Hi, Folks,

I spent about an hour configuring my new remote and it looks promising, but there are a couple of basic set-up decisions that I'm not sure about. My equipment:

Pioneer PDP-4270HD
Dish Network VIP-622 DVR
Marantz SR-3001 A/V Reciever
Sony DVD Player (which I use for CDs, too)

Issues:

1. I hope this remote can change my main way of watching TV to watching through the DVR tuner for video with the A/V receiver offering sound. But unless I mute the TV sound, the receiver audio and tv audio are out of sync. (The receiver gets its audio via a digital optical connections direct from the DVR, so I guess that the TV is taking longer to process video.) Can the Harmony remote automatically mute the TV or adjust the audio timing?

2. Sometimes I prefer TV with the TV's native speakers alone. Should that be a seperate "activity," or is it possible/better to adjust it some other way?

3. Right now, after initial install, the Harmony Remote works spottily in the TV watching activity. Notably, the Harmony remote will turn my tv on but the channel up/down button doesn't work. It seems odd that such a basic function would fail. Perhaps this because my TV watching typically goes through the DVR remote and tuner? Is this something to fix through the learning mode, which looks to be pretty painstaking? Or should I assume that I perhaps incorrectly answered set-up questions somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

David

1. You need to fix the audio delay at the AV receiver level. Look for the the audio delay option which is usually in milliseconds. Good luck with that because you could drive yourself crazy getting it perfect. As for the Harmony muting the TV; yes it could if you add it to the activity as an additional action. I just turn off my TV speakers in the TV setup menu and never use them. I didn't spend money on an AVR, speakers and sub to listen to crappy TV speakers.

2. You may want to set up another activity since your activity will be geared around using the AVR and inputs might not be what you want. Again, why use the TV speakers?

3. My guess is that your channel up and down for that activity is set to control the channels via your DVR instead of your TV. You can either modify the activity and change the channel buttons to be from your TV instead of your DVR or create a new activity. Maybe create a Watch TV activity that doesn't use your DVR where channels are controlled by the TV and a Watch DVR activity that uses your DVR and TV where channels are controlled by the DVR.

My Activity for Watch TV does the following:

Turns on the TV
Turns on the AV Receiver
Turns on the DVR
Switches inputs for DVR video through the AV Receiver to the TV an DVR audio through the AV Receiver and through the surround speakers.
Channel Up and Down via the DVR
Volume Up and Down via the AVR

My other activities are basically the same where the DVR is swapped out with a DVD, XBox, and PS3.

If you get things too specific like you mention you start to lose the ease of use that you were attempting in the first place. Just think to yourself if your mother could make sense of what you set up.

Bada Bing, I have my Harmony set up exactly like you are talking about. I have one activity (Watch DVR with Surround) that uses my stereo system to play the sound, and another activity (Watch DVR) that just uses the TV speakers.

For the activities that use the stereo for sound I went in and added steps to the beginning of each activity. I send out volume up, mute, mute. The volume up command will turn off mute if the previous activity already had the TV muted. Then the two mute commands will put my TV speakers into full mute (the first mute command just makes the colume very low, the second fully mutes it). For my activities that use the TV speakers I just send one volume up command at the beginning of each activity.

This way if I switch from an activity that uses the stereo like Watch a DVD, to an activity that does not use the stereo like watch DVD it will unmute the TV speakers. If I switch between two activities that have the TV muted it will turn the speakers back on for a second, and then send the two mute commands to send them back off.

I do this because I live in an aparment building and I try to only use my TV speakers at night so I don't bother the neighbors.

Thanks for these tips. I'll put in some more time today. I need to dig deeper, I guess, because I don't recall seeing lots of intricate action steps.

And to clarify, like Beerstalker, I find lots of times to prefer TV-set audio over A/V receiver audio, for the peace of people in other rooms. And I don't even have a subwoofer!

If it is replacing the 880 then use the Replace Remote function with the PC software. Otherwise create a new account that will be associated with the H1.
