I don't know guys, I don't get why a trilogy costs so much. This just isn't a deal to me. With tax it still ends up almost $23 per movie. Usually the more of something you buy, the better a discount you should get. I try to get movies around $15 each. So to buy 3 of them at $23 in a package I just don't see how it's a great deal. And $20 more at Amazon, that's rediculous! $29 each?? Comparing it to that means nothing to me...You must not know that there's a 4th disc with nothing but hours and hours of HD extras and footage.

OK I did forget about that. But still, it's one extra disc for 3 movies. Often an release will contain 2 discs, and it doesn't mean I want to pay $23 for it (nevermind $29!). This is one extra disc for 3 movies.

Granted I don't expect it to jump down to $45 as a pre-order. But I think the norm on Amazon, et al, should be about $60-65. Then by December I think I should be able to find it for $40-45. :D

I wonder do anyone else think, the sales of Blu-rays are very rare? IMHO, a sale is a disc $15 each or less. Maybe HD-DVD leaving the market was not a good thing for the average consumer....

I don't know dude. It took the DVD original set, just all 3 packaged together, a long time to price drop. It's still $40 for the DVD set new.
I never knew their was 3 starship troopers movies until somebody here mention it a few days ago. Are the other 2 any good?I'm a total box set whore. But after reading reviews for #2 and seeing the trailer for #3 I cancelled my set.:o
I can use the $$ for Godfather now.

Like it was already said, the original SD trilogy was outrageously priced as well. With that one I waited about 6 months till I could get it cheaper. I think I got it for like $40 through the DDD 20% off sale I think. I will wait for this one too. I've got 'em on SD till the price is right. :)

Maybe I'll rent them when they come out just to hold me over. It's not like I watch these movies more than once every few years in all reality.

I love 1 and 2... awesome, just awesome. I make sure to watch them at least once a year. GF 1 and 2 are in my top 20 of all time... love 'em. I can still wait though. For most thngs in life, I can be very impatient, but with this hobby, I've learned to be VERY patient. I've gotten some unbelivable deals on things when I wait till the price is right, and this method allows me to afford things I never could without "smart shopping". :)

Plus a little screw the early adopter.

I think the Spider-Man trilogy is probably $20-30 cheaper now then when it was released. Expect to see these much cheaper when the next run comes out.

This is probably a very stupid question:

When you purchase BD from Amazon in large quantities (30 at a time)...do they ship them together in one box? I'm just wondering if they would come trickling in separately.

Do they charge immediately on pre-orders? Very tempted to just order Godfather now, but I don't like being charged for it already.

For backordered discs you have the option of shipping separately or wait for all.

Case in point: in the Best Buy circular this week, Batman Begins was priced at $24.99, and right next to it, the SD was priced at $4.99. To the average consumer, which do you think they'd go for?

Consider also that the SD is an old release and the BD is a new release of a catalog title. I do not buy SD releases with the single exception of TVonDVD.

Most older TVonDVD are not likely to be released on BD for a long time if ever. I watch them for the content, not the presentation as some are really retro with many scratches and other crude on the releases.

I sent them an email last p.m. asking that and called to confirm their answer this a.m. Since 6-16 they will charge your credit card at the time of purchase no matter how far in advance the prebook is.

2 came out several years ago direct to DVD.

3 is a new release, but brings back Casper Van Dien, and Ed Neumeir (who wrote Robocop and Starship Troopers) is writing and directing this one. It looks like it will be pretty good.

2 is just a practical special FX show. A lot of effects similar to The Thing, but is otherwise pretty useless. I'm surprised they tacked in 3 at the last minute with the new movie. For a long time it was just Starship Troopers: Marauder. Maybe when they didn't get the theatrical release they were hoping for they decided to acknowledge the earlier sequel.

I have ordered from Family Video before. It was slow shipping but I did get my order and it was fine. Took about 2 weeks each time, if I recall correctly.

I had my Spider-Man trilogy release day, but it was a preorder.

VHS was an immensely superior technology back then too. For non AV afficionados and non-wealthy, the prices of a BR is way too high as it is. I for one cannot understand why FOX consistently charges more MSRP for titles when other studios can release for less. It sounds more like greed than anything else. And how can anyone argue against lower prices and defend the high prices charged to current titles? Just a thought.

