I sold my 60gb for the MGS bundle and now I need to move all my files. I know many of you have changed our your PS3 in the past how did you do it? I recall someone saying that if you use the backup option you can only restore to the same ps3, is that right? I've got my music files down to about 8gb...am I going to have to copy each artist or is there a way to copy the entire music folder? Some game saves cant be moved either is that correct? I don want to lose my saves. What bout moving stuff downloaded from PSN am I going to have to redownload all that stuff? Once I have everything moved I just do a format to restore back to original before I ship it right?

Thanks for the info guys.

Thats why Sony needs to release an memory card. Then you can take your saves to different machines ,and continue to play them there. You could do that on the older Playstations,or 360.

Why can't you use the backup feature? Check with the Sony boards, but I think it should work.

Otherwise use a thumb drive to backup your save games (the ones that can).

You want proprietary memory cards? Why in the world would anyone want that? We can stick to standard memory such as USB drives (and hard drives) and compact flash/SD (which already work with PS3). Proprietary memory is ridiculously expensive and bad for the consumer.

Sony has a memory card...the produo. I can back up to a portable harddrive and move stuff around but what Im looking for is a shortcut so that I dont have to save each music file by artist or song.

I'll check the official boards...they are a mess most of the time but maybe I can get a straight answer on whether or not I can use the backup function.

PSN games and save files cannot be backed up and put on a different console (I know since I just went from a 40gb to 80gb unit). I'm rather pissed that I lost my Oblivion saves, along with the PS1 saves I had on there for some RPGs. Lame.

Videos, music, and photos transfer fine, which is ironic because I already have those on a portable drive and could've just copied them over without needing a Sony tool to do it. PSN downloads are tied to your online account, so just log back in and redownload. Feh.

All my ps1 and ps2 game saves moved perfectly. Im kinda upset about losing everything on rockband however. Other than rockband everything went fairly smooth. It even let me copy eyecreate videos.

I know Oblivion saves can be moved. But R6V2 and Loco Roco are copy protected saves on my PS3. R6V1 would copy though.

Maybe. What I know is that it won't back up the save file. I do know that in CoD4, pretty much all your MP stats are stored on the server.

If you do the backup function to an external hard drive, and then restore it on the new PS3, all your saves, even the copy protected ones, will work. You just have to make sure you use the name PSN name.

What about downloaded songs from the singstar store. I sold my PS3 and can I re-download the songs to my new 80GB? Or do I have to pay again?

You can redownload stuff you purchased from the PS store without having to pay again. I forget though if there is a limit on how many times you can do it. I think there is a limit on how many different machines you can re-download on.

You could swap the hard drives and tell the purchaser he is getting an 80GB HDD in his 60GB ps3. :)

You cannot put take the hard drive from one PS3 to another PS3 and expect for the other PS3 to load hard drive contents. You have to reformat the hard drive on the other PS3 which means you cannot transfer anything over.

Copy prohibited saved games cannot be copied or transfer. And you are EXPECTED to replay the game from the beginning. I know this because I tried it.

I'm in the exact same situation. I own a 60gb PS3 and I just purchased an 80 gb PS3 which I plan on making my main machine. I've got 1000's of photos, music, demos, and games on my 60gb which I plan on transfering over to my 80gb. I replaced my 60gb with a 250gb hardrive and I just received another 250gb for my 80gb which I plan on installing. If I perform a backup will all my photos, music, demos, games, game saves transfer over to my new PS3? Thanks
