Ordered Cloverfield and 300 on BD (Had it on HD DVD and sold it) from Tower.com on 6/24, shipped today 6/25. Not too bad IMO.

Sure it "shipped" on 6/25...but you aren't understanding. You will hopefully get it by 4th of July. I just got my order of Cloverfield and Flags of Our Fathers today (6/26) which "shipped" on 6/14.

That's the complaint people have with Tower... it doesn't really add up why there is a huge gap in the alleged ship date and when you actually receive it.

That's because it was actually sold by and shipped by DeepDiscount. From my experience, it takes 12 to 14 days to receive an order from DD after you get the shipment notification.

My Tower.com order was shipped via Mail Express with delivery confirmation and arrived at my local post office within two days of actual shipment from Miami. The problem was that they took 7 days to ship after they sent me an e-mail that my order "shipped".

I don't know if you have a Zia Records anywhere near you but I picked up Weeds - Season 1-3 on Blu-ray for about $55 total ($15.99 each for S1 & S2 and $23.99 for S3) there last week. Pretty good deal considering the seasons on DVD were a few bucks more. Good Luck!

Warner Brothers 30% off code ANWBTS is still active as of today (it was supposed to have expired on 6/24). I picked up the Orphanage and the Dirty Harry Ultimate Collection.

BTW, the copy of Men In Black I got from Tower.com had the free movie cash (which is worth $7.50 for me since I am going to see Hancock and movie prices are about $10.00 in my area).

I got the same offer today in the mail from Columbia House. I used to be a member of the dvd club years ago. Three Blu-rays from a limited assortment for a total of $20.97 shipped and you have to buy either 3 full priced Blu-rays or dvds in the next two years. This seems to be a new promotion as you never need to buy a dvd if you don't want. So the Blu-ray membership era seems to have begun.

My stepdad signed up with CH for DVDs... They send him movies every [whatever time period] and if he doesn't send them back his account is charged whatever price they set for it. I believe he paid $30+ for Shrek 3 1-disc. The worst part is he doesn't really watch movies, they just stay sealed...

LOL, it's called the directors selection, and if you don't want it all you have to do is decline it. They cycle about every 3 weeks and I get an email saying I have a new directors selection. I click on the link in the email and decline it. It literally takes 15 seconds once every few weeks.

Yarp. I think it's funny how people complain about CH sending them discs that they don't want. It's not like the whole system is made clear right up front when they sign up, and it's not like it only takes a few seconds to say "No Thanks" when they get the "Selection of the Month" notification.

looks like this offer is going old school. no email or internet sign up. there is a spot to sign up the required email address for the Director's Selections offer to be emailed or have it arrive in the mail. the offer is:

4 BR's from the list given for $4.99 with option for 5th at $19.99. you then have to purchase 3 BR's OR DVD's in the next 2 years.

not sure how or why i got this offer, but i am definitely signing up. there is an 888 number to call and claim. not sure if the "personal savings code and preferred status number" are the same on all, but if someone PM's me, we can compare numbers and see if this can work for all.

Guys,
This used to be a good thread to find the good disc deals but now they have mostly dried up. I just read Sound and Vision head-in-the-sand "Five Reasons to Buy Blu-ray" article. One was the hardware should drop this fall. They didn't even speak of the 15% latest and recent raising of the disc prices.

So I'm dropping back to SD discs and being very selective about which discs I purchase. I even read what the British press has to say as many American reviewers push simply terrible movies. I don't mind dropping $20 for a disc but that is my limit, especially since my PC is so capable with SD discs. Very disappointed with Blu-rays top tier $40 price for a 40 year old movie like the Sand Pebbles. So the industry will be getting a lot less income from me.

That's an easy solution.

Netflix or Blockbuster Online.

Rent them.

Get the initial fix out of the way.

Like it. (or if you hate it, you just lost 2 hours of your time and not $$)

Wait.