I remember when Star Wars was 19.99, but ESB and ROTJ were 28.95 each on VHS at a department store with very low prices. When Top Gun came out it was the start of lower prices. As a new release it was going for $14.95.

So after 20+ years prices are virtually the same for a far superior technology and you're complaining? Technology is the only thing that gets cheaper, or at least comparably cheaper, over time.

Still I don't buy any BD for more than $20. $15 - $17 is a good deal on most titles, but there are some titles I'd only pay $10 -$15 for, but those are guilty pleasures; sub-B movies that won't get a lot of spins, like Chain Reaction. I waited on DVD, and I'll wait on BD.

I'd agree with you that Fox prices are too high, as will be Universal's new releases it seems, but I just end up waiting for when I can get them for $20 or less. The sales come, sometimes even at Target. I keep hoping studios will get the message not to let the street price go above $20 unless it's something really special. They'd sell a lot more, but maybe limited production has something to do with it at this stage. Maybe the pricier studios don't have as many lines available to them and they want to make the same amount of profit.

Tower.com: Top Gun = $19.90 (http://www.tower.com/top-gun-tom-cruise-blu-ray/wapi/109141608). They claim it ships within 12 hours rather than preorder... (likewise for The Perfect Storm and I Know What You Did Last Summer)

Is that the best deal around? Amazon doesn't even have a preorder it seems.

DBZ - History of Trunks/Father of Goku is $19.61 (http://www.tower.com/dragon-ball-z-history-trunks-bardock-father-goku-sonny-strait-blu-ray/wapi/112143391), more than $2 less than Amazon. Transformers is $23.99 (http://www.tower.com/transformers-blu-ray/wapi/112199713), almost a buck cheaper than Amazon. Also Batman Begins is $15.86, Cloverfield is at $14.86, and The Fifth Element at $12.86. They have a bunch of others "On Sale" as well but I dunno how the prices are comparatively.

Actually, once they charge your card they are under legal obligation to provide you with the merchandise within a certain period of time (30 days I believe). It's in all those consumer protection laws.

Don't make me laugh (no offense)..., but businesses don't really care about those types of things, like consumer laws. If everyone I know including myself, who have been ripped off or cheated by my local Best Buy store were to file a lawsuit against them for each incident of "consumer law infractions", well... we'd all be rich I guess.:)

When I spoke to the lady at family video I asked her if once the authorization drops off if the charge doesn't go through do they then get another authorization. She said they just put the charge through at the time of the order and no other charges are submitted after that. Maybe they don't have people preordering more than 30 days in advance, I don't know. Their phone number is 888-332-6843 (I got their number when they replied to me in email) If anyone does call them and gets more information please post. I'd like to order from them but if they do charge at the time of order it would change whether I will or not.

Not only that, but there were two versions of the SD release. The one-disc and the two-disc. The two-disc is what was on the HD DVD and basically what's on the Blu-Ray. The one-disc is what's on sale I believe. So it's not really even the same product.

Note: Good deal especially on those Paramount titles but as usual the prices have been jacked up. Shinobi was $10.95 during release and the FOX titles that are listed on sale were priced at $19.99 few months ago. 3:10 to Yuma & War was available for $14.95. So order with care.

Assuming I own every single one of these movies on DVD, which ones would be worth the upgrade to blu-ray?

OhioMike
07-17-08, 08:02 PM
Most of them are an upgrade over the SD versions. Best bet is to take a look at the PQ and AQ tier threads to get an idea of the few that are not worth it. Personally, I am upgrading all of my favorites as I can. The audio difference is the biggest key for me, if it has a lossless track, then it will be a huge upgrade regardless of PQ, which will always at the bare minimum at least have better coloring than the SD version and 99 out of 100 will have a far superior PQ. My 2 cents.

I have only updated to Blu-ray from DVD for about half of the titles available. The movie has to be be one that I will want to watch again and again in full HD glory and the PQ has to be be a serious upgrade.

Generally speaking, the Blu ray disc of a movie should be better (video and audio) than the DVD of a movie... but not all are the same degree better. Also, not all make the movie that much more enjoyable for the added price.

