Hello, I am new to the multi-channel world. I am trying to figure out if my DVD47 (or a new DVD48) from Harman Kardon will output a digital signal in the DTS 96/24 format. A Pioneer model DV-588A my father has (which mysteriously decided it will not turn on anymore) was believed to put out the correct signal to his receiver.
I am unsure of the H/K beacause of a phrase on page 22 of the DVD47 owner's manual, "Note: Due to copyright restrictions, this unit will not output an uncompressed signal in the PCM format from a disc recorded with a 96kHz/24bit resolution, such as some DTS audio CDs. If the Digital Output setting is set to PCM, and the PCM limit is set to 96kHz, no audio will be outputted."
Any insight from you knowledgeable members would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Randall.

Any reason you wouldn't bitstream a DTS 96/24 track to your receiver for decoding, which would make this a non-issue for the player?

What BIslander said. Don't set it to PCM.

What do you mean by "bit-streaming it"? I am a newb.
Regardless, I got my hands on Chrome Dreams by Neil Young in 96/24. Without screwing around, my receiver shows that a 96Khz signal is coming in although I am unsure of the 24 bits. However, the sound is exceptionally better that regular cds played on my system.

What do you mean by "bit-streaming it"? I am a newb.Bitstream means sending an encoded track to a receiver for decoding back into PCM. Examples of encoded tracks include DD, DTS, and TrueHD. All digital audio is PCM. Encoding into formats such as DD and DTS is done to save space. Encoded tracks have to be decoded back into PCM in order to be played. The OP is concerned that his player will not properly decode DTS 96/24 tracks. I asked why he doesn't bitstream them to his receiver instead, where the decoding will be done correctly.

Yes, the sound is excellent, although it is far from my favorite Neil Young music.

Thanks BIlslander. So if I dumb it down a bit in order to fully understand... Bit-streaming is just sending the digital signal from my DVD47 through an optical cable (or coax) into the AVR240 to be "massaged" into beautiful music.
Any examples of an encoded 96/24 disc (not already PCM) out there I can test in my set-up?
**not my fave NY album either..

Bitstream is like sending a zip file which has to be unzipped by the receiver before it can be played.
Any examples of an encoded 96/24 disc (not already PCM) out there I can test in my set-up?There aren't all that many DTS 96/24 releases. Monster Music put out a few discs a couple of years ago. I have one called "40 years - A Charlie Brown Christmas".
I'm curious, though. If you don't know about any 96/24 discs, why is this an issue for you?
