View Full Version : Best Option for an Apartment: First Crack at H/T

Just wanted an opinion on a decision I'm real close to making. I have two current options for a speaker set-up in an apartment. Just want to know if one option is going to be significantly better than the other. The TV in question is a Samsung PN50A550 Plasma.

1) Sony STR-DA3300ES going to Infinity TSS-4000 speaker system.

Cost: $1900.00

2) Yamaha YSP-3000 center projector being fed from the T.V.

Cost: $650.00

Now, this is going to be my first real plunge into Home Theatre, and it is going to an apartment, so my question is this, is the first set-up overkill for an apartment, and will a center projector faux-surround supply plenty of sound if fed directly from the T.V.? My only gripe with it is that I feel I won't have the same level of control I will if I have the full A/V Reciever and 5.1 setup (especially knowing that there will be a blu-ray player, an X-box, Wii, and HD Dish going into it), but it is a much much cheaper solution, especially for a space that may not need the power and dynamics of what the first setup provides. Or is there an in-between alternative I could look at? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Yes. Since this seems to be for a living room or bedroom and not a home theater, I would opt for something in the middle.

You could go for something like THIS (http://www.bestbuy.com/site//olspage.jsp?id=pcmprd88900050000&skuId=999988800050000&type=product), or if you want a better receiver, just get those Klipsch (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7372513&type=product&id=1122654018549) speakers for $500, add the Subwoofer (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7039536&type=product&id=1099395911231) for $400 and an Onkyo 606 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0015S8PGW/interactiveda8749-20) for $450. For around $1300, it'd be a great bang for your buck system.

Would the Quintet SL's be a better deal than the Quintet III's? I read that Best Buy occasionally ran a deal for the SL's +Sub for 640.00, but it doesn't look like that's the case anymore. Also, is there another sub I can look at that isn't 400 bucks that would match this system?

as a bby employee, i can tell you theres usually a package with the III's with a yamaha receiver and sub for under 1000. I'm only the underpaid door monkey so I don't keep current on the ads, but thats something I have seen frequently in the past

I'm not familiar with the SL's, so can't comment.

There's probably a bunch of sub options. Check out the subwoofer forum to get a bunch of ideas.

I'm not a bb employee, but that deal was mentioned in the second post of this thread.