I liken this to back when CD was first coming out, and I had a lot of albums. There were some groups I really liked, so I upgraded to CDs when they came out. Other groups I was fine with the album. Also, some things I continued buying albums (in particular comedian albums) because it just wasn't more enjoyable for twice the price on CD.

With Blu ray (and with HD before that) some movies I will upgrade because they are that good to me... others I will upgrade because the picture quality is that much more impressive and makes a less enjoyable movie more enjoyable... others I will upgrade only when a super deal comes along. But for any new release, I plan on buying the Blu ray unless they are just really raking me over the coals with the price, in which case I will wait for a sale or a coupon.

No thankfully its not. The synopsyis tells you everything you should want to know bout the film. Its a movie set in Australia, full of amazing cinematogrophy(should look especially good in 1080p). Is that David Spade???

Of course that was a joke. When it's small, the picture on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421238/) looks kind of like David Spade.

I never heard of it before, but it sounds really good. "Rated R for strong grisly violence" - That's all I need to know.

Borders began a new website recently, independent of amazon. They currently have a whopping 40%-Off coupon (BC4777) that you can use towards 2 items. I pre-ordered the Godfather Coppola Collection for $61.79 (they list original price at $102.99 even though amazon lists it as $124.99).

They also have Baby Mama for $24, Leatherheads for $24, Sweeney Todd for $24.59, Jerry Maguire and Rudy for $17.39 each, the Omen Collection for $75.59 (all after the discount, of course)...and as long as the order is over $25 there's free shipping! And their shipping is pretty quick once the package is sent.

For those like me still sitting on Borders gift cards, this is the best coupon code I've seen. They even have the Heroes sets available, Season 1 for $61.79 and Season 2 for $38.39!

Also, the Godfather set is listed in the category, "DVD - Blu Ray & HDTV - Blu-Ray", so it's obviously the correct version.

Sometimes titles are difficult to find because most of their upcoming BD discs aren't included in the "Upcoming Releases" section in Blu-Ray. You need to search individually for them. Recent additions include Romancing the Stone & Jewel Of the Nile, Forgetting Sarah Marshall (though I'm waiting for the Judd Apatow 3-pack), Sweeney Todd, The Godfather set, Leatherheads, Adventures Of Robin Hood, Baby Mama, Risky Business...

They also have the Universal Action 3-Pack with U-571, End Of Days, Miami Vice (http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=025195046022) which will be $35.99 after the discount!

I almost cried at the pump last Friday. $76 to fill the tank...makes BR prices seem reasonable. ;) Just another reason to enjoy a the "theater experience" in the home. (Along with the couple that brought their toddler to Hellboy showing Saturday night...the kid should be in bed and the audience shouldn't have to endure a crying child-felt bad for the kid).

Oh well, I'll use the border discount wisely to help off-set higher gas prices. :D

I agree about the child. Inexcuseable to bring him/her to that type of showing. I get to go "out" about once every few months. The rest of the time I am with my children, putting them to bed at a decent hour, and not letting them watch horror type movies beforehand.

As for the gas prices making everything else look cheaper. Ummm no, I disagree. Sometimes it does the opposite. "Should I buy that BR movie from Borders?... oh wait, I can't because gas costs me $300 a month." :D.

Thanks for the Borders coupon. Was a bear to get it to work but after deleting all the cookies and temp files from a previous browsing visit, the coupon worked (was previouly getting an "expired" message). Checkout was horribly slow and pages hung there too.

Another one I found that I was excited to get is the Judd Apatow Unrated Blu-Ray Collection (Knocked Up, 40 Year, & Sarah Marshall). For some reason it is incorrectly titled the Sarah Marshall Collection, but the UPC is correct and list of $82.99 is close to the advertised $89.99. After coupon before tax is $49.79.

At this point I don't think anyone knows. Borders previously had contracted Amazon to handle fulfillment for their online orders. They've only recently begun handling it themselves. So all the questions like how they handle pre-orders, shipping times, etc are all up in the air.

