View Full Version : MKV to Playstation 3
Hi,
I'm knew in here, I don't know if this is the right forum
How can I transcode a MKV movie to a format compatible with PS3 using FFMPEG ?
I tried this command :
ffmpeg.exe -i video.mkv -vcodec mpeg2video -vtag MPG2 -r 23.976 -aspect 16:9 -y video.m2v
then I used tsMuxer to mux audio AC3 stream
but PS3 doesn't recognize it, but I can play it in my PC
thanks
whitestang06 06-21-08, 03:55 PM I just use TSmuxer to switch them over to a .m2ts file. Haven't had to do anything else, unless the audio track isn't recognized.
rolltide1017 06-21-08, 05:41 PM I use this program to remux HD MKV files I've donwloaded to .vob, which the PS3 can play. No transcoding/recompression is done if the MKV file contains x264 video and AC3 audio. Works like a charm. I watched all of this season of BSG this way since I don't get SciFi HD yet.

Pugnax555 06-21-08, 08:31 PM I'll second mkv2vob. It basically just repackages the audio and video streams into a different container format (I use mp4). It takes only a few seconds and the PS3 has no problems with it.
Third for mkv2vob... I use it all the time to convert x264 MKV's to MPG's that the PS3 can play. No recompression is done, it takes about only a couple minutes to do depending on the length. If its a format that the PS3 can't play it also gives you the option to re encode to x264 or xvid if you want.
Faceless Rebel 06-21-08, 11:05 PM .mkv also carries subtitles, what does mkv2vob do with those if they are present?
IceCuban 06-21-08, 11:51 PM mkv2vob has a Subtitle options in it's configuration tab. Either pick your preferred language or check "Always Encode Subtitles."
ikecomp 06-23-08, 04:34 PM I love mkv2vob as well. it used to have a problem with DTS tracks but that bug seems to have been fixed now. I watch a lot of anime so having an intact soundtrack along with subtitles is a must for me. the above mentioned program handles it nicely
Can someone post there settings for this prog or instructions
I've used it a least 20 times and every single one has to transcode video and takes ages, I have yet to come across a file that only takes a couple of minutes

using .mpg or .vob usually takes less than a minute for each 40 minute video.
for two movies it took less than five minutes.
are the .mkv's you're using encoded in the x264 format already? or are they in another format?

If the files are 1080p they need to be recoded.

Decado2 06-23-08, 08:41 PM Is there a similar program that does AVI to PS3 and other containers?
jkcheng122 06-23-08, 08:47 PM how are the finished files transferred to ps3 if resulting .m2ts file is over 4gigs?
through your media server. Enter your PS3 browser and go to the IP of your media server. You can now select the video and save it to your PS3 HDD

AmishFury 06-29-08, 07:12 PM tversity make sure transcoding is turned OFF
Pugnax555 06-29-08, 07:17 PM Or change mkv2vob so it's using a different container format.
ToeNipples 06-29-08, 09:43 PM GOTsent is a godsend.

jkcheng122 06-30-08, 12:24 AM hmmm, tversity doesnt seem to support .m2ts either. however, if i changed the file name to .mpg i can transfer it to the ps3, but for some reason there was no audio.
