I have been searching for a new PS3 80GB unit for 3 weeks now and they are all sold out everywhere! I will not pay the ridiculous prices being asked on ebay and a extended warranty is also needed. My 60GB optical block crapped out on me but with ext warranty through BB I can send it back for a giftcard to be used for a new one. Problem is....they only have the 40GB and my son has an extensive PS2 game collection which the 40 will not play. Can anyone help with locating this ellusive unit? Has Sony discontinued this one too? If so what is the plan for replacement or have they junked the PS game console production entirely?

You should have already taken care of the exchange through BB. It might take a couple of weeks to get the store credit, and in that time, you might miss your chance when they get more in.

Shipping it out today but have not seen it available in stock through them at all.

Yeah I had it all planned out to sell my 40gb and upgrade to the 80 but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Couldn't take the wait for MGS4 anymore so I caved in on Friday and bought it. Awesome game, loving every second of it.

I've given up on this bundle and am now awaiting a holiday time Little Big Planet bundle (I know one's coming).

Next time I'll preorder or wait in line at midnight.

I found mine last Thursday at a Walmart that was 20 miles outside my 'normally' populated area. Also, most stores are getting another shipment this week or next.

The word I heard is that the new 80GB model doesn't contain the PS2 compatibility chip that the previous 80GB model did. I heard this from a sales droid at Fry's Electronics in Renton, WA.

I went in to the local Game Stop(I know...I know...) and talked to the manager who knows me by name by now and was discussing the 80GB MGS4 bundle. He said it does have the PS2 compatibility but they weren't sure when they'd get some in.

I did some thinking and figure it won't be too much of a pain to just leave the slim PS2 sitting in the entertainment stand. Seeing as GS is doing a 40GB + MGS4 + DS3(in addition to the six-axis in the box) for $485 and I plan on putting a bigger hard drive in there ASAP it was a pretty much no brainer decision.

Moral of the story, check the local game specific places...they can tell you if/when they'll get some in if you're nice :)

Nope. It plays PS2 games. I was playing Shadow of the Colossus on it last night.

Okay, that's good to know. Sorry for confusing things. Thanks for the clarification.

Actually, the droid was right but, like most droids, he was a little foggy, too.

The 80GB PS3 does not have the PS2 compatibility chip that was present in the 60GB PS3. However, it is largely PS2 compatible because it emulates the PS2 in software. "Largely" because it won't play 100 percent of the PS2 games.
The 40GB PS3 has neither the chip or the software emulator, so it won't play PS2 games at all.

60gb units have both chips for PS2 gameplay, while the 80gb has only one and software does the rest. The droid said it didn't have the same compatibility chip as the old 80gb, nothing about the full compatibility of the 60gb. So he was not right, because the old and new 80gb's are the same.

Where did you hear this? Last I heard (from Sony) was that they were surprised the MGS4 bundle sold out so quickly and were scrambling to make more, which I took to mean that it would be a little while before they hit the stores.

Hmm at least one of the BB employees who posts regularly on the Blu-ray forums was stating that the BBs are expecting to get another shipment very soon.

BTW where did you get your Sony info? I've only seen a lot of speculation regarding what Sony was expecting in terms of bundle sales. I haven't been actively looking for that information though.

Excellent. Hopefully, Sony is making a bunch. They've got a real winner on their hands here.

The 20th was listed as the restocking date on Best Buy's website the other day (note this was after the 20th, which is why I remember it). Gone now, though. Kind of interesting- I wonder if they're holding out for a few weeks to build up stock for another big push.

I don't think they're making any- I think they're clearing out a stockpile of old 80gb units and throwing them in a new box with MGS4. They're using the older, larger-sized chips, which I doubt are in production anymore.

I finally got mine. Targets all over my city (roughly 1mil) had them in stock. Not a single bestbuy/walmart had them.

Found mine at Blockbuster when no one else had them. I just called around and it was in the back!

I just bought one yesterday at a Gamestop in the mall.
The Gamestop on the top floor had 5, the EB Games (same company) on the lower level had 2, and the Best Buy down the street had it.

The clerk did say it was becoming very scarce and these may be the last shipments for a while... but its out there atm still.
