Costco Blu ray sale: There is a sale at costco with these price adjustments:

all $19.99 movies are now $14.99
all $18.99 ..................... $13.99

You'll get the instant $5.00 discount as you cash out.
There are some that are discounted by $7.00

They had a fairly good selection including " I am legend" for $13.99 (with discount)

Merry Christmas all

Chapper

I don't think it's ALL titles priced as you've stated. The signs at my costcos last night listed the studio and a "model" number. Which limits the discounts to only those titles from X studio and that have X model number on that price sticker.

You are correct.
The Costco.com sale has been going on for awhile now and is limited to certain titles from Fox, Sony and Warner.
Certain Costco locations may be having their own sales but my local one is not.

I think it just depends on how hungry the industry gets with this economy.
Anyway, I don't want to get this thread off topic with to much procrastination, but I am curious as to whether anyone has heard rumors of aggressive Q1 sales to really crank things up.
I think we are going to have to see some serious marketing or things could get awfully painful on the Blu Ray front.

Well, IMO things are acually pretty hot for BR right now. They've gone the way of chaeaper/sales priced players this season and the players are selling like hot cakes. Once you buy the player, you're gonna buy the discs no matter what they cost... or at least rent a ton of them anyway.
More sales for software will come eventually. I think they are just concentrating on getting the players in homes right now.

I checked my BofB order and it was Dec 2. I requested return authorization and then called to see if they would be willing to make some kind of adjustment. They weren't willing to directly adjust my price, but they were willing to provide a $10 credit towards a future purchase. That seems fair to me and so I agreed -- I'm reasonably sure I'll be purchasing from Amazon again at some point :)! Now I just have to decide what to apply my Best Buy $5 rewards zone coupon to -- BofB was looking promising at $37.49 less the coupon :)!

I wish we had deals that were worth it. 99% of the time the Amazon.com prices destroy any thing up here in Canada. Especially with our dollar down again. Prices here have risen between 20-40% on BD media over the past month or two. I am a heavy collector but I stopped buying completely recently. I will probably drop $200 - $300 in the stores on the 26th and maybe preorder some on line if I find a deal. Then that will be it until the dollar turns around again. I'm thinking by the end of Feb we will be back in the 90-95 cent range.

I meant hot sales for players, not media. Over the past month there have been lots of deals on players, and when the deals are on, the players are flying off the shelves. Deals on media have been sparce at best. That is why the low sales for media this season.

I agree.
Player deals have been pretty good. But as good as they are, they are going to have to drop even more for mass adaption. Especially in this economy.
Movies in my opinion have even farther to go. I think we need to see $15 - $20 for normal pricing before we'll see the public buy into the format.

Has anyone seen any good deals on Death Race or Traitor?

"just let your soooooul glo"

Got a peek at next Sunday's Best Buy insert. They will have some two-packs for sale at a decent price if you're interested in both movies:

For $22.99 (equal to $11.50 for each movie):

Next and Face/Off
We Were Soldiers and Payback
Shooter and The Italian Job
The Sum of All Fears and Patriot Games
Coming to America and Trading Places

For $26.99 (equal to $13.50 for each movie):

Drillbit Taylor and Norbit
Cloverfield and Sleepy Hollow
Tomb Raider and The Ruins
Nacho Libre and The Spiderwick Chronicles

I didn't spot any great deals on recent/new releases.

The $22.99 at Fry's tommorrow only for $19.99.

It appears to me that most of the sales we're seeing right now are targeted at new Blu-ray owners and people who got a blu-ray player as a Christmas gift. I already own (7) or have seen (3) everything on that list.

It has been pretty much a mess of a holiday sales wise.
They will be bleeding red - all of them.

Just imagine what would have happen if they had slash prices to <$15 & open up their library vault wider.

Their sales would have increased marginally ... since blu-ray sales volumes are not significant when compared to dvd sales and sales of other items. And they would have lost the extra margin on blu-ray sales (primarily new releases) that people would just buy anyways (e.g., Dark Knight).

Why is it every time I come to this thread all I hear is complaints about the pricing of blu-rays? If they are too expensive, don't buy them. Wait till prices come down. If you want to engage in corporate pricing strategy then go work in the head office of a large retailer or one of the studios.

Can we stick to legitimate deals please.

On that note, for Canadians, amazon.ca had matched most of the prices offered by the Canadian bestbuy website and futureshop ... as long as you are not in a hurry. They will backorder items.

