I have the following components in my HT:

Philips Upconverting DVD Player (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP5960-Player-Upscaling-direct/dp/B000G18DR0)

Onkyo TX-SR505 7.1 Receiver (http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR505-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B000OBOGEG******sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1213756226&sr=1-1)

Klipsch Reference Series for the speakers.

I have a 5.1 setup.

I'm running the coax digital cable (single audio cable) from the DVD player to the receiver and have it set up that way.

However it appears the actual sound is only stereo. I've changed the different surround modes and the "true" surround does not happen. Say if someone is behind you, it does not sound like it, it sorta does but the sound is also from the front speaker too.

I'm sure its a setting on my reciever but I cant figure it out.

1. Have you gone through all the audio calibration procedures on the Onkyo?
2. Have you selected a true 5.1 sound track from the discs you have played?
3. Do not use a surround mode; just let the Onkyo decode DolbyDigital or dts.

Let me add that the DVD player must be set to pass bitstream audio and for DTS make sure that it's enabled in the DVD player.

Yes, I've gone thru the intial setup where it plays the strange sounds and adjusts the DB levels on each speaker.
2. Have you selected a true 5.1 sound track from the discs you have played?
Not sure, by default when I change the audio mode, most of the time it says 5.1 by default or I can change to a narrator which says 2 channel.
3. Do not use a surround mode; just let the Onkyo decode DolbyDigital or dts.
I dont think either indicator is coming on. I will double check.

Not sure, by default when I change the audio mode, most of the time it says 5.1 by default or I can change to a narrator which says 2 channel. Select it on the player from the disc menu. Have you set up the audio output on the player?
