkyo 875 or 905 depending on funds. The nice thing is that I have at least 4 mths before the house is done so I am saving and watching the sales.:)