Amazon UK has a good price on theAttenborough version (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Planet-Earth-Complete-BBC-Blu-ray/dp/B000SKNIWE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1230405509&sr=1-1). Do you reside in the US? I ask because I ordered three BR discs with a collective price over $40 USD, and the order system would not accept the "10off40" promo code. I wonder if a delivery address in the US has something to do with it? Further, because I live in the US, I don't qualify for free shipping either. The deal on the set of discs themselves (Firefly series plus Kill Bill vol 1 & 2) is a steal until shipping is applied ($12). It's still a good deal even with shipping but there is some way to apply the promo code it would become a great deal...

Some of the complaints come from the early adopters who long for those days when, each week, you could buy discs (by the handfuls) priced from $10-$15.
This holiday season has seen a large influx of new BD users who have no such recollection (and no collection).
I have everything (currently available) I want from their catalogs. I can appease my "jones" by renting (and in the process, weed-out) the new releases. I'll then wait for my price. Those new users, who have nothing to watch, will need to exercise restraint, and it's difficult to show such restraint when you have a new toy, but can't play with it.
Right now, I'm balking at "Wall-E" (something I intend to buy) for $18.

Oh yeah, "Wall-E" at Fry's for $18.

Correction about Kill Bill Vol1 and 2: It's a good deal, not a great deal. I ran the order through just prior to placing it to see the shipping charge and it was just over $10 via slowest method. Again, not outragious but a bit high given the mass of the package. A stealth import duy on top of the true shipping cost?

The interesting thing is that when I added the multi-disc Firefly movies to this order, the total only increased a bit more than $1 ($11.92). This is my current order and overall, I can't complain about that.

An astute observation: I'm one of those new BR adopters, and I haven't shown as much restraint as I should since receiving my BR player a few weeks ago. However, I've been able to keep every disc (approximately 20 to date) below $14 delivered until five minutes ago with my Firefly-Kill Bill Vol1&2 order (unless one measures price by disc count (5 total) which would make the average just under $11 each...):D

Wow Ricwhite, those images look pretty good to me! This is the series narrated by Attenborough correct? i am in the us. i don't know what to tell you though. i noticed it yesterday, when i was thinking about buying sin city and FDTD. i forgot that i couldn't get free SS shipping in the US, but added another disc to the order, hoping to hit the FSSS limit.

when i got to the payment type screen, at the bottom, above where you would enter your GC/promotional code, it said "You have CDN$ 10.00 in gift certificates or promotional credit available for use toward this purchase. Would you like to apply it?". just tried it again and it says the same thing. then when i get to the final screen it says "Visa10off40 -USD 8.54". so maybe try that.

Planet Earth -- Upconverted DVD? No. Afraid not. Yes, the PQ is somewhat inconsistent -- ranging from a low of about 3/5 to as high as a 5/5. I give an average of 4/5 -- which is above average for a BD movie. Here are some sample shots. Remember that these are photographs of a 106" screen and an LCD projector. The actual image is better than what these shots depict.

Okay, I don't normally mind a little OT conversation, but come on......26 huge pics in a pricing thread? That's beyond ridiculous.

BTW, Sleeping Beauty is the 3-disc. It says 2-disc set, but it includes the bonus SD DVD. That's way better than paying $19+shipping on E-bay for a used copy where someone kept the SD DVD for themselves.

a) target $22.
b) which also is a best buy price match then.
c) which then if u use your reward zone points card comes to the equivalent of $0.44.
d) so basically its like getting it at best buy for $21.56.
e) that beats amazon.

Unless you live in one of the few states without it, I think you are forgetting Sales Tax ;-)

The reason the code does not work (just figured this out) is that you must use a new email address. You cannot sign in using your current account. I used a different email address with all the same information and used the code above and got $10 off.

I picked up:
FireFly
Sin City (i know the JPN is supposedly better but at $11US I'll take the slightly DNR'ed version)
Into the Wild

All are sold out or preorders and we have to pay international shipping and I will group them as one order so at the very earliest I won't get it until the end of January. However, the total cost to me was US$51. That's cheaper than just buying Firefly in the US on Amazon at 57.99 plus two free movies (one that is not even available in the US).

Thanks everyone for the heads up.

Doesn't matter what kind of credit card it is, just the bank that handles it. Lots of credit cards charge a fee for doing the foreign currency conversion (which is complete BS, it's just a way for them to make more money). To know if your card does it or not, you'll have to refer to your card_member_agreement or call them and ask them.

Really though???... 1% is going to kill the deal (5 cents -> possibly 50 cents for the whole order)?.

