Come see me at the Jones theater at CEDIA.

I apologize for the tease but more will follow with the official press release.Any chance they will show something like dark scenes from Dark City, which comes out on Blu-ray around the end of July?

I see that your link to www.wolfcinema.com says, "Our reference film and video projectors will be coming to market in June 2008." Will you be able to say anything about those soon?

One of the things overclkr (Cliff) wants and has seen how it improves the images is high on/off CR. Unfortunately, some people high up in ISF seem to not understand the subject matter very well and have been confused about some things related to it. Some of the stuff coming from ISF people (either in print, what I've been told directly, or what I've heard from people taking the classes) have made me think they have somehow concluded that ANSI CR and simultaneous CR are the same thing or that mixed images must be about ANSI CR more than on/off CR, which is a fallacy that might come from confusion caused by ANSI CR being a test with a mixed image. For instance, at last year's CEDIA an associate of Kevin Miller's told me and a group that on/off CR doesn't matter and ANSI CR is all that matters. I tried to point him (and thus Kevin) to my article about CR here:

http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_13_2/feature-article-contrast-ratio-5-2006-part-1.html

but didn't have a direct link to give him while I was at the show. Then later a review came out from Kevin Miller for the RS1 which said:

http://www.avrev.com/home-theater-front-projectors/hd-ila-projectors/jvc-dla-rs1-hd-ila-lcos-video-projector-2.html

In recent years, manufacturers have added contrast ratio to the numbers war they wage against one another. The RS1 is rated at a difficult-to-believe 15000:1. You may be interested to know that the human eye can’t see more than about 1200:1, and so if you get a real-world contrast ratio of 500 or 600:1, that is simply amazing, even for the most expensive high light output video projectors. By way of comparison, a well-designed movie theater yields not much more than 200:1.He was obviously confused about the capabilities of our eyes and/or how they relate to these situations (and how on/off CR is not the same as ANSI CR is not the same as simultaneous CR). For example, the NASA data here:

http://msis.jsc.nasa.gov/sections/section04.htm#_4.2_VISION

Example Scale of Luminance (millilamberts) Effect
Sun's Surface at noon 10^9 Damaging
10^8
10^7 Phototopic
Tungsten Filament 10^6
10^5
White paper in sunlight 10^4
10^3
10^2
Comfortable reading 10
1 Mixed
10^-1 Scotopic
White paper in moonlight 10^-2
10^-3
White paper in starlight 10^-4
10^-5
Absolute threshold 10^-6

Reference: 337, p. 26; NASA-STD-3000 194shows much of the reason a large overall range to handle lots of different images (high on/off CR) is relevant.

And this link:

http://home1.gte.net/res18h39/intrascene.htm

gives some good data about scenes (like the Gladiator example) that some would mistakenly think have nothing to do with on/off CR because they are mixed, but in actuality can have quite a bit to do with on/off CR (with APLs much lower than the ANSI CR pattern).

Given Cliff's desires and that he knows what very high on/off CR brings him in his theater with real material, do the people behind this thing that is going to be shown in the Jones theater understand the relevance of on/off CR, as well as the relevance of ANSI CR?

I will set aside some AVS members demo time so you can bring the software you would like to see. When we get closer I will post an invitation so you know when to come if you want to.

I am an old CRT guy. I know what he is looking for, others don't like that look they want powerful whites. I can make it look like that or make it look like a 14 foot wide plasma. I will have a couple of machines so I will do both.

I am an old CRT guy.Good, then you should have first hand knowledge of how high on/off CR with low ANSI CR can do much better for black level performance than lower on/off CE with higher ANSI CR (although both matter), and why Cliff values that high on/off CR. I'm not sure if you've seen the circuit he uses to help the tradeoff between shadow detail and on/off CR, but I've heard it works really well.

I hope that I get some time to get to the Jones theater (I'm only going to be at CEDIA for a short time) and I hope it goes well for you. I know these things can get pretty hectic.

Great above post Darin. I was chatting with Alan and talking about my sweet spot for when I upgrade and would love to have a projector that will be able to accomplish around 15 to 18 foot lamberts and at least 80k to one contrast at 10ft wide (16:9).

I'm hoping that things are getting close enough now that it will be a reality in the near future.

BTW, I'll be joining you soon with the "black hole". I'm going to accoustically fabric my entire walls in my theater in black soon. :^)

Does Wolf Cinema combine existing technology in a novel way or are you launching novel technology?
Will the press release come soon or just prior to CEDIA?

What time is the AVS forum cocktail hour? Does any one know where it is at this year? We can try and open up the Wolf demo theater before the AVS function.
