View Full Version : Any Be Kind Rewind review yet? Drandonuts 06-16-08, 08:34 PM I haven't seen any on the net. Has anyone been able to find one? Wolfie 06-17-08, 10:41 AM I'm getting it tomorrow from Netflix. Will try to put my two cents worth in soon. Wolfie Patsfan123 06-17-08, 10:52 AM It should be in the mail.. Which will come in the next hour or so. Patsfan123 06-17-08, 11:33 AM So the mail came. Popped it into the PS3, it shows up in the XMB with the pic and name. Then before the menu we get a nice Truth anti-smoking ad in DTS-HD MA 5.1, but no trailers. K so main feature: typical 7.1 DTS-HD MA with VC-1 encode. The sound WAS NOT mixed by MiCasa, but Chace Audio according to the NL BD credits. EFilm did the video. Its only on a BD-25 and I saw the bit rates hovering around 12 in some scenes, 15 in others and 20 in others. There is a soft look to the film with a kind of brownish haze over the film, this is not razor sharp HD. There is definately some kind of filter applied, but IDK if its DNR yet. I don't think its the fault of the bitrates though since the higher bitrate scenes look the same as the lower ones. I haven't seen the movie yet so I don't wanna scan too far into it. I will post some screen caps and the disc stats later. Also the popup menu is really, really slow on my PS3. It takes about 6 seconds for it to be useable as it fades in from when I hit the popup menu button. Only audio option is 7.1 DTS-HD MA. Only subs are English SDH and Spanish. There doesn't seem to be commentary and all of the extras I tried were in SD. Edit: The NL logo and main feature's core audio is DTS ES 6.1. I don't know if this is a new thing or not because I have no other NL discs to test. Movie: 8.5/10 I was a big fan of this in theaters, so if you like movies, or make movies with your friends, this is a really cool movie to watch. PQ: 7.5-8/10 Better than I remember in theaters. The color palette is subdued, and there seems to be a nice, subtle grain throughout. A bit of a haze to it, but I remember it in the theater. Detail is great. AQ: 8/10 Standard comedy AQ. Can't really fault it for that. Special Features: 8.5/10 I was surprised at the amount of features, considering the SD only had the Passaic Mosaic featurette and the trailer. There's about an hour's worth of stuff that isn't on the DVD, so I was pretty impressed. Here's a list of the features and their running times: Blu-ray exclusive: Booker T & the Michel Gondry: 6min 41sec Jack & Mos Improvise Songs: 4min 58sec A Conversation with Jack Black and Michael Gondry: 6min 3sec Fats was Born "Here": 11min 28sec The Making of Be Kind Rewind: 33min 20sec A Tribute to Fats Waller: 6min 6sec On Blu-ray and DVD: Passaic Mosaic: 10min 22sec Trailer: 2min 30sec Anyway, I'm really impressed with the Blu-ray. Malcolm_B 06-17-08, 11:52 AM I enjoyed this movie a lot and didn't realize it was out on Blu. Thanks. Time to look for this one. Patsfan123 06-17-08, 03:21 PM So I watched the movie. I thought it was cute, and I am in LOVE with Melonie Diaz now. I'd say the image is pleasing overall, no grain really and some nice enough detail. The DTS core sounded fine, and at points there was some good ambiance. I would call this a good rental because I don't know if I would watch it again. http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/12137261976e1161.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/6e11612260280) http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/1213726198d69ce3.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/d69ce32260281) http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/1213726199590b80.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/590b802260282) http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/12137262004ce59f.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/4ce59f2260283) http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/1213726200c56ec1.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/c56ec12260284) http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/1213726201b94c1d.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/b94c1d2260285) http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/1213726202ade4ea.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/ade4ea2260286) http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/121372620399ff6d.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/99ff6d2260287) http://thumbnails.keepmyfile.com/46/1213726203814413.gif (http://www.keepmyfile.com/image/8144132260288) shadowrage 06-17-08, 05:44 PM http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=997#more-997 4.5/4 PQ/AQ Rusty James 06-17-08, 06:57 PM So I watched the movie. I thought it was cute, and I am in LOVE with Melonie Diaz now. Me too, on both counts. Check out RAISING VICTOR VARGAS, which is available on DVD (but will never be on Blu-ray, alas). It is a fantastic movie, and it was also her first film. After it came out, I used to see her walking around the East Village all the time (that's where Vargas was shot) but never said hi to her. Patsfan123 06-17-08, 07:02 PM After it came out, I used to see her walking around the East Village all the time (that's where Vargas was shot) but never said hi to her. WIMP! jk, I get shy when talking to regular girls. :( lgans316 06-17-08, 09:58 PM Quite disappointing to hear that the movie has been presented on BD-25. At least NL doesn't disappoint as they have consistently featured lossless audio. Stealth87 06-17-08, 10:39 PM The HDDN review says it's a 50GB disc. Can someone confirm or deny this? lgans316 06-17-08, 10:49 PM The HDDN review says it's a 50GB disc. Hairspray - 13.99 Mbps Rush Hour 3 - 15.86 Mbps Pan's Labyrinth - 15.76 Mbps zoro 06-20-08, 01:19 AM Video on my 1080i TV looks excellent, natural colors, 3D, simply very pleasing to my eyes! I do not mind grain! zoro 06-20-08, 01:21 