Buy on sale or used at a nice price.

Rinse.

Repeat.

And if more people actually do this, Netflix/Blockbuster will carry more of the same title and prices will drop faster.

Gone are the days for me that I buy everything like I did on SDVD.

That's why I'm in this thread constantly. :)

Ditto. I've got almost 900 DVD's that I might never watch again. Don't want to see that happen with Blu Ray.

I'll probably limit myself to 12 - 20 titles per year to purchase. In 5 years when BD is replaced, I won't feel so bad.

The British Press has to say????? Uh, they don't say much nice about anything American (as with most of Europe). Try reading Ralph Pott's reviews right here in AVS Forum. He does an outstanding job. Also, stay away from print magazines in general as their revenue is based on advertising. As a result, they tend don't bite the hand that feeds them. As far as pricing, I starting purchasing DVDs when they first came out and you could not find any for under $19.95 ANYWHERE. If you look around, you will find that even $39.99 list Blu-Rays can be had for under $20.00 if you are willing to wait a few weeks after initial release on Blu-Ray. I have been using Blu-Ray Boxsets and have been finding great deals. I haven't paid more than $17.00 (including shipping) on my last dozen or so purchases. As an example I got both of the National Treasure BDs for under $17.00 each delivered.

Dom

+1. More power to him doing reviews but get them off of the front page!

Agreed. And personally I haven't been too impressed with the reviews. Not to mention that he seems to be averaging about a 91 or 92 for all of the reviews he's done so far. Even the terrible movies seem to be getting about an 80 simply because they're in HD. I'll look elsewhere for more discriminating reviews.

Now that the Circuit City deal is gone, here are the current best prices I could find...

bhphotovideo.com | Verbatim BD-R 25GB
$9.50 each. Price for 10 pcs shipped $101.25 (to my zip code anyway) (good retailer)

superwarehouse.com | Verbatim BD-R 25GB
$8.99 each. Price for 10 pcs shipped $99.89 (can't vouch for retailer)

monoprice.com | Ritek BD-R 25GB
$8.37 each. Price for 10 pcs shipped $92.20 (to my zip code anyway) (good retailer)

Good deals on eBay sometimes. Do you guys have any other sources?

A prime example of the type of undiscriminating reviewer which I mentioned in my original post. The disc mastering should be faithful to what was shown in the theater. Instead the film grain and high frequency detail are being removed. What would Crocodile Dundee say?

Ditto, although they don't say what company they use for shipping, so the tracking number doesn't mean much (on mine at least). It would be funny if we actually got the movie from this company. Definitely glad I bought through buy.com instead of from them directly...then I would be very sad.

Funny, for me it's the exact opposite. I've been buying from DD for years and always get my order 3-4 days after my order is placed. And I always choose the free shipping. I'm in San Diego, Ca. but I don't think that's a factor as packages have come from all over the US.

But Tower... that says it all for me. First time I've ordered from them. My order took 14 days to arrive after I got the confirmation that my order had been shipped. This order came from Miami, FL. but 14 days ? Man, the Pony Express was faster  But it was free shipping and great prices, so really, that made waiting OK.

I got my Rambo Trilogy from Deep Discount too, it took about 11 days to get here. I watched 1 and 2 with my dad, and if they said 2 is decent compared to 3 then I might just sell the third one lol. One was very good, had a good story and actually made sense. 2 wasn't that bad, it was just too predictable and he seemed to have lost his POW "flashback, fears" that made the first one interesting. Is three really that bad, how about four?

re-enter the code ANWBTS a second time. you need two items in your cart -- it does look like it will let you get (away with) the 30% off with just twister in your cart but not batman begins in your cart. you aren't supposed to be able to use the code, though, unless you have two items in your cart.

They are going to mail me a prepaid shipping label to return the whole thing and will send a replacement once they receive the "defective" trilogy back. I'm glad they're taking care of this without me having to pay shipping, but the downside is I'm guessing it'll probably be a good month before I get the correct Trilogy. There's no help -- you've obviously made it to the point that the rest of us got to months ago.

