View Full Version : Universal to release three Judd Apatow films on September 30
JBlacklow 06-17-08, 10:56 AM The word has started to hit distributors that September 30 will see the release of three of Judd Apatow's comedies by Universal. "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "Knocked Up," and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" will come separately and in a "Judd Apatow 3-Pack".
MSRP should be $39.98 for day-and-date "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", $29.98 for the other two, and $89.98 for the box set.
adiddy2231 06-17-08, 11:04 AM Forgetting Sarah Marshall was very good minus all the manhood shots
pghflyer 06-17-08, 11:11 AM I hope they actually include all the Knocked Up extras that they didn't include on the HD-DVD release.
swanlee 06-17-08, 11:13 AM 40 year old virgin was pretty horrible on HD-DVD, looked more like and upsample than a real HD movie. Sucks cause I really like that movie.
lgans316 06-17-08, 11:16 AM "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" - Never heard of it
"Knocked Up" - Very good movie and much better than Superbad on all aspects including Picture Quality
"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" - Remaster needed

If you like the other 3, you will like Sarah Marshall.
I saw it in theaters, all Apatow films have horrible photography. Every last one looks like it was shot by an amateur. None of them look pleasing in HD.
Count me in for the 3-pack.:)
lgans316 06-17-08, 11:25 AM I thought Knocked Up looked pretty natural and better than Superbad.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the best comedy I have seen this year and will be hard to beat for the remainder of 2008. Saw it twice in theaters and am eagerly awaiting the Blu-ray release.
Thanks for the update, some definite buys for me....sold my HD-DVD's of Knocked Up and 40 year old when a friend bought my player. Really liked both of those, 40 yr old being the better comedy and Knocked up more of a cute, couple type silly thing than raw funny, but both were still great with plenty of replay value, worth owning IMO.
I agree about 40 yr old - for the love of christ, please 86 the EE this time Universal!
I will also get Forgetting Sarah Marshall, a blind buy, but several friends saw it a loved it, respectable RT score as well: Sarah Marshall (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/forgetting_sarah_marshall/)
JBlacklow 06-17-08, 11:37 AM Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the best comedy I have seen this year and will be hard to beat for the remainder of 2008.Yep. IMO, the only one that looks good enough to beat it is "Pineapple Express" which is--guess what?--produced by Judd Apatow!
Hell yeah! 40 Year Old Virgin!
JBlacklow 06-17-08, 01:34 PM HDD confirmation for those that want it:

loregnum 06-17-08, 01:52 PM I'm down for forgetting sarah marshall and maybe 40 yr old virgin although I did pick up the hd dvd recently for cheap. If the blu-ray blows it away then I may re-buy since the EE is fairly annoying on the hd-dvd.
Anyway, good to hear about these 3 titles coming out.:
wizzack 06-17-08, 01:55 PM awesome news. all 3 for me please.
unless the 40yov disc looks horrible like the hd dvd.

Rakesh.S 06-17-08, 02:07 PM Universal: Please lay off the edge enhancement
Can't wait for Sarah Marshall! It has the potential to look great with the tropical setting, but the PQ looked very soft in the theater I saw it in.
I already own Knocked Up and 40YOV on HD-DVD and while they are great movies, they look pretty average in HD.
LBFilmGuy 06-17-08, 05:01 PM Sarah Marshall had it's moments, but the only good thing about it was Mila Kunitz. She's gorgeous.
Knocked up, had it's moments as well, but wasn't too impressed. Dialogue and acting too forced and stiff...they just stood there reciting their lines.
40 year old virgin is by far the best of the 3.

Yes she is. Can't wait to see her in HD :)

Don't forget Kristen Bell :)
Jay Mammoth 06-17-08, 06:40 PM arrrgh Sept 30th? Sarah Marshall was awesome, will be waiting impatiently until its release. If the 40YOV and Knocked Up aren't straight ports of the HD-DVDs I'll pick up the 3 pack.
Jeffroy 06-17-08, 09:07 PM Yes! Buying Sarah Marshall day one. Have both Knocked Up and 40YOV on HD-DVD. Satisfied enough with Knocked Up's A/V that I wouldn't double dip, but if they did a really good re-master on 40YOV, I wouldn't be able to resist! So I shall wait for reviews on that one.

