View Full Version : There Will Be Blood locking up?
Anyone had any trouble with "There Will Be Blood" locking up?
I tried to get through this movie on my PS3, but it started locking up in the Sunday Ranch Chapter. I tried cleaning the disc off even though I didn't see any scratches or dirt, and that seemed to help, but it started locking up again a few minutes later.
At this point, I'm not sure if it's the PS3 and at the moment I don't have the patience to troubleshoot it further (quite frustrated that my first screening of this wonderfully reviewed movie has been shot all to hell, since you can never really get that first viewing back).
Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone has had any trouble with this title.
My copy of TWBB played flawlessly on my 60 GB PS3 with F/W 2.35. I think you may have a defective disc.Seconded.
ElChupacabra 06-21-08, 11:48 PM No worries. It wasn't until subsequent viewings that I came to love this film (and so many subsequent viewings there have been!).
SirDrexl 06-22-08, 12:01 AM Unlike many cases where a replacement won't help, I think this is a defective disc.
Make sure you have the latest system update though (2.36).
wyliec2 06-22-08, 01:00 AM Just finished this movie - Samsung BDP-1400 - no issues.

thirded.
Why are any of you using the PS3 for BDs now? MGS4 is on the loose. Start on the 3rd play through.:)
mellis33 06-22-08, 08:09 AM watched last night on a 40 gig ps3, no problems what so ever. good luck in finding resolution
Pioneer lx70A no problems either
raoul_duke 06-22-08, 09:20 AM 40gig PS3. No issues at all.
Plays fine here - and I'm using the crappiest BR player known to mankind - the Philips BDP-9000.
Although my Pioneer 51FD is on preorder :)
Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I'm going to try exchanging the disc and see if that solves the problem.
Well, I exchanged the disc and downloaded the latest firmware and still no luck. I'd have to say my PS3 is shot.
This is the exact same thing that happened to my XBOX360 HD-DVD player -- it started skipping while playing discs and eventually stopped working altogether. Since I purchased my PS3 just to play BRDs, I guess this means I have a $400 paper weight in my theater.
I guess I should have bought the extended warranty so I could just take it back to BestBuy. Lord knows I really should have known better because I had to exchange my PS2 no less than 3 times within the first year.
Game consoles are apparently built to fail. In my mind's eye, I can clearly see a group of skinny young men in suits sitting around a long mohagony table in a board-room somewhere, brainstorming ways to make consoles as crappy as possible.
"I know, let's put a stick of chewing gum on the CPU. It will melt and the whole machine will have to be shipped in for repair!"
"No, that's a terrible idea. Why using Chewing gum when we could use C4? We might even get to blow a few innocent people up!"
"Yes!"
Anyway, I guess I'll call Sony tomorrow and see about the long and ugly process of mailing it in for repair.
Dave Mack 06-22-08, 10:04 PM gremmy, I have read some reports that the 40gig models were starting to tank. Which PS3 do you have?

Wouldn't ya know it, I have the 40 Gig. :(
WestCoastD 07-13-08, 01:17 PM Also loaded a brand-new BD title "There Will Be Blood" last night, however it seemed to be bad. After navigating itself to the movie setup menu I enabled "play movie", after a number of seconds (maybe 10 or 15) it suddenly skipped ahead into the movie (maybe 1min 20sec), and then freeze. Then it would repeat the same behavior jumping further into the movie. I ejected the disc and re-loaded it, still displayed the same behavior. I guess this is a bad disc? don't know if anyon else has experienced this with this title?
Robert Clark 07-13-08, 04:21 PM I have a 40gb model, and has begun refusing to play several BD's, two Jumpers and one Bee Movie...

It's interesting that you experienced something similar to what I was seeing. But as it turns out, it may just be a coincidence because I believe "There Will be Blood" just happened to be the first disc I tried to play after my PS3 decided to pull a major malfunction.
I exchanged my disc for another and still had the same problem. Then I noticed other movies that would either skip ahead several chapters or just freeze up.
I sent my PS3 in for repair and hopefully Sony sends me back a functional unit so I can verify once and for all that the problem was the player and not a whole slew of malfunctioning discs.
But maybe there's something about certain discs (There Will Be Blood, for example), that cause the PS3 defect to manifest itself? I dunno.
jostenmeat 07-13-08, 06:10 PM Sorry gremmy. TWBB played fine on BD-30. Only problem disc with over 50 titles viewed has been Sunshine. Im rather afraid to try it again, as it was really bad, and Im quite curious about your last thought now.
wrong forum, wrong thread, but Bourne Ultimatum and Assassination of Jesse James gives my HD-A35 fits. Many other titles lose sync if I leave on pause for a while, but usually a skip back solves issue. But the two listed titles, and perhaps another Im forgetting, require constant skipping.
I prefer bluray. :)

I'm using a fairly new Denon DVD-3800BDCI unit, this is the first BD title I've had any problem with. I've watched quite an array of BD and SD-DVD titles.
But maybe there's something about certain discs (There Will Be Blood, for example), that cause the PS3 defect to manifest itself?yeah, I'm thinking, at least in my situation, that it's a manufacturing issue, or something "contaminated" the disc. Although, I've seen, on the player threads, where manufacturers have released firmware updates that address specific disc issues to allow particular movies to function properly.
But I plan to exchange this disc for another copy and see what happens (especially when I paid $35.00 for it).
So were you able to play other BD titles successfully after you experienced the failure with "There Will Be Blood"?
emailists 07-18-08, 12:47 AM That is the only title that has locked up on my Samsung 1500.
Dave Mack 07-18-08, 01:11 AM There will be Lockups....
:(
WestCoastD,
I tried watching 3 movies after my two copies of TWBB locked up. I watched No Reservations, which skipped ahead several chapters so I missed about 20 minutes of the movie, and I also tried watching Mr. Woodcock, which locked up solid. There was another movie in there that also locked up, but I cannot remember what it was at this point.
I should be getting my PS3 back today so I will report back here when I do.
There will be Lockups....
:(
Hehe...
Okay, seriously.
I played TWBB last night on my PS3 (1st week launch, 60GB)...no issues.
This movie is seriously f*cked up though!
Okay guys. For those of you who were interested in hearing how this situation was resolved, I got my PS3 back from the Soney Lerado Texas repair facility last night and watched "There Will Be Blood" with no problems.
So the problem was my PS3, not the disc. As for whether or not there's something about this particular disc that effected the PS3, I really don't know. Maybe.
As for the movie, all I can say is, "Wow." I think mainstream audiences will hate this movie, as it certainly is perplexing. But I was mesmerized by every moment of this thing until the very end. And even the end was interesting.
Daniel Day Lewis was freakin' amazing, I'll give it that.
