Hi all,

For the past several days, i have been reading lots and lots of build threads. I'm a virgin noob at this and this is my first time attempt building a HT/Media room using my unfinished basement.

Things i have learned so far in term of sound insulation:

+ Fiberglass is the cheapest yet works awsome
+ DD with GG
+ Double studs / staggered studs for interior wall
+ Bracket for spot lights (further sound proof)
+ Solid core doors with weather stripping
+ Resilient clips with hat bar for drywall
+ DC04 clips for connecting studs to the ceiling.
+ Flexible duct.

So i plan to do all that in the project. I will use the entire basement.

I'm located in canada, can someone in canada tell me where can i get the DC04 clips, the hat bar with RCIS-Vclip, Green Glue and the flexible duct?

Home depot doesnt carry them. To my surprise they dont know much of what i'm looking for.

In addition, how do i insulate the floor? I read about floating floor but i dont understand :o . Should i use hardwood floor for the HT/media area? I think the bass would sound better but then it would transmit lots of sound right?

Thanks in advance

Hi MameXP an congrats on the new room project. I was obsessed with this part of the project myself when building my room not knowing anything about it at the time.

First its real easy to get carried away with this, be carefull it gets real expensive, real fast. I also did most of what you list above and although I'm sure some will disagree, I think most of it was worthless.

I would drop the double studding, clips and floating floor as not worth it. Instead just stuff the sh!t out of the walls with insallation and double sheetrock. The flex duct definitely works to reduce sound thru the vents so I would also suggest that too.

As for the floor, I would also say dont worry about the floating floor unless your worried about the sound traveling thru your concrete floor & dirt and disturbing sub-terrain creatures. ;)

My HT room is also in the basement. Inside the risers I built for the second row, I stuffed this with insulation and had the entire room carpeted. This was enough for the floor.

I remember being shocked at how much insulation I used. I didnt expect to spend thousands on it so be carefull it adds up fast.

My results, well its not completly sound proofed but does the job of reducing it enough that I'm not disturbing the rooms above (unless I really crank up the volume (which I usually do being half deaf anyway:))).

The only sound that really gets thru is the sub. And this is one that simply is hard to eliminated since its more of a rattling/vibration of the floors, studs & walls that causes it to get thru.

The double sheetrocking I think helps the most and is priority. I only double sheetrocked the one wall and can tell the difference when standing on the other side of it compared to the other walls.

Hi TomsHT,

Can you elaborate on double sheetrocking? I dont think i have heard that term.

Thanks for your comments.

Double sheet rocking is simply two layers of sheet rock instead of one.

Yes the carpet & padding was right on top of the concrete floor