AM http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=997#more-997 4.5/4 PQ/AQ Video Quality on this release is 1080p in VC-1 on a BD-50 (50 gigabyte Dual-Layered Blu-ray Disc). This boasts a really nice color palette and flesh tones as well as a solid black level. There’s no signs of any film grain or any filters like DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) or EE (Edge Enhancement) being used here. You just get a clear crisp 35mm to High Definition transfer with the exception of the scenes that were obviously shot on a VHS camcorder (as you see in the film). These scenes look just as you expect (the VHS tapes of their films they remake), like a VHS tape would if you watch a DVD of it upconverted. There’s no reason to knock this overall video quality rating for that in the presentation as it’s part of the theme to the film and totally sets it’s visual vibe perfectly. There’s no compression issues either to speak of here. This seems to be all around very solid and worthy of a “4 1/2 Star Rating” for video quality. I could nt agree more, best looking video, just simply pleasing of its genre. Tom Monahan 06-21-08, 03:17 PM Soft and a bit washed out on my 45"x108" scope screen. I thought the movie was still enjoyable though. joerod 06-21-08, 03:20 PM Watching it soon... Just came... :) Hughmc 06-22-08, 04:03 AM http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=997#more-997 4.5/4 PQ/AQ That review is dead on accurate. The reviewer nailed it. WHat he said is exactly what I saw and heard tonight. Hairspray - 13.99 Mbps Rush Hour 3 - 15.86 Mbps Pan's Labyrinth - 15.76 Mbps Surprising since it looks very similar in PQ to the Bucket List. Corellianrogue 06-22-08, 10:06 PM I haven't seen this yet but the concept is a blatent rip-off of the Blockblister Video sketches from The Amanda Show, lol! "No, is better!" :D hobbs47 06-22-08, 10:13 PM This is a not a very funny movie at all. As far as Jack Black movies go,Nacho Libre was funnier, that tells you how bad this one is. Mos Def's voice is very "grating" as well. FHSASBVP 06-22-08, 10:28 PM After getting pumped up from watching the preview, I was very disappointed in the actual film when it ended. From the preview I thought the film would be witty and clever, however there were several slapstick moments that ruined it for me. If you've watched the preview then this is not a spoiler, but jack black's character gets magnatized...let's just say this idea spills over into a urine stream of his. It was silly. I cringed. The movie also ended quite abrubtly. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, films that don't just give away their ending are brilliant...but sometimes, and in the case of this movie, I'm left feeling that the film makers simple short changed me. I'll be interested in hearing others' comments regarding what i've stated. Corellianrogue 06-22-08, 11:08 PM Looks like I'm not the only one who noticed the above mentioned similarities: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5geC6TcKM7U shadowrage 06-23-08, 01:42 AM This is a not a very funny movie at all. As far as Jack Black movies go,Nacho Libre was funnier, that tells you how bad this one is. Mos Def's voice is very "grating" as well. Well if you can actually call Nacho Libre a comedy and keep a straight face, then Be Kind Rewind is definitely not for you.;) Be Kind isn't a Jack Black movie at all. It's a Michel Gondry movie, and it has his prints all over it. It's fantastic. If you love films for being films, you will love Be Kind Rewind. The bits where they shoot their movies, and even the electricity bit are hilarious. leem6453 06-23-08, 06:30 AM I didn't really like it. It had a few funny moments, but overall it kinda fell flat for me...and I did think Nacho Libre was a comedy, and a really funny one. anim8r 06-23-08, 10:17 AM uhhhhh.... i have to say that i, too, am quite disappointed with this one. i was looking forward to this from the moment i saw the trailer. "Genius!" - i thought. well, from the first 5 minutes i knew something was wrong. the movie ultimately falls flat on the ground. the dialogue is sometimes very... off. some comments on imdb (i know, i know) have even questioned if they had a script or if it was improvised. the performances are half-assed. lazy, even. black does a good job, but he could have done a lot better with a better script, i believe. the trailer makes it out to be a great, funny movie about people who are forced to recreate the tapes of their video store after Black erases all them with his magnetization. the parodies only take up about 10 minutes of the film. the rest is a mish-mash of 3 or 4 other side-stories that could have made good films, had the ideas been fully realized, but by the end, i was just left with an empty feeling of what could have been. i am quite sad. i had such high hopes for this film. and i love 'eternal sunshine' and movies like 'being john malkovich' and 'adaptation' and 'schizopolis', so i was the perfect target for this movie, seeing as how i love movies, and especially movies about movies. but it just doesn't work. see it for yourself, as everyone will take away something different from every movie. but i would rent it, not buy it, like i did. this and 'southland tales' were the biggest disappointments of the year... are there no good original films left out there??? (oh, on the bright side, the disc looks and sounds great. haven't gone through all the extras yet, but the one of black and def "sweding" the other film theme songs is great!) akbled 06-28-08, 04:05 PM It wasn't the funniest movie ever but worth the price of a rental just to see the Ghostbusters swede. I was in tears and haven't laughed that hard in a movie probably ever. maingon 06-28-08, 10:51 PM It wasn't the funniest movie ever but worth the price of a rental just to see the Ghostbusters swede.
