I've read all the great reviews on MGS4; however, have not seen anything regarding the online multiplayer. Has anyone played online and what's it like?

I played the beta. It took a bit to wrap my head around it (controls were very VERY poorly explained in the online manual), and everyone was trying to play it like CoD4. So, I did not have a great time.

I haven't played CoD4 in a while though, and expect this game to have a pretty dedicated following of people who appreciate its charms. I'm gonna give it another try soon, after getting used to MGS4 controls at least.

Not anywhere as pick-up and play as cod4 but a lot more depth. I like cod4 better, but MGO is growing on me. I should also say this is my first foray into the metal gear world. My trouble is i want to play it like cod4...Any advice for a better gaming experience with this game???? Thanks.

I loved the MGO in Subsistence, I get the internet this week (pretty much purely for MGO and Battlefield) and am looking forward to playing again.

Here's my one gripe with MGO....I don't understand what in the heck is going on. There are all of these icons, symbols, etc., and I have no clue what they mean and it's not explained anywhere. Also, I can't figure out the CQC thing online. Maybe I'm just stupid, but what it seems I have to do is sneak up behind someone, bring out the knife, throw them to the ground, and shoot them. I can't slit their necks at all like you can do in the game.

Yes. You can do it through the game IIRC. It's pretty ridiculous. You need your PSN ID, a Konami ID, AND an MGO ID.

I think you need Game ID and character ID once you are past Konami ID.

i would like to know why my characters name has a sloth beside it (at least it looks like a sloth) when i play online.

I am also annoyed that it is only one character per PS3 without paying extra.
I am also annoyed with the hoops you have to jump through to get online in the first place. (seriously, if a password can only be numbers, tell me that upfront!!!)

you do learn to play as you go along, the online manual is useless.

and the fact some people seem to appear and attack you from impossible angles just annoys the crap out of me.

FYI -- While playing MGO -- I am Kidlet, cause apparently you cannot have the same PSN ID as MGO ID. so my boy (who is kidlet on psn) is Wrassle in MGO and vice versa... wtf?!?!

i believe you need to have lvl 3 knife skill in order to release the goo from their neck, taken from here http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=942282&topic=43815077. anyone found a good source of info for mgo? like what you get at each skill lvl?

i would be willing to bet that konami made a sweetheart deal with sony in order for them to get all the micro-transaction money for mgo provided they kept it a ps3 exclusive. the complexity they added for online play stinks of this! im not a conspiracy theorist, they just tell me i am.

Sloth means you get headshotted (is that word?) a lot. Implying you move slow like a sloth. The rat means you fall for traps often. I do wish somewhere they had an easy list of these. Not that I'll earn anything but sloth.

The one thing MGO really needs is better automatching options. I want to be able to pick my game type and not end up having to sit through two game types I hate just play 5 minutes of Rescue. Why does TDM have to be in every single server I'm on? DM shows up way to often as well. Both game types I find pointless in MGO.

Out of curiosity...where in the heck did you find this stuff? There are a ton of other emblems that I've seen like a skull, a bee, etc. I have no clue what they all actually mean.

Its on the last or second to last page of your personal stats. There's also a way to look at other players stats that I stumbled into one day but I don't remember exactly how I got there.

I really like it. Its a nice change of pace once you get over the overly complex registration process.

When you have a good connection, its super smooth, but unfortunately thats not as frequent as I would hope.

The game modes are fun but I wish more people would be playing.

To reiterate, a fun, nice change of pace that has potential to become much more if more people "get it".

personally i think the registration process turns off a lot of players..

It is overly complicated and confusing especially with it's very blatant "you gotta agree to pay for certain things before you play the game" message.. (even though you don't have to pay to play)

They are pretty fun, I just have a few small complaints. The first one is that it isn't very newb friendly. Now, I've played a ton of COD, and I'm not actually too bad, but MGO is a tough game to play. I'd reckon it's more realistic because as you shoot, the bullets go everywhere but their intended target. I unload a clip into a guy, and he doesn't die. I guess it's because most bullets don't hit the target. I guess I need to work on more burst fire and headshots. Also, I imagine the leveling up of the assault rifle will make the shot grouping tighter. It's just not very friendly when you run around and keep getting tagged. Also, I wish that one of two things would happen, either give out about 500-1000 more drebin points per kill, OR, in rounds without drebin points, allow people to pick all of the guns. I mean, the M4 is ok, but I'd really like the xm8 or mk17. Heck, let me add the red-dot to the M4 in non-drebin rounds. I almost prefer drebin rounds just so I can aim a little easier.

I'm one of these players. I was eager to play the online part, but I'm hesitant about completing the registration process. I don't understand why you have to get so many IDs just to be able to play.

It plays just like the single-player. The only thing that I don't like is that in the single-player (and every other MGS game), you can press R2 to quickly equip or unequip the last weapon you had. It made going from a gun to CQC oe melee a lot easier and more fluid. On MGO, pressing R2 makes you cycle throughout your entire loadout with every button press. Makes it hard to get your CQC on. Is there a setting I missed or a good workaround without just equipping a single weapon so that the button presses cycle between nothing and the weapon?

