View Full Version : Benefits of an online ps3?

I'm on a limited budget and am evaluating whether I should buy a router so that I can give my ps3 online access. I have very little experience playing any games online, but I think that could change. Most of my games are sports game, FWIW.

I'm a beginner as far as what the ps3 can do with online/network access, so a beginner's intro into what the ps3 online capabilities are would be appreciated. This goes beyond just games to include file sharing, videos, etc...

Generally, I've always been a single player gamer, but I'm looking to see if the ps3 will provide enough advantages to justify the router purchase.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you can afford a PS3, you can afford a router. Decent wireless routers can be found for under 40 bucks. What will this get you? Free game demos. Internet browsing. Movie trailers. More value for games that feature online play. A whole new group of "gaming buddies".

Pop for that router. You won't regret it...

This generation's consoles are simply incomplete without online access. Even the Wii, believe it or not.

Even if you never play an online game or have no desire to play online games with your friends, online gives you access to firmware updates, free demos, trailers, (lame) web browsing, media streaming from your PC, protein folding, PSN/PS One/PSP game downloads, themes, and probably in the near future movie/TV show downloads.

I've had a PS3 since launch. Just last week I "splurged" and got internet access at home. I have no idea why I waited so long. All I can say is "Do it!"

Completely redefines the PS3 for me.

If you dont have internet access on your ps3 youre missing out on a good portion of usage that you paid for, you could ebay a router for cheap if money is an issue, just make sure you get one. There is nothing better than downloading games and demos, and running around killing people online, at least for me. If youre not interested in online games at least streaming music and videos should be a big lure if youre into PCs. Get a router dont get a game for a while but get a router.

.

I never bothered with online in the last generation, but once I started on Live and continued on ps3, wouldn't have it any other way. It can certainly be addicting and really adds value to many games.

Get router. Get Warhawk. Play online. If you don't like it, send me a PM and I will come to your house and kick you in the junk:).

Just kidding of course, I would be shocked if you found it a bad investment.

Yeah, even if you end up like me, who doesn't particularly care for online multiplayer (introverted personality combined with general hatred of the 12 year old behavior typical in online games), it's a small one-time investment in a router to get it online and you'll get the demos, downloadable games, more-convenient updates, ability to stream video/music from your PC, etc.

It's worth the really small cost of a router, even if you're not playing multiplayer.

Thanks guys for the input, I went out and bought the Linksys wrt54g2 router at BB for $50. While at BB, I thought about getting a cheap headset, but decided to hold off. Is there a valid reason I should spend $40-50 on a headset if I can get a cheaper one for less than $20? The ps3 accepts any bluetooth headset correct?

Thanks again.

EDIT: I just realized the ps3 is super G compatible and the Linksys I bought is only standard G. Will I get a noticeable improvement in performance if I exchange the Linksys wrt54g2 for a super G router? My PC and the ps3 will be the only connections to the router. I've read of so many different experiences with any particular router, it's hard to determine which is best.

don't know about your edit, but at worst buy, you can get a jabra bt125 headset for around $15-$20... and it's a fantastic headset for ps3 only usage.

No need for the Super G or N routers. Normal G routers are faster than most internet connection. You wouldnt notice a difference with the Super G vs the G

Just wondering, would the streaming throughout the network go faster even if the internet doesnt? Along the lines of a server on a gigabit switch vs a 10/100 switch. Just throwing that out there because I am curious.

Thanks

Also, the updates improve the ps3 on a regular basis.

Yea, don't spend that much on a headset. If you want an online game, check out Warhawk, it comes out an headset (I actually use that headset for my cell phone).

[grabs mule by the the neck, pulls him away from this thread and yells "get back in the WW thread mule] :)

I opt for getting a router as well...a whole other side of gaming to discover (with on line that is)...

Yes INTRAnet streaming speeds may benifit from Super G. But INTERnet (online game and demo downloads etc) wont.