They started cracking down on the GCO deal to the point where for most people this deal has been dead for over a year, if not longer...the only people who have really been able to keep using/abusing it are folks who never took advantage of it to begin with, really, or just found out about it.

Yeah me too. I ordered AVPR a week ago with google checkout. That was my 2nd time using it.The 1st time i use it was over a month ago so maybe that's why my order went through.

Done, thanks. Ironically, even though I like Alien/Aliens and Predator is one of my fav sci-fi flicks of all time, these movies have avoided my viewing pleasure. Looking forward to it. :)

So you like the Alien(s) movies and Predator movies but haven't seen the AvP movies yet? I'd say go into them with the assumption that they'll be completely awful and then they might end up being a little bit better (or on par) with what you expected. But if you go in thinking they'll be anything like the previous fanchises then your bound to be disappointed.

If you guys are only using it once or twice you probably won't have a problem. Some of us used it...umm...a few more times than a handful, and in those instances, they definitely shut you down after a certain point. Good thing they didn't regulate it for a few months after it first went up ;)

Ya, but I'd still like to know... just in case the deal comes back or pops up somewhere else.

Your best bet was to use a new email address and a virtual credit card number. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. A few days before it expired, I was able to order 5 movies in separate orders and they all went through. Then I tried to get more the next day, but none would go through. Seemed completely random.

How the hell long does it take for WHV to ship a title? I pre-ordered a few movies on Tuesday morning and ordered a movie that's currently available. 48 hrs is hardly impatient to ship an in-stock title. If there's a free shipping option I could expect that there would be no rush, but still 48hrs is plenty IMO.

Not to be a complainer or anything, but this thread has almost completely turned into a shipping B&R (***** and rose) thread. It's getting really annoying reading through everybody's shipping stories. This might be asking too much, but can we get either a shipping thread or a notice on the first page of this thread about general shipping info from these companies.

I like to come here looking for good deals, and it's getting to the point that I don't want to come in here anymore.

BTW, thanks to David Hir for the Kill Bill info. That's what this thread should be all about.

Yes, the cost of shipping is part of the deal, but people complaining that they ordered from store xxx 2 days ago, and they still haven't received shipping confirmations, and then the inevitable 3+ posts saying how good/bad their experience with store xxx is, can be excessive and annoying.

But there's just too much whining on here when it comes to shipping. Either the free shipping is too slow or the fast shipping is too expensive. Personally I used to love this thread because every reply had a deal posted in it. Now it's clogged with shipping posts. It's almost as if we need a seperate thread where people can post the shipping deals they've found. The price of the item is all that should matter in this thread. Shipping costs are up to the buyer depending on how patient they are.

I think shipping is $3.85

In the end it's about the same as a domestic Fox or Paramount title. And this has 7.1MA

Two questions is this worth owning at that price, and will the movie put the MA track through its paces?

The last month or so? IMO they've sucked ever since BD won the format war. I hardly buy anything anymore.

yeah, BR deals have definitely died.

The 13.99 sale at fry's is always the same trash from Sony (Fifth Element, Patriot, Dracula)...ugh.

It's about time those titles made it to the bargain bin ($7.99 or less).

ANWBTS is still active as of right now at whv. too bad some of their september releases are not up for preorder yet. i'd like to pick up risky business and l.a. confidential. oh well.

I know, I'm hoping they get posted to WHV before that code runs out!

risky business is available for pre-order and ANWBTS is still working. too bad i don't have any other warner stuff i want other than la confidential, which is still not up yet. lame.

Sorry, I read through the thread everyday and don't recall ever seeing anyone post it. I've not seen this sale before but did pick up some movies in their last sale. Some movies I see in this promotion I didn't even know were out in blu-ray. My bad.