Just placed an order for KB1&2, SinCity, and Firefly for C$68.75 (includes C$15.95 shipping and the C$10 discount.) That would be about US$57.30 at a 1.2:1 exchange rate, however, that doesn't include currency fees. So, given the emailed invoice doesn't show USD (only CD), how do you conclude $37 USD shipped?

PS. Oh, is the currency fee only on the order of 1%? If so, then I see what you're saying!

YES, the card company or bank issues the fee... just like I said. ...and just like I said, it does NOT matter what kind of card it is IE: Mastercard or Visa. It just demends on the bank that owns the card, wether they charge the fee or not. "Card company" and "bank" are the same thing anymore. Rarely does the bank not have a "vested interest" in the company that handles the card. By disagreeing with a statement that was offered to help you, you are only splitting hairs to say the same damn thing .

The shipping fees are part of the the price of the discs. I just bought Kill Bill 1 & 2, Dusk Till Dawn, and Sin City earlier today and they averaged about $11.6x each including all fees and shipping. That is an incredible deal for 4 Disney associated movies. They may be that price later next year in the USA, but not before then. If that price comes out to be "deal killer", you probably shouldn't be buying in the first place.

Well Firefly is OOS and Sin City is a preorder, so it placed my order in CAD. I simply plugged the numbers into a currency converter to get a rough estimate.

I guess my next question is, how am I going to get charged for the conversion then? Is Amazon.ca going to charge my card in USD when they ship, or is my bank (I used a debit card) going to be charged in CAD and have to convert it?

Err on second thought, Im gonna change the order over to my Paypal card. Simply because if they do charge it in CAD, I know I wont have any problems with it since I've used paypal with other currencies before.

You will be charged in CDN$, since that is the currency of the country where the business is located. Your debit/credit card statement will show the conversion using their most convenient exchange rate (i.e. the one that sucks most for you), plus usually a currency conversion fee of about 1% or a few dollars, depending on the Card Holder agreement terms and conditions.

You never bought stuff from overseas before using a CC? I get stuff from all over the dang planet (via on-line purchases or in-person ;) ), so I'm just used to seeing all this I guess.

Make sure you understand what you're going to receive when ordering from Canada. Several years ago I ordered back to the future on DVD with a similar deal. Buy from amazon.ca in Canadian $$ and save US $$. Seemed like a great deal, and the discs were known to be idential to the US version. When it arrived the packaging was not the US packaging. It had both english and french writing on the outside of the box. Back to the Future / Retour Vers Le Futur. That purchase stings everytime I see the box.

It doesn't all have french writing on it. I ordered several Blu-rays from inetvideo a while ago and none of them had french on the cases.

If you look at Amazon.ca's listings, they sometimes have seperate listings for the english and french versions of the movie, and then you can order which one you want. So who knows if any will or will not have french writing on it.

I agree with your statement though. It's the same content on the discs. Who cares about the cover.

AFAIK, if a product is sold in Canada for distribution across the country, it is required to have both official languages on it (product name and whatever the legally required labeling is like ratings, food ingredients, etc), unless it is a book or obviously language-centric product. If it can be purchased with just English or just French, then the distribution must be limited to specific parts of the country - the Anglo stuff outside of Quebec and the Franco stuff to just Quebec. At least I think that's how it works.

The inetvideo stuff was because they play a little fast-and-loose with where they obtain product and how it is distributed to the US and Canada. They seem to mix US and Canadian stock items quite freely.

IMHO, AFAIK,

You can always ask the people in the Custom Blu Ray Covers thread to scan in a copy of the english only version, or just print out the ones they have already created. There's some pretty cool KB1&2 covers by HD Joe in there.

I don't have the Amazon copies but i do have the ones from my local walmart here, and on the cover it just says (Tuer Bill Volume 1) and (Tuer Bill Volume 2) in tiny black print underneath the title, but the spine and the back all have french as well.

The audio on them both is English 5.1 Uncompressed, 5.1 Dolby Digital.

I think its pretty much a given whenever you order something from Canada its gonna have english and french on the packaging.

Seriously, if its all the same product, what does a little french on the package matter?

Actually, some disks are different. For example, I rented a SD-DVD of "The Island" in Toronto from Blockbuster and it had French in Dolby Digital 5.1 and English in only Dolby Pro-Logic. WTF.

+1, combined with the fact that the .ca prices have proven to be notably lower than the US equivalents in many cases. Thus, I think it is very relevant to this thread.

Dumb question: I have two sets of orders in with Amazon.ca with three discs (or disc sets) in each. I was able to leverage the 10off40 discount in both cases. Shipping is ~$12 for one and ~$14 for the other.