Bob Black
07-21-08, 03:49 PM
All I can say about the shipping is that the free shipping is pretty quick to New Hampshire -- arrives in about 3 days time. I received Point Break right on release date, as it was shipped on June 28th and streeted on July 1st. Try to bundle discs together that street at the same time. They DO bundle titles if you choose the free shipping method.

In terms of when they charge your CC, I'm not too sure. Everything I've pre-ordered so far have been paid in full with gift cards, and I still have about $500 remaining. They do remove the funds from the gift card immediately, so I suspect they must charge the CC as well.

Thanks for the link to the Judd Apatow Collection. I saw the Sarah Marshall title but didn;t realize it was the box set. 'Been waiting for that one too! :)

Does anyone know if they dont charge your credit that you use on your order until they ship your order?

Also it sucks that they have Transformers blu-ray listed for pre order price of $40 and some change when amazon pre order price is $24 bucks and some change.I noticed this on borders website on a lot of blu-ray movies I wanted to pre order and buy that the list price on they're website was way to high compared to the amazon.com listed prices. This sadly prevented me from pre ordering Transformers, Iron man, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Hunt For Red October, Clear & Present Danger, Patriot Games, Top Gun, with using the current 40% off code on borders website.

It's a one-per-account, but there's no stopping you from making different accounts. I've used every member in my household with their own email addresses. The only hitch is I can't get the Borders Rewards points on the other orders since it's linked to my email address (without all my family getting their own Reward accounts, that is).

But when I do it on the Godfather collection (in the blu-ray section) a pop up saying "dvd" appears. That gives me pause. As I stated, you can use cashbaq.com for an additional 5% off. I'd appreciate your contacting me for a referral. :)

With regard to Border, not sure if anyone else has confirmed, but my pre-orders (credit card payment) from about 5 days ago have not been billed to me yet, so either they are real slow billing or don't pre-charge.

Also regarding Borders - when I signed up in-store for Rewards, the girl who helped me also set up my online account. I have since found that I cannot log on. Something is not right. I emailed them on Monday, and have still not heard back, despite their "24-48 hours" claim.

I just checked my account. While there are no official charges yet, my "available credit" line has been reduced by $67. It's been a while since I purchased from an online vendor so I'm not sure if that means the charge is pending and about to be added soon (within the next day or so) or if they're just placing a hold on my credit for the amount of the purchase.

Well after browsing my local Bestbuy. I found Batman Begins for $18 dollars at the front of the store. Everywhere else in the store the bluray was $25. I don't know if the discs at the front were suppose to be $18 but I bought one anyway.:)

for just over $50

Damn. I remembered that that code was still working so I just tried adding the Ultimate Matrix Collection to my cart on the warner store site. Won't add to my cart. I guess I'll check back every couple days. Should be any day now since its less than three months away. Hopefully that code will still be working by the time it does become available for preorder.

I always send to friends in the US who throw a bunch of stuff into a package and reship for me. Way cheaper than anything else in the long run, but there's an additional wait of course.

It might also be worthwhile looking into professional package forwarding services if you don't know anyone who would do it.

Does anyone know if you can make a 2nd order and use the 40% off coupon again? Or is it a once-per-account thing?

I used it twice, but only sort-of... I went to a local Borders store that had better prices than the Web site on a few movies and snagged a couple with the paper version of the coupon I printed. The store wouldn't allow purchase of box sets with the coupon. Coupon does state that it does NOT work for anything but single or 2-disc DVD/Blu rays, so I didn't fight them over it.

I then went home and ordered a couple of box sets via the Web site (Web site strangely had worse prices than my local store for single discs but better prices on the box sets) and the coupon code worked fine there.

I paid with the same credit card, but did use two different Borders Rewards cards since I used a relative's in the store but applied for my own online since the Web site required the email address on the Rewards card to match the one entered for the order.

Holy macaroni! I know the MSRP is pretty low on these titles ($14.99 across the board?), but these are some nice prices.

Against my own better judgement, I went ahead and ordered all of the Echo Bridge titles - at $6 a pop (slightly over $7 each after shipping) why the heck not... fortunately, I am easily entertained.

Sorry if this has been asked... I keep debating over buying some discs from amazon.co.uk since I'm in US. Their 3 for 2 sale (with the discs I'm getting) comes out to about 36 pounds including shipping.

