The Thing - Excellent PQ and good movie
Casino - Good movie but dirt filled transfer.

I thought Casino looked fantastic with grain intact.

oh hell yeah.

I have the HD-DVD of The Thing, but will gladly upgrade if a lossless soundtrack is included (and all the extras are ported over)

Universal threw us a transfer that was filled with excessive amount of dirt / white specks.

What lgans said. However, the rest of Casino looks good with detail and film grain in tact. I'll definitely be picking up both titles.

Yes. You are right but Universal has to clean up these dirt / white specks in Casino that popped once every 5~10 minutes which isn't within the acceptable limits.

The Thing, one of my absolute favorite movies of all time, and a damn fine transfer on the HD-DVD. Hopefully with a DTS-HD MA track this time.
LOVE the score by Morricone. Though you can tell Carpenter wrote a few pieces of it ;)

Casino looked pretty good on HD-DVD. a white speck every 5-10 minutes isnīt really a huge problem for me. I really didnīt think of it when I watched the movie.

Oh man, I'd be all over The Thing (82), one of my fave movies :)

Sweet! These will both be HD replacements for me.

The Thing will be mine, if released with lossless, otherwise the HD DVD is a keeper.

Got both on HD DVD already, but I'm glad to see that these might be getting BD releases, as they both deserve to be enjoyed by everyone. The Thing, in particular, is amazing.

I just hope they'll do a BD-specific encode of American Gangster with the extended version.

Ha! That's one of the few double dips I'd actually do. :) I don't remember what audio was on it, but I do know that the extended version was available only on the SD side. They could have at least did one of those seamless branching deals. Other double dips...releases from new masters. American Gangster looked great, though.

If this mentality persist Studios will take every advantage of us by throwing dirty transfers.

Casino looked really good IMO. It's not like the transfer that was Total Recall. I watched that again the other day. Random specs on this title aren't that horrible, at least to me. Under Siege has weird lime green specs in the dark scenes and that doesn't bother me all that much. There's way too many poor titles out there to be picking on one like Casino. :)

You are right but the amount of dirt / white specks that popped in Casino was nowhere within the acceptable limits. Dirt / specks flashing once in 30 minutes is ok but once every 10 minutes is way too much. We are taking about Blu-ray and maximum high def experience. :D

the Casino transfer was fine with me as well, wonderful HD-DVD release

Man, this is going to be hard, and won't get any easier. I have both of these on HD DVD, and they're both superb. Would I re-buy them for lossless? I'd definitely strongly consider it. Emotionally there's no consideration - of course I'd want the best version of any movie available - but the internal battle will rage between my heart and my intellect.

As usual with me and movies, my heart will almost certainly win. :p

Transfer was fine but the amount of dirt / white specks was unbearable to me.:(

I will be picking these up to replace my HD-DVD versions. Hopefully if Universal keep this up I can retire my HD-DVD player by year end and free up a space on my rack.

I'd rather have occasional specks than DNR waxy surfaces.
