View Full Version : How long can S/PDIF signal go?

I'm connecting my soundcard Audigy 2 NX with a receiver. The sc is pretty far from the receiver so I want to use a 25ft S/PDIF cable. But I'm not sure if the signal can still be good enough for the receiver to decode. Can anybody tell me if 25ft is a safe length?

Btw: I also want to know 25ft is safe for S-video signal if you have such experience...

Thank you.

Just use good quality cable, and it should be no problem at all.

The recommended maximum distances are 15 meters for wire and 10 meters for optical.

Yes, I actually think IEC defines it 10 meters max for coax as well. I don't recall exactly. But realistically, you can go pretty damn far with it without problems. I wouldn't forsee 25ft on any decent coax being at all a problem. You can do it with baluns over cat5 super far.

You mean spdif signal over cat5 cable? I've never seen such thing so far. Need to do it by myself?

25ft or 25m? I go 50' over coax between PC and pre/pro. This is also AFTER an optical to coax converter box.

meters. But again, I find that somewhat surprising, you can practically go way way farther than that on a decent cable without much difficulty.

Well I've never tried 50m over SPDIF :) I imagine there would be some challenges there.