There should be a way to change this in the options. You can actually change SP to MGO's way also, or vice versa

Yes, in the main options screen where you can set your invert axis, etc., press r1 and it'll go over to a screen that will let you determine how you want to handle your inventory of weapons and items.

Which I thought was absolutely ridiculous. I don't care if my guy can't be changed physically, but changing colors, changing armor, etc., would've been nice, especially when you create the character you have no idea what the environments look like, etc.

Hey guys, if you're feeling lost in MGO because of the steep learning curve (and believe me, I was just there a couple days ago...). Feel free to add me as a friend (character name: ExMachina). One of my "clan"'s missions is to help newcomers get a handle on the game's controls and modes.

You can view explanations of your animal ranks in your Personal Stats. People have been compiling lists of them on GameFAQs and various PS3 gaming sites... Though I've gotten the Sloth title myself, it doesn't show up next to my name for some reason.

Sloth = dies a lot to headshots
Rat = falls for lots of traps
Eagle = lots of kills via headshot
Crocodile = lots of kills (not headshots or knife)
Jaws = lots of kills with the knife
Frog = plays capture mission often
Dove = tends not to kill one's opponents
Tortoise = uses the cardboard box a lot
Night Owl = uses ENVG a lot
Snake = plays Sneaking Mission often
Flying Squirrel = rolls around often
Bee = uses the s-plug to get SOP data often

There are still more titles being discovered... Like there are the Fox/Foxhound emblems which people get if they're within the top 100 or something players in a certain stat. There's also a rumored Bear rank which is tied to CQC, though I've never seen it.

I have a lot of gripes with MGO, to be honest... mainly stemming from the gunplay and weapon balance. Oftentimes firefights will end with you and your opponent killing each other with "simultaneous" headshots... which is unheard of in other games but a common occurrence in MGO, probably due to something weird in Kojima Production's netcode. That said, CQC / knives are unique to the series and make for some interesting close combat. Also, while most of the modes are typical online shooter fare (CTF, capturing territory, etc.), Sneaking Mission is really cool. Oh, and the SOP system is a clever and useful carry-over from MGS4 itself... when people actually use it.

And nothing beats rolling into what looks like a typical fragfest in a drum can. :P

Question about the SOP system. When I start a match, I salute my buddies to get tied in. Then, as I run around, I see my guys in orange. Also, I'll sometimes see lines showing where they are aiming, but that's all I ever see. Shouldn't the other team show up on my screen when they are spotted by my team? How does SOP work?

I've only played a few hours of MGO so far but one thing I really hate about it is the view speed, especially in over-the-shoulder aiming. I've set the speed to 10 (max) in the options but it still feels slow.

Apart from that, I really like hunting down Snake, but hate playing him.

You'll only see the enemy's positions if the teammates you're linked to have an SOP skill equipped, such as Narc or Monomania (Narc shows the position of someone who's fired on you, Monomania shows the outline of someone whom you've hit).

The SOP skills are some of my favorite, to be honest. They always take 1 slot even when leveled up... and Monomania, for example, an easy way to see when someone's going to pop their head from behind a corner or try to flank you. :P

Another thing that I don't like is that, at least at the levels I play at (beginner), people don't know what they are supposed to do. With octocamo, etc., it should be rather easy to sneak up behind someone, tase them, and take their tags. I don't see what's so hard about it, except people just run around like they are a normal player.

I stopped using automaching. I began picking servers form the.. [I can't remeber] list, where you can chose the server to play on. I have played on 'friendly' CQC servers where it's only CQC, and people were pairing off, choking each other out, and waking each other up. Much like a big wrestling match. It's a great way to figure out the CQC aspects. There are allot of 'practice' servers that focus on CQC, knife, and other specific weapons.

I got allot of tips, and practice on them. Fast increase of levels too. Great way to level up skill, and figure out the game.

zetram: Well, I use a USB headset for convenience, so I don't have specific experience with your BT mic... A couple of questions though: is the game itself just not registering the device at all (you should have speaker + mic icons to the right of your character name in game lobbies, for example)? Or is it just not picking up your voice?

FYI, you have to hold down select in the lobby (mic icon should light up) or in a game to turn voice chat on...

^ Holding select turns the mic on; you should see "Voice Chat On" in the left side of your screen in-game. Then when you talk (albeit fairly loudly...), it should automatically pick it up and your name should pop up above that, which indicates that your voice is being transmitted.

Match time is set by the host, choose a better host.

The SOP system is brilliant, and great if you know what your doing and how to use it.

It's no COD4, but it never was supposed to be. A very good player might be able to run and gun alone, but it's set up to reward team play and tactical gameplay. 4 guys working together as a unit will clean house in this game. Reminds me of old school RB6, before it dumbed itself down for the masses of Quake ADD'ers.