Should I attempt to combine both orders into one for shipping to hopefully drop the aggregate rate? Some of the discs are OOS but I don't mind waiting for a single shipment. Any risk of reversing the discount?

I passed because of budgetary reasons... but I noticed today that Band of Brothers Blu ray was back up to $50+ on Amazon. I swear I saw that the sale it was on last week was running through 1/4 or something like that. That just seemed odd to me to go up before the sale it was part of ended.

The price that it is at RIGHT NOW is the sale price. The lower price that you saw was a result of Amazon price matching the sale at Best Buy.

Maybe it's because there's so little in the way of true deals out there at the moment. A dollar or two off isn't a real deal, though obviously helpful. I saw a guy on CNN.com who said it'll be next week before we start seeing deals in all sorts of merchandise. Right now, stores are counting on people having gift cards burning holes in their pockets. They figure people will spend those without having to be motivated by big markdowns. Personally, I'm saving my Best Buy and Amazon gift cards until I see some better deals. I bought Band of Brothers at the $37.49 price, but that's all this Christmas. Patience will pay off.

You would think Amazon would do a bit better than simply price match BB. I am usually within a mile of my local BB every day. It is a lot easier to simply go into the store and pick it up than deal with the risks involved with mail order.

You gotta be kiddin me. I can order from Amazon and never have to leave my home. Pay the same or even less 99.9% of the time, never have to use my car, gas, time, pay sales tax, or deal with the crappy_ass Worst Buy customer service.
There are almost NO risks involved with ordering discs off the net. I have purchased more than 2000 discs off the net and had shipping issues like maybe 5 times. That's a 99.750% success rate.
Thank god for the internet, or I wouldn't be able to afford everything I have to support this hobby... my amps, receivers, speakers, projector, all my players, HT furniture, ect,ect,ect...
If I had to go to local stores to buy all that stuff, it literally would have cost 3 times more, and if that were the case, I'd be sitting in an empty room.
Almost everytime I do drive by Best Buy, the parking lot is full. I guess I just don't get it.

It is called instant gratification, Smarty-pants. Some folks just want to have it now rather than later and are aware that will cost them a little more but are ok with it.

Now we all have had crappy customer service experiences but part of why crappy customer experience is more prevalent is that we the consumer want more for less. One consequence is the business makes less money which ultimately trickles down to lower pay for employees. Under valued employees are less likely to kiss our butts when we grace them with our presence.

Now my devils-advocate piece has been shared what I mentioned does not give business/employees a get out of jail free card. Even if undervalued the employees shouldn't mistreat customers.

Another reason folks still go to stores and dealers is that they want human interaction and expect the salesman to have knowledge with skills to help the customer understand the technobabble. Not everyone is willing or capable of reading sources such as these forums, it can be overwhelming and difficult to discern fact from conjecture and opinion.

Best Regards

No, I am NOT kidding you...
Well, first let me say that almost every piece of my theater was bought on-line. Including a sizable portion of my movies.
That being said, I do buy some things for my home theater locally.
Yes there are risks and in my opinion, inconveniences that go along with on-line shopping.
Scenario: If I can get a movie at my local B&M store for only a buck or two more than on-line pricing... after tax, I am going to do just that. With that, I get instant gratification of having the movie that evening. Plus, I don’t have to worry about returning a defective item.
If nothing else, it pumps money into my local economy.

Agreed. Used code MAPNEWNCSAVE and paid via Amex using an existing Amazon acct. Works fine for order >$CDN 40. Nice deals on a few titles, especially with the $10 discount and the 0.82 exchange rate (more than enough to offset the shipping charges).

Some if not all OT deleted. If we continue to get more report posts and off topic posts, the easiest action is to lock the thread. No one wants that.

Please remember that AVS IS NOT A DEALS/WHERE TO BUY forum. The owners have been nice enough to provide a place (this thread) for a discussion on deals/where to buy. The expectation is the membership is adult enough to manage it on their own with little to no moderation attention. If it becomes a problem, then it could be closed on a temporary basis or permanently.

I should point out that we may take another action. We have the option of banning ppl from posting within a given thread. That could be the best way of handling those that want to use this thread to argue and cause problems.

this in no way should be a debate thread. Pretty simple...here's a deal at X store. Shouldn't be much more posted here than that.

That's a good deal if you only are interested in the movies since it says "2 discs" when each BD flick comes with 2 discs for each movie. So I'm "guessing" this is a stripped down set of just the movies. I'm tempted to pull the trigger on them too but I have not seen the second one so I'm not sure how good it is!