I'm hoping all of the special features from the 2 disc edition of Knocked Up is on the Blu-ray that way I can get rid of my DVD, I love the special features on Apatows flicks, packed with funny stuff.
Chris Rein 06-17-08, 09:47 PM The three pack it is for me! Great pack all around!
trent82 06-17-08, 10:02 PM this is just getting stupid...there are now 8 movies i want just in september alone...this is gonna be an expensive fall.
Dr Kain 06-17-08, 10:25 PM Knocked UP was a terrible movie, but Sarah Marshall does look like it could be funny. Then again, I thought the same thing about Superbad and my god was that very unfunny.

I'm going to just throw this out...
Maybe you're not a fan of Apatow's work?
40 year old Virgin and Knocked up were fantastic movies. I laughed so hard that I cried during both of them.
Superbad was funny too, but I felt that the two crazy cops in that movie took it in a totally different direction and shattered the illusion of plausible teenage stupidity that otherwise seemed to be working.
Haven't seen the Sarah Marshall flick. I'll have to check that out.
lgans316 06-17-08, 11:32 PM +1. 40 and Knocked Up were much better flicks than the overrated Superbad. SecondSpin have 9 copies of SuperBad BD for $12.99 and no one seems to buy it. You can apply the 20% off coupon HEYNOW to get it for $10 including free shipping which is the correct price for that stupid overrated movie.

Sounds like he needs to get some "P" in the "Va-G". :D

Your not a Jonah Hill fan are you? Superbad doesn't follow the same themes as the other movies. The others are about adult life. Superbad is an exercise in improv expertise. Every little bit is hilarious. Plus Superbad has the best cast.
All of them are worth owning. Plus the extras are also worth it. There's always something worth watching.
BTW- That gag in Superbad about everything looking like d#Tks was hilarious. If you didn't pass out laughing at that, then you not the audience this was intended for. Superbad isn't overrated at all.
If you guys are interested in any of these check out the Redband trailer for 'Pineapple Express' - funniest film of '08 sight unseen.
lgans316 06-18-08, 01:40 AM You see, I am not an American to really understand and appreciate movies that follow certain themes. I found American Pie, Superbad & 40 YOV to be 10 times better than Superbad. Perhaps Superbad was too Americanish for me. Aforementioned I am not a fan of Jonah Hill but found this guy Jason Segel to have better body knowledge and sense of humor though he is 2 years younger than me.
Patsfan123 06-18-08, 02:00 AM Yeah Superbad = American high school pretty well. It's hard for me to imagine, but I guess alot of the jokes would go over an outsiders head. I think thats why alot of Americans under 30 love this movie so much.
I'm 39 and get Superbad, no problem, think its a great, fckin' funny flick. ;)
These are all worth buying (if the PQ/AQ comes through), I know, different strokes, but too me, they're all well done, funny, different movies - raw, cheap comedy (40 yr old), cute yet serious & relatable for many story (Knocked Up), zanny high school "gotta get laid" life (Superbad), etc...haven't seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall, have no idea, but going by the guys track record, I'm guessing it could/should be great as well. =)
Matt_Stevens 06-18-08, 09:38 AM So, there is man meat in Sarah Marshall. That doesn't interest me. Do we at least get some naked babe action because I miss the 80's when R rated films had naked chicks?!?!
40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN was so-so. Same for KNOCKED UP. But I laughed myself silly in SUPERBAD.

Just some pics of girls flashing their breasts hanging-up on a bathroom wall - most notably a PhotoShopped (ie. not real) one of Mila Kunis' character.
BZiggyZ 06-18-08, 10:48 AM Definitely picking up Sarah Marshall. The puppet show alone is worth it. Got the other two on HD and enjoy those as well. Count me in with those who thought Superbad sucked. It had some random funny vulgarity but none of the charm of the other three movies.
msgohan 06-18-08, 10:57 AM I found American Pie, Superbad & 40 YOV to be 10 times better than Superbad.
Typo? :D
I'm thinking 40-Year-Old Virgin is a no go for me judging from the HD DVD screenshots. Bad EE. I'd lay down decent money that this will be the same master.
Incidentally, I read the thread title 3 times on the front page before realizing that Sept 30 is my birthday...

I'm dying to see Pineapple Express, but I seriously think Tropic Thunder and Step Brothers are going to give it a serious run for it's money... 3 of the best Red Band trailers I've seen...can't wait!
Matt_Stevens 06-19-08, 08:46 AM I closed my eyes and plugged my ears during the TROPIC THUNDER trailer at Incredible Hulk. Trailers for comedies are all to revealing. They blow all the big laughs so I avoid them like the plague.
lgans316 06-19-08, 10:18 AM Typo? :D

Caught red handed by grammar police.:o
Doom878 06-23-08, 04:30 PM I'll be getting the 3 pack alright. 4 sho!
