I am trying to connect my laptop to my Yamaha V793 amplifier through the s-video input. I've connected the same laptop and cable to a tv and it works fine. When I put the cord into either of the inputs on the amp, no signal goes to the tv. The sound works fine though.

You have an svideo out from the AVR to the display I take it?
Do you have any other sources to try on it?
Not many people at all using svideo these days, I still rely on it heavily, but most others have no use for it anymore.

There is an s-video out on the amp but no input on the TV so I would like to have s-video going into the amp and an auxillary cable going out.

With that AVR I am pretty sure svideo needs to stay on svideo.
Monitor outs on AVR rarely work as expected. But you shoudl have just a plain svideo out no? This needs an svideo cable going from it to the display.
Pretty sure.

There is an s-video out on the amp, just no in on the tv. The TV only has spots for composite cables.

Once again, I don't understand...
The yellow is not svideo. Are you saying if you take the yellow composite from the source to one of the composite inputs on the AVR, and you run composite output to the display, then you get no video?
I think the svideo threw me. Your not using svideo?
