View Full Version : How do I adjust screen and drive?

What test patterns are used to set screen and drive? How do I then do it? For some reason it says "for service technician only." Does that mean I can blow them up or something?

What projector?

My ECP CadCam. It has three "screen voltage" controls. They're these turn knobs on the back of the projector.

Screen Red
Screen Blue
Screen Green

Is there a test pattern I can use to know how much is enough and what is too little, like how I can adjust brightness and contrast with an external test pattern?

My projector allows me to turn each tube on or off, so if that helps set screen?

Interesting screen name "ECP2Kstack" it has my curiosity peaked.

I have two ECP CAD/CAM projectors. I thought they were ECP 2000s, but I lucked out and they're the higher end CAD/CAM. Once I figure out how to setup one perfectly, I'm thinking about stacking them. Because there's only one lens, it should be possible, with a near perfect mechanical setup, to stack them. Unlike three lens projectors, these have a control which allows each tube's raster to be rotated +/- 180 degrees.

I was able to find a copy of the manual. It was inside the case when I opened it up to clean off the mirrors, prisms and inside portion of the lens.

Cool I have seen only one pic of this Projector.

First decide what aspect ratio you want to use, then if there is a way to maximize the greens raster with that aspect ratio using an external full field pattern of that aspect ratio, center that full field pattern to the edges of the green tube first about 4-8 mm away from the edges.
then.
Now you pic your screen size and since you dont have the PJ mounted I assume you move the projector with the centerd green full field to fit in the screen size and aspect you picked. once you have this set adjust the red and blue to the green and you have it set.

Now I have no idea how the menu set up for this PJ is but my above suggestion is just that a suggestion.

Pics of this Projector and its internal components of the miroros and the like would be neat to see.

There's no menu. All adjustments are done with knobs on the back of the projector and on the driver box. You hit the Test button and while pressed it hums to let you know it's in test mode. You see a grid and it has letters in the corners to set edge and corner focus.

There's knobs on the back which control pulleys that move the lens in three ways for: center, edge and corner focus.

It's actually much simpler to setup than a three lens that has a menu system. I was able to set it up except I don't know how to calibrate screen and the driver gains.

Does the manual give you any guidance for setting the color balance? Starting points for the brightness and contrast controls? The screen control is an offset adjustment that sets the CRT to match the video amplifier output. The screen adjustment effects all levels of the video. 0%, 10%....90%, and max. As the screen adjustment is increased all the video levels will increase. The drive adjustments are for the highest video levels only. They will have maximum effect on 100% levels decreasing to no effect on the 0% level.

Do you have a video source that can output a gray stairstep pattern? If nothing else you can draw a pattern with paint on your PC.

The contrast and brightness are only knobs you turn, they only have a min and max with no way of knowing the exact value. The manual is only a piece of plastic that was taped to the inside. It has ten steps you should follow.

Turn on
Push test
Adjust center optical focus
Adjust size
Adjust rotation
Adjust side optical focus
Adjust corner optical focus
Adjust electronic focus
Adjust contrast and brightness
Turn off test

That's it.

You mean a Ramp pattern?

This pattern has a circle in the center that is 5% above black. With everything adjusted right it should just barely be visible. The brighter borders should be white. With brightness and contrast at normal settings, screen and drive set correctly, and tubes without too much wear that is what you should have.

Where can I get a 1920x1080 version of that? So I can calibrate 1080i. A CAD/CAM only allows you to calibrate for one signal type. I tested it, the raster, brightness, etc all change with different resolutions sent.

I made that pattern with the microsoft paint program. It's a PITA but you can draw any test pattern that you want with it.