My question is ... if i use my credit card to purchase, will i be charged any type of currency exchange charges? It will be around 24 US dollars per movie the way it stands... if there's even more charges it wouldnt be worth it.

I'm not sure of the exact science behind it, but after numerous purchases from dvd.co.uk in their 2hdvdvfor 10gbp my card charged me .07 and .12 for international finance conversion or some such reason but it didn't break the bank!

All banks charge a 1% interbank fee on foreign credit card transactions. Some banks have figured out a new way to gouge their customers and increase their profits by adding an additional "foreign transaction" fee of 2% - 5% depending on the bank, while other banks treat their customers right and haven't done this. The best way to find out how much extra fees are involved with your credit card, if any, is to read the terms and conditions that the credit card company sends out each year or call the bank that issued your credit card.

A head's up, this weeks Best Buy ad has Top Gun listed for $24.99, I just purchased it for a in store pick-up and it is priced at $18.99. Mine will be ready tomorrow.

Top post.

I got the last copy of TG, got them to price match the website and price match the CC amount for Beowulf. Came out with both for around 48-50 inc tax.

Nice.

You should check out the thread on Blu-Ray.com

I guess you could get that for FREE shipped with a $10 coupon.

Yes, you have to sign up for 7-day trial membership (after which you're charged $20 per month), and you have to cancel at least 48 hours after placing your Pre-Order.

I placed pre-orders for the Mummy movies which I got with Movie Cash even weeks after cancelling my trial membership.

Big batch of Moviestop deals if you happen to have one about.

1. BD are buy 2 get 1 free on a bunch of titles. (add said 60 titles, the store had maybe 20 titles out on a table and said those were it..... so your luck may vary)

2. Used are buy 3 and get the 4th free. (The used went from $13 for the DBZ movies to $22 for the latest Harry Potter, with most hovering around $18. You can also mix and match with regular dvd.)

3. If you trade in 4 movies you get 50% off the BD preorders of 6 different movies. I'm assuming it is 4 per 50%. I'm trying to remember the 6 movies. The ones that caught my eye were Transformers, Hulk, and Iron Man, but there were 3 others that I'll try to update when I check back with them. When I asked how long this 50% was going on for, they told me that it was until these 6 were released pretty much.

Good luck all, I'll try to add more details when I get the chance as I'm going back to trade in and pre order Transformers and Iron Man.

Iron man Blu-Ray pre-order is now available ($30) with free shipping on pre-orders.

I ordered it with Stargate: Continuum and the Counterfeiters as free selections (these are both DVD's).

Add $5 for shipping ($3 for Stargate plus $2 for Counterfeiters).

Even with tax it is less than $10 more than Amazon's price ($27.95). IMHO the DVD's are worth at least $5-$10 each.

OAP2008 works, but only when the Borders "discount" is lesser than the coupon off MSRP (i.e., it won't stack with the borders discount, but can be applied if it's better).

New Amazon B2G1 sale. Only 14 titles to choose from, and most of them are the same old same old (and over-priced to boot). This will probably only interest people that are just starting out.

Yep. For new people who're just jumping in think it's great but these deals have been around for years now. What I'm hoping is they do a big holiday push with lower prices for more adoption and I'll catch up then. I'm not too thrilled for paying $25+ on catalog titles.

Not sure if this has been posted.

Apparently a new HD edition of Stargaze has been released with images of space. Retail is 24.95 but Amazon has it for 14.95:
Amazon.com: Stargaze HD: Universal Beauty [Blu-ray]: HDScape: Movies & TV (http://www.amazon.com/Stargaze-HD-Universal-Beauty-Blu-ray/dp/B0018LX9ZI/)

Not sure if this is going to be the new "status quo" but about 1/3 of the movies I want (pre-orders) are over $20, which means I won't be buying them until they're in a B2G1 or other type of sale.

I will not fall into the trap and buy BD the way I bought regular dvds several years ago. I bought movies just to have them. I actually watched very few of them over the years as I wanted to spend my free time watching movies I have not seen. I will only buy my all-time favorites and only when they are on sale (u/$20).

I will not make the same mistake twice.
