View Full Version : HL-72A650 vs HL-67A750...HELP PLEASE!!!
Thinkn_Big 06-14-08, 05:29 AM so ive registered just to receive some help w/ this decision
ive read a lot on this forum and thank you to everyone who chimed in on previous 650/750 posts, however, there was nothing concrete said about the 72A650...
so i've been pretty much all over the internet past few days trying to decide between these 2 sets...prices are pretty much similar so thats not an issue
im just looking for some1 to help sway my decision here, cuz i cant make up my mind
the 67", checked it out at CC and loved it...brightness, clarity, beautiful picture
saw a 56A650 at BB and it was clean, but the settings made everythign look a lil dark, however not too bad
problem is i cant get over having a 72" DLP...the Mitsu 73734 was pretty much right next to the 67A750 at CC and it made it look small...the 73" was a beast...
i guess what i need is a testimonial from a 72A650 owner.....
AH!! its 2:30 AM and i cant sleep
hopefully Dreamn_Big too
thanks guys
I looked at the 72" vs the 67". No doubt you can tell a difference between the two sizes. My buddy had his 61" dlp and has not changed the bulb in 4 years. The wattage according to the site is pretty much the same, yet the 67" is labeled green. I am sure the quality is great but yet everyone is a fanboy of the new 73" mitsubishi but for the price of it you can grab this tv and a projector. 72" for size but 67" if you are looking for a longterm investment because it will not gradually get less bright with time like other dlps.
Quentin2 06-18-08, 02:06 PM Well as you know the 67" has these advantages: LED light source that lasts the life of the set, instant startup times, one tuner PIP and slightly less energy consumption.
Disadvantages may be brightness, 67" is the limit at this time for LED. Viewing angle may be slightly less in the LEDs too. And if you're really "Thinkn_Big" the lamp based 72" has a huge advantage. As does the Mitsubushi.
It's a hard choice but you should be happy with either LED or lamp. I have a smaller HL56A650 and love it. I couldn't fit a 61" in my room or budget so had to go with the bulb. It's gorgeous and I have no regrets. If I had the room I'd go with the 72".
Both of these sets have the 3d technology that looks pretty cool. Here are my thoughts on both of them.
67" Samsung: I can get for $1900 shipped. Green technology, cheap to run and saves on electric bill. LED technology I never have to worry about changing a bulb. 3d technology for the future can see in 3d with glasses. Cinema smooth and 120hz. Can watch in light or dark. Uncanny sharpness maybe when compared to a projector, not tested but do not know where to test. Worrys are coming from a projector it might not be big enough. Not easily replaceable if I want to upgrade. Then have to spend another couple hundered on a stand.
72" Samsung: Huge, almost the same price at $2200 as the 67". Proven technology with regular DLP. 3D ready as mentioned above. Issues with changing bulbs. Is it really worth the 5" maybe? When I seen a 73" compared to a 67" I could tell the difference like mama bear to papa bear. Brightness slowly dims. Little wider more on electric bill. Still might not compare to 102" projected screen.
The 72" uses a higher wattage bulb than the other lamp based DLPs so the average bulb life should be about 4,000 hours. Alo electricity costs for this set would be at least 50% more. The 72" also has a color wheel (another mechinical part) plus a ballast. I would also guess the 72" unit has more cooling fans. Because of the way the LED sets work the chances of seeing rainbows is virtually eliminated.
Quentin2 06-21-08, 08:48 PM ...The 72" ... electricity costs for this set would be at least 50% more...
That's about right, maybe 40% more. Crutchfield has measured power consumption of the 67" and 72" and estimates monthly cost of $3.86 for the 72" and $2.77 for the 67" if they're used 6 hours a day at 10 cents per KWH. Really not that much difference but the LED definitely is "greener".
Quentin2 06-22-08, 03:37 PM Oops, this was left unsaid in my post immediately above:
To be fair when comparing power consumption - the 72" is 5 more inches, is that worth $1 a month in electricity?
techdummy 06-22-08, 06:58 PM When I saw both models side by side the 650 did seem to have a slightly better picture. I don't know why but it did. If you're getting an extended warranty the bulb thing shouldn't matter anyway. I don't know much about the technical things that are different in each tv. I know the LED doesn't have the color wheel. Thats a plus I believe.

Keep in mind that the 5" translates to almost 300 square inches of extra screen real estate. That's more than 15% screen area, which is significant.
I am currently considering the Sam 72 vs Mits 73 as upgrades to a 65". Either will definitely be worth it in my mind.
Quentin2 06-23-08, 01:22 AM Yeah I should have worded that better NDR, I meant the 72" IS worth it to me! The extra power cost isn't significant to me.
72" FTW. DLP bulbs you do not replace that often.
So what did you get ? I am interested to know?
If I were getting a 72 incher, I would personally get a Mitsubishi which have the Darkchip 4 with improved grayscale. I got a Samsung, because I wanted LED.
